Weather thread

Well I decided to start this tread to discuss the weather up here.   I may not get to it every day, but when we have decent weather to speak of I will post it up.   Keep in mind for snow totals I live about 10 miles from the river Altmar and maybe 15 Pulaski.   Around here snow totals can vary up to a foot even in that short of time.
If you want to know something specific or are "coming up tomorrow"  and I have not posted jut throw in a reply and I will try.   I usually check the board a few times a day.

So yesterday the world did not end, but the "nice" weather did.   As of right now 1000am 12/22 we have about 10 or so inches of snow that has fallen.  The rain turned to snow much faster than expected, but  the ground is still warm and it still bumped the river up to over 1200 so we are getting a fair amount of run off as of right now.   The reservoir is officially full and has crested to the boards of the dam.

Whew just got in from cleaning up the driveway.  What a time for a wire to break rendering my plow useless.  Finally got it fixed and everything is cleaned up.

No clue why it dropped. like said above it says 900 till Monday.   With the ground still being pretty warm a little of this snow is melting.   I would not be surprised if the actual flow of the river minus run off is around 500 or so.   I would think we will see it bump back up .
My friend in Redfield said  they got well over a foot and farther up on the tug got 20 plus.   Here we got between 6 and 10 with much larger drifts.

Been a while since i checked in... nice reports, info and comradery guys... been too busy to fish. Sure wish i can soon as the past two weeks have been my type of water, and it looks like the next few will be as well...

Clint, i like the idea of this thread as i love weather myself and natural stuff that happens and comes along with it. Apparently most natural flowing tribs have crested and are waning nicely right now... they should all come to a hault with actual winter temps closing in on us in the next few days. Salmon river should be prime for some genuine winter steelhead conditions with perfect flow levels. Anyone whos gonna be getting time on the water enjoy it. Im looking forward to some time next week and weekend hopefully. Praying the natural flowers dont get ice jammed before i get to give em a whirl...

Happy holidays to everyone and as always, tight lines

Definitely odd, but definitely for a reason... the rain snow line was undefined with this storm and it ended up changing to snow faster than predicted in the upper reaches, while pulaski had pouring rain for a longer time... now take in to consideration the extended forecast. There is no threat of liquid precipitation or warm temps at all. Winter is here and the res is full which is a good thing. Maybe brookfield is keeping a closer local eye on the water system. With the faster rain toto snow change over they maybe decided to close the gates and save that liquid gold of theres for a more slow steady income producer??? And in turn its going to give us a great winter flow and winter water temps for some time to come!!!

Kudos to anyone who didnt cancel their trip and getting out tomorrow...wish i could be out there with ya

Re:Weather thread 2012/12/22 19:59:58 (permalink)
I was thinking that too DB.   Was supposed to rain all day Friday and ended up changing to snow very early in the AM.   Nice that they are keeping a better eye on this unlike this spring when they just "let it rip"  at 1800 for a week to 10 days even though the res was well below normal spring time levels.   Only 1 or 2 days at barely above freeing for the next week or so,  looks like winter is here.

Supposed to get 6 to 10 tonight we will see.   My tractor mounted blower leaves a bit to be desires as my reverse speed is a bit fast and I end up pushing a fair bit snow rather than blowing it.   It sure beats shoveling though.

Hopefully they are keeping a closer eye on it clint. As they are basically playing with fire. They have recieved much negative feed back in the past few years so i imagine they are/should be keeping a closer eye on it. This makes me wonder now what impact it would have on the river??? If they really started monitoring and managing this system better it would be a win win situation...what do you think??? They would benefit from maximizing their profit margins and the fishery would benefit as well... just a thought here, but i would think that the better they mamage the water, the more natural the river would flow maybe???? Would the river maybe come up and down similar to a natural flowing river??? I dont know, just using my imagination here. But i would love to see a more varying flow than a steady redundant norm...just look at the recent pineville chart, its up and down like a natural flowing stream... its actually mostly identical to all surrounding streams with natural flows... could be wishful thinking on my part, but hey... ya gotta exercise dreedom of speech sometimes

Better management would bee a boon for all.   Just seems that sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to their ideas of flows.

