pre-cane b-day play in the 900.
My wife and I left early Sun. morning and arrived at the river to drizzle. Took me awhile to get any semblance of pattern on the fish. They were very specific about spots. Depressions just over the lip coming up out of heavy water were good. Good lies in the seam outside of haystacks also held fish. I went to the upper fly and stayed within the new 1/8 oz. weight limit. Wasn't really a chore at all. I had trouble landing fish, maybe because I really wanted to and rushed things. I didn't talk to anyone having any stellar success, anywhere on the river. Dime and drift boat guys that like the higher water may have a different story. The rest of the rabble, like me, had to work hard for a few to the bank. I found a theme with those that hooked up that I talked to using light colors. Light blue and an almost white with orange sucker spawns were good for me. Other fellows had luck on white/chartreuse and white/blue. I'm going to hazard a guess about NOT imitating leaf colors and the now washed out eggs being pale. I ran into lots of good guys, on the river, in the shops, in the lodge, in the stores. Made things seem like one big happy group hanging out. I netted fish for people, they did the same for me, swapped flies, guy gave me a package of peanut butter crackers because I offhandedly said we were getting hungry. Things like that make the SR seem like the best place in the world on some days. It makes it sweet to work hard and see a fellow you've been talking and laughing with finally have nice bright fish hung 3' in the air numerous times, and you want him to land it just as bad as if you've got it on yourself. And when you hook up he tries just as hard to net it for you as you tried for him. Strangers? The best of times erase those barriers. Leaves were bad in Schoolhouse. I got one fish there, the short while we stayed. 1x and keeping the tip in the water got that fish out of the heavy current and to the bank. That's my trick, too, 2 bob, in response to your thread. It's a good one, any trick for these nasty fish is worth learning! The wind came up and a branch came down and almost hit Nancy. That was it, time to go. So I hooked a number , got some to the bank, saw lots of fish in the air and all in all , had an absolute wonderful time. Stayed at Salmon Heaven. As I thought, my wife loved it. Cozy, quiet, friendly, clean. And they gave us a cash discount. How can you beat that? They're looking forward to seeing you Pafisher.
You're a well liked customer. We had a country buffet at Eddy's, even though we had a bad experience there. Gave it another try, and all I can say is they must have fired the cook that screwed up our meals the last time. It was very good, and for the money, Excellent!! I caught three small young of the year bows, any theories? Wasn't sure what strain or if they were escaped from the hatchery.
I saw a number come out of the water the way bait does when chased by a predator. Someone told me their father use to love to fish rainbow colored Rapalas. I would have liked your Dad, I bet, HT.
Enough from me. Thanks for keeping my spark up when I can't get to the river, guys.
