Hats off to Brookfield... 900 release with frigid temps in end of January... multiple days straight of sub zero temps for about 3 weeks.yet they're still playing catch up from the 3 brief thaws we've had. A friend was telling me how raging the black river was about a week ago even during the -37 actual temps watertown had... so yeah, there was a lot of water thats still coming off the hill... But, You'd almost think they hired a meteorologist and hydrologist based on their performance in the past few months. I guess them almost losing their shirt with last April's flood stage with no rain events leading to it knocked some sense in to them. Maybe I'm wrong though with the science end of it. Looking out the window every now and then can work just as well :)

Minus 1 right now. One more day before we get back into seasonable temps. Could be above freeing on Sat. Best (and only best) thing about the wind is that it pretty much blows all the snow off he ice. My smitty works really well too, I can actually suspend my jet sled below it and haul out more stuff.

What was the car reading clint? Even to the north in Watertown it didn't get below zero. Just to the south was above zero temps. Small little half halo of frigid air off the south eastern coast well below zero though. Truck barely started. 30 degrees is gonna feel like a heat wave. But long term is still showing below freezing temps for a few weeks. I've noticed in the past, valentines weekend was always the "true" late January thaw. Something tells me its gonna happen like that this year. I hope to free some time up and hit the water just above the ice line for some pink cheeked bucks down low... that would be a dream come true.

I imagine there is a lot of ice shelves on the river now.I remember seeing a picture way back of someone standing on shelf ice in the town pool ,I believe, and thought what if that shelf gives way.....could be a bad experience!

Jack, shelf ice has not been what you think it would be so far. The 3 seperate thaws we've had have left us with high water during our cold snaps...

Jack drove through town and yes theres some shelves stretching towards the center. Can't imagine what the river would look like if it was an average flow winter at 285... it would be frozen over up to 2a at this point...
Clint, guys at work were making comments about my thermometer being broken... it was no joke for sure based on your readings. Your just a hop skip and a jump from me :)

Just missed the big 30 mark today... 6 above felt like a spring morning... most folks seemed to be of jollier spirits today. Warmer temps but mostly still below freezing mark. 8 out of next 10 days are chances for snow. Luckily the wind yesterday and the day before blew 1/2 of the mess away besides the plow piles. I'd suppose the fishing should be good this weekend

So from 900 to 285??????? With the warmer weather and possible rain on Saturday????? I know it will be colder on the hill and we are not supposed to get much rain but why run at 900 for 2 days and then turn the tap right off.

I would love a camera at the dam. Has anybody seen it lately? All I can guess is that it is not full (because they have been round the clock generating because of the extended cold) and they are taking a breath letting a bit drip back in as the heaters won't be firing up for a couple of days. They may well now understand the possibility of a lawsuit if they keep letting it flood but its still all about the money when it comes to the bottom line.

I doubt we'll see any runoff... snow in Altmar is completely packed and solid... the hill must be packed even more so. That 900 was probably just a relief of excess water from the last thaw event. When the sub zero temps first hit the river was still at 1200 for quite a few days after. Even smaller streams had flow until just recently.

Well its quarter to five and still in the mid 30s but I was hoping for a bit more rain before the temps drop below freezing today slowing the water rise. Lots of ice to break up before fishing opens up in the elevator. Up enough to be flowing over the ice now melting it from top and bottom. I can not wait for monday to get here and maybe find a fish or two.

OK I wrote too soon. Wishful writing so to speak. I just looked at my trickle and althougfh it has gone from 65 cfs to 85 cfs it still is not running over the ice and melting has been sloooooow. Doubtful anything comes of this 2 day respite. And the big river is projected to go to an unfishable for me level today.

Ford Street is ~900, Oatka is ~100, Mt Morris is ~1300, Portageville is ~700. There is not a lot of new water in that system. Might be the best chance for the whole winter, depending on what is down there for shelf ice, and the skim coat on the rocks. This AM at 0800, everything was treacherous from the black ice. Was going to make the hike, but my leg still hurts from the fall fall when it is this slick. I would also hate to get down there, and then have the wetness freeze up again, and have to hope I could creep up the hill on my korkers. It would have been an adventure in my 30's, but would be less than entertaining over 60. It was hard enough to walk on level ground this AM! L13

I couldn't figure out where the water was supposed to come from Luckster but the graph shows a fairly steep climb today-tonight. Portageville doesn't indicate a big influx so where it is coming from has me stumped unless it has to do strictly with power generation or imagination. If the morning doesn't show a real time increase maybe I'll chance it with the sprayprole. Ice shelves may not let me land anything since I bent my net useless when we hit the reef on the St Larry last summer and I went ax over tea cups breaking my spinning rods.

Don't know about rachacha, but no run off of any sort around these parts. Snow definitely packed down pretty hard but I don't see anything rising in the near future. Especially with a two week bout of seasonable weather coming at us. They're saying something about potential for a major winter storm on wednesday

We're looking at highs just under freezing mon tues then a pair of highs at the freeze mark ending with some amount of snow late wed Trickle went to 105 or so before topping out. Late thaw it went over 600. Genny starts in PA so it picks up flow all that way

Jack, for once I'm feeling ya man. Between sweeping my chimney this past Saturday and coming down with the flu, I want nothing but to cuddle by the wood stove. And yes, thoughts of Bahamian flats and cruising bonefish are in my thoughts as well :)
Nothing running off to make a difference in anything except folks finally able to fish lower stretches. That will change soon with the Upcoming weather and lower water though. That is Until the fashionably late January thaw comes :)

CHICKEN SOUP Andy, lots of rest you'll be better in no time. Snow finally ended here about 4 PM so out I went to blow it off again.Went about 20 ft and the blower starts clogging and pushing the snow, first I thought the **** stuff was too wet and heavy but then I remember other times when that was no problem. So I start inspecting the thing and there it was,a broken shear pin.Luckily I had ONE on hand, got it in and two hrs later the drive is clear again.Had about 8 inches of heavy snow and now we have a winter storm watch for Wed!

Missed a soft pull on a blue purple prom dress and had an on off on a globug under an indie. Shelf wouldn't have let me land one any way but a bit of a fight would have been nice. The side of the road as I walked in. I forgot to take pics of the gorge wall and I wasn't walking back in to do it. My calfs are on fire anyways. Picture more of same only 50 feet high. Half of the falls was frozen
