When was the last heavy rain up on the tug?

Thursday through Friday noonish... natural flowers draining from tug ranged from 2k-5k and these are smaller rivers than the salmon. Blow out is almost an understatement...

They were all flowing good late last week in to early this past week from last weeks make effect bands as well. When they bumped it to 1500 it hadn't even rained yet. Honestly, it wasn't fore site, it was last weeks runoff finally making its way to light house hill. Brookfield us doing a good job... it seems as if there's a 2-5 day delay for them to get their bearings straight though

Personally I am kind of happy about this (have to look for the silver lining).  Just look at all the fish that made it through the gauntlet of town to spread out.   Supposed to be fairly dry for a few days after today so we will see what happens next weekend or so.

If what you are saying is correct I would say they are not doing such a good job.
Bumping it to 2-2250 yesterday may have saved 2750 on Mon - Wed coming.
I would hope they are keeping a half step ahead rather than behind so poor Dawn doesn't get her basement flooded again.

Looks like maybe fishing the north side parking lot pool this week if you're right.

Crap I should be finishing packing for the anniversary trip to the Islands and I'm playing on the web instead.
Gonna tie some west coast classics low water style on #2 and 4 heavy wire hooks with lead eyes just in case.
Depthcharges!
Won't be in the zones on these flows.

Bob just thinking out loud as usual...lol

I've noticed that's been their track record lately though. I'd assume its their way of maximizing their profits while not completely blowing out the recreational fishery... just a thought...

I hope to get a 45 minute session in late today... hopefully is the key word

I thought I'd read that there best profit per cubic foot of release was at much less flow.
500 cfs sounds like what my foggy memory recalls and anything over that is diminishing return on investment so to speak.
Would be a shame if they let people get flooded again.
I would have to say a lawsuit might have merit then as it would seem they have a reckless attitude towards those whose property is ruined if they allow it to happen spring and fall for several years in a row.

Yes I've heard the same but if they were to hold back and run 500 the dam would blow. Man I'd hate to see another flood. That would suck. If I wasn't working most of the day Is take the ride for a looksy...

Do I think flood??? No...
Do I think flow increase from here??? Yes... as clint said we'll have to wait and see. Til then I may take you up on your suggestion this afternoon... my backyard spring flow should tell me what "that" will look like ;)

Really guys, I think they have made great improvements in management since the 2010 blowout flood..
IMO if they had not started the increase of 1,200 last week before the rains it would have been Real UGLY this week..
No complaints here.. We took on the hand from the cards dealt and made the best of things.. We found fishable water on the main river it was just not to be for me.. So glad Fichy scored and what a beauty it was.. Discouraged ? Yea I was a little but it was called fishing not "hooking", "catching" or "snagging".. Most of the spots I used far less weight then I might have in lower flows..
It was fun and thats what it's all about.. There is always next time :)

Re: Weather thread 2013/11/02 10:18:25 (permalink)
I agree with the better management as well tUna. but I disagree with the foresight Theory. As a 1200 release I believe was the result of the pounding lake-effect rain from last week into last weekend especially Saturday night.

I just checked the flow gauge on fish creek it actually almost hit 7000 last night.my gut feeling is theress gotta be a lot more water for them to empty out of the res. It is all dependent on how much water was in the res though. If the 1500 flow release a few days ago was a measure of fore site.. than kudos to Brookfield. If it was a necessary measure in part of playing catch up from days before??? Then look out bank anglers... raining pretty steady right now in the radar is showing dark spot surrounding tug hill...

