Well about an inch last night, yesterday was nice but windy.  Reports that there is 4 to 6 inches of ice on Sandy pony, but it is VERY inconsistent some spots 2 inches.

Did not go up to the river.   I bought an old beater Arctic Cat 73 Panther that sat for a few years that fired with ether, but I cannot get running.  Rebuilt the carb and such  still no go.  Nephews are chomping to ride it so back working on it today

Ice is inconsistent here, too. A couple of solid and a couple of rotten....
Fished well though!   It'll be interesting to see how much run-off occurs this coming week with the warm temps.  The 750 didn't last that long.

Really ??
Nah, at least not around here.. My local waters that don't have snow are in perfect shape of clear black ice.. Night temps will hold them over..
ADK's or heavy snow areas, they will get real sloppy but if the lake has a good ice base, like many do, they will be fine..

I plan on ice fishing every weekend until the stripers run, steel spawn or the boat goes in :)
gonna be awhile..

HT the ice is VERY sketchy around here.  Anything North of Pulaski was ok at best and not until the cold last week.  This weekend was the first time most got out.   Been getting reports of 4  to 6 inches or so of black ice on Sandy Pond ect with folks seeing some spots less.   Many folks went swimming last weekend on Oneida.   Granted the warm and rain will do some good getting ride of the white ice, but we will see.  Weekend temps may not get below freezing.

That stinks !!
It's still 10 deg as of 8:30 am here . A nice one digit number where I plan on fishing this weekend. Lows still below freezing with the warm up coming.

Lots of people have been reporting sketchy and even dangerous conditions so caution to all.
A few places around however already have perm shantys with atv action on them.
Best to know your water body.

Hope you get some ice fishing in but the sr ain't a bad back up :)

its funny that we have no ice at all down here and every time i work at bass pro i have a few people asking about our ice fishing stuff....don't seem to understand the folks at the corporate offices don't send that kind of gear to stores that can't sell it.
now hopefully they will stop sending us the cat fishing gear from the mid-west including trot lines and huge (over a foot long) bobbers with built in lights   gees

Was in a big box  right after retirement bout 10 yrs ago looking for some Blue and Striper gear. All they had were the garden variety stuff that 12 year old kids are attracted to. In order to pick out the gear necessary ya hadda go through the whole department inventory and then it wasnt all there.
Store manager happened by and asked how the shopping was going- I told her and advised that 'fishermen' who will keep coming back do not return because their gear is not New England oriented
. Why come here when ya gotta go to a real tackle shop anyhow to get the job done. It was a nice polite realistic conversation. She then started asking personal questions and ended up offering me a manager job in the Dept on the spot.
I actually considered it and declined. She DID offer inventory control which I thought was unique for those places. Seems they all have some non outdoor fella someplace buying for the whole chain- to their detrement.

i wish we could manage our own inventory
we'd have some salmon and steel head stuff for sure
and much more suitable catfish tools for the susquehanna
but instead we have rows and rows of largemouth gear because we are bass pro and managed out of missori

Spot on-  Never believed the control offer would emerge and wondered bout an on the spot offer- more likely they were short handed and trolling.
Seems like whatever the buyers see on TV shows is what they fill the shelves with -  no idea bout the outdoors. If ya aint Bass fishin ya dont belong in those places .
Big Box outdoor store down 81 towards Syracuse was  similar. Odd considering how close to the SR they are and dont carry most of what ya find in SR Tackle shops.
The local shops wherever ya fish are the places to go. One stop - its all there.

Looks like the NWS dialed it back a little to upper 40's by Sun.  Rain on Friday likely.   River might not go up much after all. Mucho gracias  to the Admin. for adding the sub-forum links to flows and weather.   I doubt the ice in my area will be safe this weekend, but I 've caught enough to keep me for quite awhile.  I spent a whopping investment of 5 bucks on ice equipment this year- a jar of Gulp. Paid off in spades- quit while you're ahead.   Might hit the river again next week.  Anyone ever try any of the Berkeley products on steel?  They work very well on lots of species, including run of the mill bows-might try some left over grubs to tip my flies if it's slow.

