6 above this a.m. clint I'll take a peak at the town pool to see how the hard water is setting up for you :) Colder days and nights still to come. 0 is in the near forecast so I'm sure we're gonna dip below zero again. With my chimney swept out the house is getting much warmer. It was long overdue.

My stove is pretty efficient, and my wood is dry. I used to clean the chimney in the spring and around mid Feb. Never get anything out. Now it is just in the spring. Take the inside pipe out and clean it and take a peek up next weekend as I do every other month or so. It was around 9 here this am. I am probably staying in the weekend, just do not feel like being cold and dragging through all the snow on the ice

I've been waiting for a cold enough winter to keep the Genny from blowing out for years, and now that we have one it is so cold, you have to thaw the guides every other swing! And I've been sick half the winter. Looks like a little thaw next weekend, but I just checked outside and it is a balmy 12 now, a little too cold for the swatter. I was down at the lake the other day and the ice sheet went all the way to the horizon, first time I've seen that since 1982. L13

Yes this is the most brutal winter in many years.Locally we have about 8" of snow cover and a very hard ice cover on it.My property is rural and surrounded by woods and fields so I have deer traveling by all the time until we got this ice covered snow, they are probably having a very difficult time moving around looking for food as I see very few tracks,if this continues they will be in trouble. The forecast is for below freezing until Thurs.,not good.

Clint, apparently the previous owner never cleaned the chimney... clean as a whistle now and she pulls hard. I agree with you about this weekend. I have an opportunity to get out on schmo bay for monster walleyes and plentiful large perch but I just don't feel like doing anything, especially after nearly having pneumonia this past week.
Lucky, I remember in the past being told I was wrong about colder water temps making your guides freeze more... it is true though. Of course air temps play a big part but just a few degrees difference in water temp makes them freeze much quicker.
I've been itching to get down to Selkirk since my last visit 3/4 weeks ago. Ice banks were 12-15 foot high then... can't imagine what they look like now. I hope the next few winters are similar. It will make for a great steelhead return in years to come... BIG FISH!!!

It was a beautiful day on the ice . Sun was shining, wind was quiet and we even caught a few slimmers . Tired as heck though from lack of sleep and trudging through snow. All and all, great day to be outside :) I'm almost ready to break away from the ice for a week and visit some moving water

2 above this morning with a fluffy 2-3 inches on top of the thick snow pack...not a cloud in the sky... its rather breath taking Clint heard of a 14 pound taken out of shmoe recently. Don't know how true it is Edit: took a little ride around and hit a few pockets of -2 and -3 Edit#2: still no temps near freezing mark for at least a week... some zero lows and very low high temps in the forecast

Very interesting graph on ice cover. Looks like last high ice readings were 94 and 96. I remember New jersey had record breaking snowfalls and low temps both those years and I remember fishing in frigid temps on the SR those years... before that mid 70's was the next 90% ice coverage... now 2014... could it be an approximate 20 year climate pattern? Or maybe just a coincidence??? Interested to hear what the scientists have to say

I will hijack the weather thread for a bit Here is the story on the EYE http://www.abay.com/alexandriabaynynews2979.htmI caught a a 33 to 34 incher late May at Henderson about 10 years or so. Was nowhere near that fat, it was spawned out when I caught it. No tape so just cut a piece of string and measured at home. Back 20 years ago we used to catch 1 or 2 eyes in the 30's in Quebec, biggest one I saw was close to 40 up there in August. Have not caught one in the 30's up there for at least 15 years. Thanks for the offer DB, but I think it is all good. What a run of bad luck I had yesterday. Decided to flush and clean my hot water tank yesterday. After finishing the kitchen faucet was running at about 1/2 speed. It is a pull out with a switch from stream to spray. Removed the faucet, took the cartridge out and clean everything else I could and no dice. Spray was OK, but stream was 1/2 speed. I think the switch is messed up/plugged The wand is not serviceable. Frigging thing is 6 months old so we are going to try and take it back to Lowes if not maybe try warranty, but they will say it is from crap in the water so after shipping there and back........may as well possibly by a new one. Went to my nieces birthday party gone for an hour. Got home, I went downstairs to get an old faucet I rebuilt after I got this new one, to swap them out and water dripping from a joists. Did not remember dumping/spilling that much water under the cabinet. Waited 20 minutes and still some water dripping so I shut off the water and and it stopped leaking after a bit, so I figured it was a leak in the wall. Turned the water back on an hour later and no leak so thank goodness. l think I may have left the valve on a small bit under the sink when we went to the party or I spilled way more than I thought. I left the water on all night and no leaks. Put the old faucet on this AM and it seems to work well and my rebuild worked as it does not drip anymore. Well $100 down the drain for the new faucet , but much better than ripping into a wall. Back to the weather. Like DB said it snowed a bit last night. I got up at 6 and did not check the temp, but it was around 10 at 7am and 20 now. Sun even came out for a bit. Just do not feel up to dragging the sled over snow and getting cold this afternoon so I will take a nap watch TV all day.

