That Phil.-Detroit came was the most entertaining I've seen in awhile. How them guys cut and jump in the slop is incredible. They made moves like steelhead.  My wife had  to fly out with my 94 year old Mom at 3 am this morning, I was really glad the ice held off and let them get off the ground.  I have a sister in Phoenix that had an aneurysm burst in her brain and several following strokes. Not long for the world. It's not that warm in Phoenix, I was hoping Nancy would at least see some sun and warm weather. Just got new studded tires for the car, so good mpg to the river next trip. Keep us up on the snow, Clint. Always appreciated.

Well the warm temps this afternoon(35) melted the ice by 1 PM so I did n't need to do a thing
Yea Charlie that snow at the Eagles game was something.Used to be a big fan of the birds then they hired that scumbag Vick,I only caught a couple minutes of that game had better things to do.At least Foles is playing now but I'm having a hard time forgetting that they took on Vick.

Charlie x2 on prayers.   Working in that field I see the effects of strokes and aneurysms on a daily basis.
Andy time will tell on the snow, but they can keep the bulk of it on the hill.
I am thinking ice here by  next weekend the 21st if the cold stays put.  Gonna get my gear out Thursday.   Gander Mountain is having an  Ice expo this weekend.
This is on sale for $119

Clint, about 5 inches in 2 hrs as a kick off... I notice they are emphasizing parish as the southern boundary of heavy squalls. You may get it good. Be safe in your travels.

Still not a flake in the sky as of 945 here since earlier this afternoon.  Looks like  it is sitting on Pulaski though.  Could be a day to sit home  and veg.  My gear is ready we will see in the AM how I feel and how the weather is doing.   This time last year was just sweatshirt weather.

Well we got and inch or so last night nothing big.   I decided to stay home and lucky I did.  I noticed a small leak in my boiler, so I need to stay home and monitor it and then possibly get a replacement part to fix.   Luckily it looks to be an easy fix (knock on wood), just being the back flow preventor  leaking.

Clint... looked like 10 inches by me this morning...

Back flow preventer??? Let me guess a watts 9d?

If its dripping from the blow off try tapping on it... if it doesn't stop and you have positive shutoffs on each side undo the unions and take the body out... try rinsing water through the body of the check valve... beats buying the new part especially since the lead free ban has been fully adopted. Prices on brass are through the roof. Give me a ring if you need a hand or have a question

Re: Weather thread 2013/12/11 10:39:13 (permalink)
Yep 9d. I turn off the supply water every  2 or 3 months and leave it off for a few days to check for leaks I can't see .  Noticed it was leaking this morning.    I turned the water back on and tapped on it and it seems to have slowed or stopped.   Worse case I will plug the vent and turn the water off so can have heat if it starts to spew.  Don't have  shut offs on both sides but if I shut off the manifold zone valves and the main feed at the boiler  I will not lose much.  Change out seems to be  easy as it has unions.  I have antifreeze in it so if I leave the water feed on I do need that preventor  working.   Been thinking of flushing and going with plain water as I heard it heats better,  but if it ain't broke...........
Sun is shining and only a few inches right now.   Windy though making the feel like that much worse.   Looks like keeping an eye on this and stoking up the fire all day is not a bad idea.

Water does heat faster than antifreeze. if you have supplemental systems though be sure there's no areas near your sill plate or anywhere else that will catch a draft and freeze when supplemental heat sources override your thermostat.

No problem with just keeping that ball valve off and plugging your vent. I'd bet a watts 9d is upwards near 60-70 bucks since the lead ban... flexxing the spring check back and forth while rinse the check valve body may do you as well though. Good luck. Its sounds like you have a handle on it either way.

I thinks that why they went with antifreeze. I have a a runs of pipe on outside walls upstairs and I really do not use that zone much if ever and even though it's insulated well you never know.  If I go to the trouble  of pulling it off I willjust change it out  as I want to add as little water as possible to the system.  I just gave it a small  shot of water to try to flush out the valve we'll see.

DB I got the part it was $33.   The vent is plugged so now to put it in when I feel rambunctious.

Now for the weather.   I just got home from the worse driving conditions in MANY, MANY years.   There are no banks so you do not know where the side of the road is . Visibility in front of the car was probably 15 to 20 feet tops.   It is coming down hard.   Looks like I will be plowing in the AM for sure.

Charlie, You and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.
Got back from central NY a short time ago.  Spent 5 days in the woods with little to show for my efforts.  Wind, cold and snow since last Friday night make for long days afield.  My buddies place is on the eastern edge of the lake effect machine and gets a daily dusting.  The good thing about it is you can see the deer from far off against that white background.  Nothing but does and fawns, no bucks.  I guess I'll have to sit on my deck and wait for one of those eight point bucks to wander by.

NWS says you guys in Pulaski are getting buried, 28" at 7 last night in Lacona, 22" in Redfield, 14" in Pulaski with forecasts of 1.5" per hour for the next 36 hours.  This is why I hesitate to travel up to SR in the winter anymore, a 2 hour drive can easily turn to 6 or 7 hours of white knuckle driving.  Charlie, if I were going to the SR, I would be very sure to check the NWS forecasts for that area, you are almost to Utica before you get out of the lake effect band.  And our experience was we could always get there fine, but the ride home was what we needed to be considering.  I've been in clear skies at Port Ontario and driven into a 0 visibility wall on 3 before the cutoff to Mexico, and I've spent 1.5 hours just between Palermo and Hannibal, which is usually less than 30 minutes.  I could do this in my 30's, but at 62, I can get a little aggravated, as can the bladder and prostate!  Time to get out the snowshoes with Korkers built in, if you are going to be hiking the river, and make sure you have all the winter safety stuff in the car if you are going to be around the hill, or anywhere down wind of the lake!

