Not alot of rain today here just the warmer temps.  The wind really picked up.     HT not that I will be out anytime soon, but I think it's a cool idea to start an Ice thread.

We kept some snow  here, though it's patchy. Enough for a white Christmas.
Do you ever get landlocks, HT?  I bet they'd fight like the dickens  through the ice.
I didn't know if you could target them or not. Have a good hunt!

Altmar seems to have an average of 12" of hard snow pack. Pulaski is still completely snow covered. Tug must still have feet. Seems as if the warm air stayed right below town of Richland for the most part. Fresh coating of an inch to two in the region. Even though a lot of snow has melted there's still plenty.

Much as I love the river, I'd skip this morning!  That morning we went to the Upper, Clint,  was as cold as I like. Single digits, OK- below- no!.  6" of clear ice on my small ponds. I'm going to try some jigging this afternoon.

A beautiful Christmas morning it is clint! Finished setting up Christmas for the kids around 230 this am. Went outside just before bed and there wasn't a cloud in the sky with a fresh 4-6 inches... it was quite breath taking. There was frozen flakes dropping sporadically from the sky as it must if been below the dew point. This morning was bright sun with a snow covered winter wonderland. I am jealous of my kids as white Christmas's weren't always common for me as a child. With the wood stove cranking the sub zero weather is alright with me.

Clint, I drove out to west Monroe yesterday and past a few streams. I've noticed water tables are still high with creeks flowing strong and my sump pump in the basement is running a lot. So please, anyone venturing out on ice be safe.

Merry official Christmas everyone!

The coldest I fished the river was -5 with my buddy Jimmy.. He sat in the truck most of the day..lol Funny thing was it was the first and only time ever approached by DEC officer, 3 times to check our license.. Twice in LFZ, once in Ells.. Finally the 3rd time I just said REALLY !!
I ice fished Schroon Lake at -22 and -17. That day I got a few Landlocks and Lakers.. Downfall was once they were removed from the 33 deg water they were flash frozen..

Clint, If you go with a sonar don't go with a to cheap one or you'll be disappointed.. As said I have a Vex fl-18 tri-beam.. My bro-in -law had a cheaper hummingbird and now just got a Vex fl-20 tri-beam..
Buy a good one and you'll only buy one..

Thanks HT I have been doing my home work and have talked to a few guys. Spent alot of hours on the net reading reviews  Looking at the Marcum VX1 pro.    Comp to the Vex FL8.   My biggest issue is I have to shop where my credit card gift cards are good so somewhat limited.  Still not decided yet though.

I borrowed a vex fl-8 for a season from a co worker who upgraded to an 18 before I bought mine.
The 8 worked great for below 100 fow. It was tough in laker ( 80-160 fow) water. Hence his upgrade and my buy of the 18

I will be heading up to Pulaski Thursday for my float trip on Friday....Looks like it might be a chilly start to the day....My guide's boat comes with a small propane heater so I suspect I won't freeze half to death...

For me with 95% of my fishing in below 30 feet for pan fish and occasional Oneida waldo.    Price wise it is comp to the 8, but has zoom the few guys I talked to say feature wise  it is close to the 18.

Re:Weather thread 2013/12/25 18:37:31 (permalink)
Chartist, dress warm- those heaters only go so far!  I'll throw out a few tips to keep you and  your guide happy- you may know them- you may not. Be careful when you swing your leg over the side with cleats or studs- it's very easy to shred the seats or damage  a rod left out. You get reduced mobility with a bunch of layers on. Accidents happen.  Don't get too close to those heaters. Because of all the layers and the cold sometimes you don't feel them until there's a hole in your waders or you've melted part of your boot. It's really easy to forget either of those things in the cold.  The guide will probably tell you these things, but, sometimes in the rush to get fishing....  Excuse me if you know this already. I've ripped a seat by accident myself in a friend's boat,  and seen several  destroyed pairs of boots and waders from the heaters.
Hope you learn and catch  a lot and have a good trip.

Re:Weather thread 2013/12/25 19:10:19 (permalink)
Thanks Fichy....I think I will not strap on my cleats and just fish with the felt sole to avoid doing any damage.  I'll probably wear 4 layers on top and neoprene waders.  Melting my waders is a risk that I did think of and I can see this as a potential issue.

We are putting in at Altmar early Friday after meeting up at Fat Nancy's.  Not sure how far down we'll travel but it's a 7 hour float trip.  I am going to fish a heavy tippet/leader -  1X.

Bring the cleats just in case you need to wade, though. I generally use 3x for steel, and some say that's heavy. I hope you get some fresh fish to test it out.  Should be good....