As far as the weather today, woke up to a fresh 6 to 8 inches this am.   Winds have died down to almost nill.  There almost seems to be more snow on the ground there was at any one time last year.   I was walking out back after cleaning  up and the snow is nearly a foot deep  or more,  broke through to a wet puddle in more than one spot.  Underneath the ground under is still pretty warm so a little melt off will happen until it gets froze up.  I am all cleaned so off to check on my granny, to the store to buy some milk and then settle downto watch some football and a nap.

clint, im out of town for the holiday, but i imagine there is quite a bit more than a foot in altmar, unless the saturated ground has melted from the sub surface...  you should be hitting the water when your errands are done!!!!

You aint kidding lucky... pulaski is calling for a foot plus... we all know that could end up being 2+ in altmar and more on the tug. Its about time... im happy for the local establishments that rely on the snow moblie traffic as it should be a banner year for them

Well we got a few inches on Christmas eve and that was about it.   It has just started snowing here so we will see what it brings.     It seems to me that the media (as in other things also)  over exaggerates many of the        " storms"  we have gotten over the last few years.   If I hear the word blizzard one more time.   C'mon 16 inches over 20 hours is NOT alot of snow for this area people.

It started snowing down here late this afternoon.  Calling for 3-6" in my area with a wintery mix included.  Sounded like rain /freezing rain a shortime ago which I think is far worse.  I would prefer all snow as opposed to the ice that comes along with a mix.  Heavy winds are expected as the storm moves by so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't lose power.

Where's this blizzard they were talking about.   Got about a foot a fine powdery snow.   No biggie for the blower and tractor , 1/2  hour, all gone.   Now the drive to work with all the people who think 4 wheel drive  means they have can stop better too.

So between 12 and 16 inches for the area.  No rain or freezing rain so to speak of.   Bear I am glad the river is treating you well

So at this time right now there is more snow on the ground than there was at any one time last year.

I got six inches of that heavy crusted heart attack snow.  Snow, heavy rain, freezing rain, back to snow, the kind of stuff that makes you hate winters in the coastal northeast.  I'll take two feet of powder over this stuff anytime.  Something headed our way this Saturday but not supposed to be too bad.

Rochester got 11-12" fairly wet and heavy on Wednesday - Thursday, and it has been snowing steadily since 7 AM with about 3" down now.  That ended my tentative plan to go to Pulaski today, I don't need a 6 hour drive home.

I used my snoblower on mine and 3 neighbors driveways Thurs.
Definately a foot of general coverage with drifts 2 1/2 foot of wet heartattack snow.
We have a Bday party to attend tonite so I did mine at about noon and there is a solid inch on it already.
Tiny flakes that don't look like much but add up quick.

PS I hate the sidewalk plow that will come thru around 1 a m and push a 5-6 foot berm on either side to go along with the bigger one the road plow makes (if they decide to plow side streets).

A few more inches last night nothing big.   From what I saw Oneida lake was pretty well skimmed  over crossing 81 except where the river comes into the lake.    To the east a bit it is still open

A few inches last night ,  nothing big.   Went from 18 degrees to 10 degrees in the last 45 minutes.   Will be below 0 tonight for sure.   Here is the kicker going to be 44 next Wednesday.
Am hoping for some safe ice in close up north this saturday.

Now I see the river is up to 750 until Sunday.   I wonder if they are  looking forward to the warm weather next week melting some snow.

WOW- both DSR and Whitakers reporting anglers having NO success today. Dont think I ever saw that kind of very negative reporting before.
Honest accurate and just the kind of thing that gives me a great appreciation for how things have changed for the good of anglers over the years.
NOT SAYING those places were ever dishonest but an observation of how things are now compared to the 'old days' where HOT reports were so commonplace by some shops when the fishing was COLD.
Those kind of reports will NOT keep fishermen from fishing- just will give realistic expectations. After all for most of us it isnt the numbers but the experience that keeps us coming back.
Fact it =its a slow Steel season and its a slushy time up there--Next week should be better though--
Might get up myself if I can get plowed out-fish ?? -who cares --would be nice but it aint the whole point- lol.
           Kudos to  DSR and Whitakers.

Supposed to get a small blast tonight.  Will spend tomorrow or Sunday pushing back the banks with the tractor.  Warmed up to around freezing today.

Well even with the colder weather I am getting VERY conflicting reports on ice conditions and even though I hear Sandy pond has people on it.  I am l leery about going out.  Might be time for a little run up to the river.....

WHOA they shut the water off early.  down to 285 tonight!!    Decision may have gotten easier.
