Clint-gives meaning to the term "flash frozen."
Not as bad today but still cooooold.  Another wintery blast headed my way Sunday into Monday.  Hurry Spring.

Clint, I would suggest getting an electric water heater bud... cheaper than burning oil and an easier budget to handle on your monthly electric bill... I've got a propane jobber myself... when it shi!ts the bed I'm thinking of converting to electric. One less chore to have keep on and budget for... also on the morning of -27 a few days ago my regulator must've froze up as a had very little volume at my stove and water tank... no hot water on a -27 morning sucks for sure

That's good advice, Andy. I've swapped a number of them  for customers and have another  one scheduled for May. One less zone to fail, too. The other advantage is relatively easy replacement  of the heating elements. Easy to diagnose with a cheap elec. tester , and most hardware stores carry the elements.
I've been using Whirlpools with excellent luck over the past 8 years.

Yup, and most hardware stores even have the most common elements... I'm looking to do a wood burning hot water boiler in the near future with a hot water coil. In the winter I'll have an isolated feed from the wood burning domestic coil run to my water heater so my water tank fills with hot water from the coil instead of the cold water feed... I'd tie in to the cold feed on my water tank below a cold water isolation that would be closed in heating months... if I wanted to get real fancy I'd do it as a circulated return loop with a little taco 006 bronzed pump and I'd be guaranteed to not ever have the water heater kick on... anything to save my nickles and dimes from going in to the pockets of corporate America is ideal from me

PA- you did the dance, now you pay the piper.  Look at it this way, we are one day closer to Spring.  Days are getting a little longer and when Obama comes out of the White House and sees his shadow we'll have six more weeks of winter.

To quote myself  "alot less"  ,as far as the oil usage,  may have been a strong term.    I figure I use 1/4 tank a year to heat the DMH or roughly 5.5 gallons a month.   I did a little math a few years back  when oil was $4.50 a gallon and the boiler still was cheaper to run than an electric HWH. At that time  IIRC the cost of fuel would have to be around $ 4.80 a gallon for the break even.  I have an indirect unit and a cold start boiler. Efficient and super fast recovery.  With the 2 of us boiler runs at most 2x a day in the summer.   Cost per BTU, oil is cheaper.    A tankless coil on the other hand is super inefficient.    You always need to keep the boiler hot to get your water.  Electric is certainly easier to work on, but considering I need the boiler to work anyway the only thing that can really go bad with the DHW part  is the tank t stat  and the one valve.   I certainly would think about a propane HWH  if the coil in my tank went bad as they cost about $400, but the tank has a lifetime warranty.

Jack, it's the apartment addition .. My son bought a house and moved out so it's been vacant for about month and 1/2.. I been trying to heat my 2 family house plus, keep some sort of heat into the addition house (apartment).. All the water, plumbing supply is from the main house.. It can be isolated , as is now but I been to busy with other projects, such as enjoying the ice fishing.. My bad for the way I did the plumbing without enough insulation, it really is a small isolated area and will be fixed in the spring , when dogs, wife and I decide to take over the area.. Will be nice living in an open space 1 level for a change.. Right now it's a great storage area for my Ice fishing shanties and gear :),
Yup now that I'm home from the nightmare J.O.B. , (well gonna be fishing ) for 3 days straight , time to pop a few tops..
Cheers brothers ..

Went outside for a smoke  bout 8 last night and a Yote came up from out back to bout 40 yards-didn't  give a hoot bout me. Too darned cold to sit out in the garage .22 tonight but I don't like it when they start getting brazen.
He took off when I went inside and came back out with  the wife and we talked kinda normal about it...  NOOOOOOO -- was just showin it to her not feeding her to it. Such a thing would never cross my mind.
Was kinda bright out and it looked to be all healthy against the snow - not scrawny in any way.

Its lightening up at the moment right now but 81 from parish to Pulaski was brutal... something tells me they're under forecasting this snow band. Looks like 10 inches already and the thin snow band stretches across the whole lake with central oswego county as ground zero for its path. Be careful if anyone gonna be driving out there

Looks like it is sitting right on top of you bro.    We got about 6 inches or so here, but it's in not snowing now.    I am all cleaned up for the night, drive and paths done.   They did up the totals from  possible 12 inches to up to 18 inches by 7am tomorrow.

Measured an average of 16 while plowing out an hour ago... still snowing and the band is still stretching out past the middle of the lake. If it stays persistent it could be interesting come time Wednesday morning... good to see truckers and regular cars taking careful precaution in these treacherous conditions. No need for a highway shutdown despite the blinding squalls

It's sitting up there because we are still clear here.   Sorry man, you can keep it.  I do not want to get up at 5 to clean out.

Yep, slept in a bit and no need to plow.   Most of that was from yesterday only a few stray flakes last night

Schizam-- sometimes everything gets in the way.  A short fishing  year up in SR county while moving and now  the grandkids lost  their Feb vacation.
We always come up on their week off  - Wife and G kids  x country ski in Osceola while I fish.
Not now--too many snow days from School --to be made up for by loosing their Vacation.

Thats a bummer Trev but I know from what I remember back since elementary school, I was always sick the first week of deer season.. Mom used to write the note while I helped Dad drag, clean and cut the meat..

Seems like a weekly thing up here.
Plowing with a loader is tough, I always tend to dig in or leave too much,  plus the open cab thing SUCKS.   I have a nice 7 foot blower for the back of my tractor, but only use it as an emergency back up and weight for when I push back the banks

Re:Weather thread 2014/01/28 18:08:08 (permalink)
Plowing with a dozer when its a foot or more. Usually don't even plow with the smaller snows. With the ground frozen and the ice packed between the grips of the tracks its not too sloppy. The 6 way blade is the ticket but a subtle touch and lower idle is very important. Also the ground has to be frozen.

Bear, after the dust settled and the sun came out today I had about four inches above my knee... its definitely packing now. I'd say entire town of Richland through albion averaged 2-3 foot... far end of Albion in to Altmar maybe more but I haven't been through there yet

Its a balmy 1 degree above right now. Find it hard to believe its going to be a low of 3 tonight since we're already below it... clear skies and snow cover is gonna make for a cold one in the a.m.