Lucky that's what make this snow snow dangerous.   Clear here, whiteout there.   All said and done about 6 inches  last night from around 6 to midnight and that's it.   I can be to Pulaski in about 15 minutes tops from my house and they got pounded.    Driveways clean and now the sun is shining at a balmy 10 degrees here

Came from cuse to Richland last evening... from about 3 miles north of square to the town of Richland line was brutal!!! Clints description fit the condition perfectly. I heard red field has totalled 44" so far. Let's pray no warm trend with rain comes out of no where

Good score on the back flow clint. There still are pre lead ban appurtanances out on the shelves. Sounds like you got one. The city plumbing supply houses are wiped out.

Andy we have seen it before with these early heavy snows and then it warms.   For hopes of all (and my ice fishing)   lets hope for for the best.
Home depot was $50, but had none in stock.  Lowes had a few at $33 so it was a no brainer because the rebuild kit cost $26 or so.   Changed it out and did not even have to drain the boiler.   Just flipped the water feed valve and the pressure reducer/fill valve  has a check in it so only a few ounces of antifreeze was lost. I love union fittings as it took longer to find the wrench than to change it out.   An autopsy of mine confirmed a sticky valve on the boiler side as the new one moved up and down freely and the old one did not.  I will clean it up and throw it on the shelf for a just in case in the middle of the night on Christmas spare.
Hunker down boyz winter is here, hopefully all get to get out a few times on the SR for some winter steel.

That friggen valve is still leaking after the change.   Hoping it just needs a chance to seat as that is what the guy who does most of my cleanings said when I called to ask him

Clint,
I think you will be happy with that shelter.. It is a good price . They are not really moblie but being out of the elements can sure make the day much more enjoyable.. It's size is just slightly smaller then the Kilzone but not by much and I can fit 4 people (not fishing wise, 2 fishing) inside to warm up..
The first few trips out for me this year were to try out the new gear, get some kinks worked out and basically just walk on ice again.. Yesterday I was solo and went back to the old Clam 2000 suitcase shanty.. Only because it is just so easy to set up, roomy for 1 (not 2) and pretty easy to move around ..
Like said the first few trips were a shakedown on how I will chose to deploy my now 4 shanties :)
I will say I walked on some places that had solid 6" ice and yesterday I hit a big water lake by myself that started at 5" and went to 2" QUICK.. It was a erie feeling for sure and I retreated back to the 5" spot..

Yup DB, there is always the weather thread :) and at 12 deg outside right now, ME LIKE the weather..
Hitting the hardwater at dawn (6hrs from now) before the 3-11 work shift tomorrow  :(

Peace & Tuna

PS..
Notice all the tracks , the crowds... Finding a spot was tough ..lol

It snowing like a mother here right now as it is moving south.  Looks like I will be plowing around noon if this keeps up.   21 degrees

HT I have a pretty old clam 2000 that has a few tears in the fabric that I am working on now too.  What limits me is size that clam will barely fit in my SUV.  That had a nice pull over there that I was quite interested in,   it would not fit in the back.  My usual spots for perch do not require much mobility, just a need to get warm.  Going to go to the ice show tomorrowif the weather permits and check the all out with a tape measure.

Well I have to get back to YET ANOTHER plumbing project as I have a leak in the freshwater feed to my boiler so back down stairs to sweat some pipes

Re: Weather thread 2013/12/13 11:38:38 (permalink)
gosh, I just took the clam 2000 outta the back of my Rav-4 before I set out this morning, with the flip over included..lol
Obviously I had to remove the back seats but I can fit 2 shanties in there.. A few years back I was running a subie waggon and toting 3 guys around every weekend.. I strapped the 2000 to the roof racks (which was it's home for the year) and we stuffed 2 jet sleds in the back with 1 seat removed.. If there is a will , theirs a way..lol

If the floor on the clam 2000 is shot, trace out some cardboard for a pattern and cut some luan (water seal it first) to fit on both halves.. Pop rivet the luan to the plastic floor and it will be great..
Honestly from what your saying I think the pop-up (hub) is the way to go.. I think you'd be very disappointed in a flip over.. They just don't have the space, the 2 mans are heavy as heck (80 lbs without gear) and the price for a good size one is outrageous..  I am using my smaller one right now as it's pretty light for an on the fly trip and mobile for moving around on the Ice but man, it is tight inside with the heater , vex and gear..

Please Keep all the snow up there.. I am doing another trip before work in the morning with some friends and don't need do be trudging through heavy snow.. We are expecting 12" ..ugh...

Man I wish . Sometimes I do fall asleep in the shanty if I'm alone . If I'm on the graveyard shift, I get real cranky when the supervisors want to be a Hero and try to save the plant over night. Nights and 3-11pm are the only shots for me to hit the ice so I take full advantage of it while its here.
I will get home around midnight tonight and be out the door by 6 am tomorrow :)
Come jan -1 a whole new playing field happens with vacation time so weekends ( actual sat & sun ) with friends will be even more time on the hard water. :)

Btw. No snow here yet but we got the plows on the equipment .. Man I hate snow..