Used the imitation sand worms and even imitation night crawlers - scented for taste of course- behind  a tube for Stripers. When trolled as slow as possible on bottom they take all species in Salt. That stuff is magic. No nippin either- they take it.

Re:Weather thread 2013/01/08 17:43:47 (permalink)
Big Bear-  Gander in Henrietta has everything you could possibly want for Minnesota Musky fishing, common around Rochester---NOT!  Nothing beats the old Ma anmd Pa's but the big boxes have destroyed that except in Towns like Pulaski.  And even good largemouth fly stuff like flyrod hula poppers are impossible to find because Jimmy ain't kissing no bass with a fly rod.
Fishy- One of those artifical trout baits was hotter than eggs down in Naples a couple of springs ago, I want to say it was the one that Pautzke had out, but it may have been Gulp in chartreuse.  I could not find any then, and I can't find it on the web (Pautzke dough that is, Gulp is all over the place).

As for Ice, the Albany area had a lot of that ADK dip into the sub zero, but western NY has had none, and I have heard NO reports of ice that could be safely fished.  And I heard about the Polar Bear event on Oneida! Stay safe out there!

Well in the 40s today and rain so I do not know if the the little ice we had will hold up.   Guy's have been fishing the pond for the last week and falling through Oneida daily.   With the nice weather forecast for this weekend I guess every butthole and his brother will be at the river tomorrow.........   along with me.     Probably go to my regular haunt , but if I am feeling spry I may take a walk.   I have one spot in particular that I want to try that I cannot get to in the winter unless the water is low as I have to cross the river and/or a few diversions.

Weather was as advertised today 53 right now.   All snow gone from my roof and a mere 6 to 10 inches left in the yard, deeper in the woods of course.  Was going to go up today, but dad sold a cow so I had to stick around to help the guy load it up.  Got my plow truck fixed and all the cars washed.   Time to clean up the garage make a pizza and watch some foot ball or take a nap.   My new Auger is still a virgin and I am kind of glad I did not get that Vexilar,  I have never ice fished with a finder and almost pulled the trigger.

Forecast for the next 2 weeks looks favorable for ice, cold and very cold and no snow to speak of here in Western NY.  Mad River Club Ice Derby on Sandy Pond may actually happen this year on the first weekend in February.  Remember if you go that you need to register each day, but you only pay the entry fee the first day you fish.  Registration is at the Sandy Pond R+G Club.

Looking at the rest of the week it appears that a Artic blast is on tap with wind and lots of lake affect snow.Think we might get a snow pack for the reservoir.
Sounds like the ice fishers kind of weather.

Changed quick,  drove to work in the rain drove home in a white out.   Alot of the snow on the tug melted.  A bit of snow here and there over the week.  We will see.   I have the next few days off, but It would take alot to get me to venture out in the bitter cold.  Thursday I would venture 15 below at least.

Maybe 8 inches tonight... possible half foot after that the next few days... it was crazy to see last weekends thaw melt 12" in one day...a northern trib crested just below 3000 cfs earlier last week... it looks like our january thaw came early as it usually comes early february maybe if we're lucky we'll get another good one in feb... id imagine with the water flowing at 1300 there are probably some monster winter strains coming in despite the cold weather... i imagine yesterday being so warm really thawed the tug a lot hence the water bump...although i havent checked myself, id imagine the eastern foothills are snow packed with much more to come...
Really wouldve loved to see the big lake today with the steady sustained winds... i saw shingles blowing off roofs today...lol... id imagine it looked more like ontario sea rather than lake...

Dime,

8-12 footers on the lake off Rochester yesterday.  The Great Lakes Surfers had a (frozen) field day!  I found the top to my firepit in the bushes 90 feet back from the grill.
Fishing yesterday would have been holding the rod tip close to the water so the fly hung just off the surface in the wind, and waiting for the fish to jump out to get it, Adirondack brook trout style!
