fly prices

just curious, but what does your local fly or tackle shop charge for pre-tied flies? ours charges $1.00 apiece with no tax. was looking through bass pro, for pheasant tails, they want $1.54 each.

the early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

THe flys I don't tye myself I buy at Sportsmans Wharehouse they are .99 cents there, and if you buy 12 or more they are .89 cents.. I use them for steel and everything else and have held up just fine never came apart or straightened on me. Some are nicer than others but in general nice quality....

any flies i sell i look at my materials and time. some flies take quite a while to tie. its not
necessarily the cost of the materials that determine the cost of fly. i have some patterns that in materials are penny's on the dollar for materials. that is using good hooks also. all the hooks i use for flies that i sell are mustads. they may not best the greatest made, but they aren't the worst either. when i comes to time is where you either make or lose money when it comes to tying. if the fly takes you 7 minutes to tie and your selling it for 1.00 your only making a little over 8.50 an hour. for side cash this is alright, but you can't live off of it. now if you are selling those to a store you are probably selling them for .50 to .75 a fly which drops you to 6.00 an hour. i have 1 pattern that i can tie, after material prep, up to 5 doz. an hour on a good day. its hard for someone in the US to compete with overseas tying businesses because they are so cheap. most people don't even care where their flies come from when they buy them. i would say most flies on the internet anywhere are probably from overseas. when people purchase flies off me i usually charge a buck accross the board. when sell them to a business i don't get that luxury usually.