what a great thread to express thoughts and opinions

Re: Weather thread 2013/11/02 10:46:37 (permalink)
Yeah, discouraged wasn't the appropriate word. It's a little strong in connotation. I get bummed when I don't hook up. It's a natural reaction. It WAS discouraging to have tried so hard in what looked to be good places for naught.  At least I didn't drive straight from work!  Brown Town may be a great redemption. You need another  giant hook jaw pic......  We could have joined a snagging Conga line somewhere and done better.  But better at what?  I could shoot squirrels in my back yard  and feed them to my cat, so what?  We're not there to put the boots to fish, jam fingers up the gills for the hero shot, and hope our supply of wading  ballast and storm anchor  ( I think that's what the pros call the 10 lbs. of lead and hooks  they carry for high water) lasts the next few drifts.  Or we could have  used the Spey and sz. 18 midge and cannon  ball  on 5x routine. In some ways, they pizz me off more.
Instead, we gave it a good effort and swapped some life news- what friends do.  Next time. Keeps us going forward and  make no excuses.
This forum doesn't tolerate weak excuse and misguided bragging. Mr. "1/0 eggs are better than streamers"  got a little lesson in that. It's obvious that no one here is down on any kind of sporting, legal method. All's good, long as it ain't what lots are busy engaging in.  After the rain Thursday night, I'm surprised it wasn't 3-4k.  I wondered about the flow, but can now  see it may have been a decent plan. I'm hoping for a drier period. Selfishly, I want to have some good conditions for a few weeks  this month.  November rocks!!!!!!!!

Well said Charlie.
Life is full of trials and tribulations. Some self imposed while others beyond our control.  Regardless, you make your best effort to persevere in the hope that you are rewarded.  I can't tell you how many times I went from zero to hero and back but more important than any fish are the memories of times had, good and bad.  Nothing can replace shared memories.  The quest continues for new ones each time we heed the call.

The snaggers are probably setting their alarms for 4 Am to get their spot in town.
Was really hoping they would run 2000 for a week!

They're dropping it at 9, so  in town it should drop back around noon?
They can sleep in with the time change , kick the dog, slap the wife, and stock the truck with garbage to throw along the river, before the first good fart of the morning. Life as a snagger is good.

Always figured it took fish a day or so to acclimate on quickly dropped water.

It has been my experience that they go on the bite in response to changes.  Also that they perceive the change in temp or flow sooner than we do.  If they drop it to 1500, that is still a lot of water, but I think if a fish comes up on your fly, you will get bit.  But there are a lot more acres where the fish could be than when it is lower.

I will say that as I crossed the ditches on my way north they were all running HIGH.
The Black was a monster.
And they were all carrying a goodly silt load.
Drove in and out of heavy rain 3 times between Scuse and Ellisburg to get to the graupel and 30 mph wind here in the islands.

27 an hour ago for a large swing in temp between yesterday and today.  If we did not lose this hour I would go after work during the week, but that is completely out.  May or may not give it a try today depends how I feel.  I need some time to get acclimated to the cold weather.

High of 37 only with windchill of 18... yup, big time difference. Working on someone's heating system so can't really justify getting out. Guilt would be the best description I suppose.

Yeah bob, yesterdays rain made most natural flowers sustain/plateau... believe or not, the trio to the north was more than 1000k higher the day before you saw it.

Enjoy your anniversary...

Then they dropped fast.
Looked like you could find spots that would fish on them volume wise but the coffee with cream color water is not for a flyflicker.
Maybe a day or two (if it will stop raining as the weather people say it will) for PRIME conditions.

That was my suggestion to lucky yesterday for your guys possible trip on Tuesday ;)

My fishing time is so limited I'm rolling around with my first fly rod (Cortland # 5/6 @8') with a light weight daiwa spin reel electrical taped to the cork... and a bobber set up on straight 6# maxima... its a perfect all around set up. My heart does lean towards the fly flicker but no time to tie flies at this point so I do what I can at this point...

Point for the long novel is that even when discolored and higher conditions are present, this set up does the job... and if I venture in to some smaller water, it fits just perfectly. I like it as a change up, and boy does this old Cortland feel nice when arched!!!

Re: Weather thread 2013/11/03 11:35:45 (permalink)
I went to the home field yesterday for a couple of hours, did a ~25 lb male king, pretty fresh looking, on  a swung fly, 6 lb hen chrome right in (6 miles or so) from the lake, and had 3 others on. Saw a couple of nice browns landed, and other chrome.  Crowd was moderate, a few poachers but mostly anglers.  As this is 15 minutes from home, it would be hard to drive 130 miles to ditch fish in Oswego or Jefferson County.  But USGS has the North Branch gage at Redfield on the Web now, and it is down to about 800cfs, add in another 600 from the East branch, and we're at equilibrium with the release. So if it stops raining, maybe they drop the SR to 1200 or lower, and then it is game on in  P2A town.  But if it stays 1500, I'm inclined to play with local freshies.  Chores now then a couple of hours before the way too early dark (I feel your pain, Clint!).