Clint I feel you're pain... had a minor gel up in my fuel lines of the dozer... in turn the battery died... got her cleaned out and started but in turn killed my battery in my truck from charging her back up. Had to buy a ratchet extension to reach the locking bolt for the battery housing... will be replaced soon... all in a days (2 days) work though ;)
Clint, don't buy any faucet or shower valve from lowes or home depot. They have gotten better but the quality of their stuff is well below ones you'd buy at the supply houses and show rooms. And it is common to get one that was a return and repackaged.I've installed too many of them in my time and have had nothing but problem 50- 75% of the time. People often gripe about being recharged to swap it out... I tell them let me supply it next time and you will get a guarantee with the product....

Slowly learning that Andy. If you want quality you have to pay for it and take the time to go to the mom and pop stores (sometimes). We did our research and thought we were getting a decent mid level faucet. We will see what they do about it , told my wife to take it back and see what they will do. I totally disassembled the thing as far as I could and even soaked in vinegar all night.

Wow!!! What a slob of a walleye.. I enjoyed walleye fishing oneida this past season. Had a few good meals but I may start looking towards heading north in years to come. I know numbers aren't as plentiful but an average of 4-9 pounds is quite impressive.

That brings back memories of an guy we met up to Quebec back in the early 90's. We got to know him and would call him when we were going up so he could come up with us. He made the trip up alone, he was from a small town near Montreal. He was from Italy and a teen during WW 2 . Johnny Perota was his name. Man the stories he told up. He said his mom hid him under the floor as a teenager so he would not have to fight and he saw Mussolini strung up. Anyway I was cleaning up a walleye and he came up and tapped me on the shoulder. He called me what sounded like kid with his accent and said in a thick Italian accent, "Kid you waste much, very much, you are wasting the best parts ." Proceeded to show me how to cut the cheeks out for poor mans "scallops" AND cut the throats of the fish out. We cooked up the "cheeks and throats " and man did the throats stink when they fried up. The cheeks were very good and the throats were OK, but he gobbled the throats up like they were Lobster. We had called his wife one year near 2k and found he had passed. We were up there about 6 or 7 times with him at least what a guy.

When I lived in Binghamton and we caught 'eyes in the Susquehanna, everyone had a separate bag in the freezer for the cheeks. Throats, I never heard of, but the cheeks have the same texture as scallops, and I think it was the guys up on Endicott's North Hill, which was Italian on the west side, and Ukranian on the East side where I learned to save them. Felt warm enough to hike into the river, until I looked at the temperature and it was only low double digits. Maybe next weekend! L13

My brother in law has been fishing an impoundment ( res ) that the Susquehanna flows through for 3 days now near our deer camp in oneonta . It holds eyes, good ones too but so far in 3 days a big fat zero .. They can be tough to catch at times that's for sure.

So it didn't snow and it wasn't cold today!!!
...only about 6 inches of light lake snow since last night and a balmy 20 :).... maybe another 8" by wednesday

It was tough down there last week. Mono rod fishing with the shelves extending 4-5 feet over the waters edge. Moving from spot to spot was treturous so I only fished 2 spots. Nobody dared the other side. Group of 4 coming up from the trench as I walked in. One guy fishing the head of the red rock. Jack's dancing should take effect soon as its back to work for me.

If the river is that gnarly, now that I have both batteries for the 18 volt drill powered up, I may have to give the hardwater a try. I used the adapter two years ago and it got me through 8" no problem with new blades. And at my age I'll only be needing 6 holes! Now to see if I can find the box with the Swedish pimples! Extra day off next week, thanks George and Abe! L13

Been meaning to have an excuse for a new quality drill and give one of those a try. Heard the secret is keeping the batteries warm and you can get at least 10 plus holes per battery. Weather I drove through a pretty heavy lake squall on the way home from Cicero to just past C Square. Dropped a quick 3 inches here in Parish before moving south. Looks like it may sit to the south as 4 to 8 Southern Oswego to the 'cuse tonight

If you are willing to toss with the spin pole you can stay back far enough as to not risk sliding in and move around a bit more than I was. I also didn't feel like dragging corkers back up so went in lug soles which made it worse than it might. I will say there were zero peeps on the west side and only the 1 fishing the east while I was there. Without a skagit head it is tough with no water at your feet to load the rod making what I wanted to do a chore instead of a pleasure. I bet bottom bouncing would be killer with fish that have seen little pressure over the last month.
