Glory Day Pics

So anyone have any pics they want to share of the epic coho salmon and steelie runs years ago?  I never got to fish them, but thought it would be cool to see what it was like.

No wonder the snaggers liked the old days. That hole isn't even fishable with out foulhooking fish.

Ok, posting some Ektachrome pics from the slide projector ain't easy, but thought I'd try to get a few for us oldtimers:

Trout Run, around 1977, cars would park on both sides of road, as well as the beach:

Note car parked on beach on right side:

Pig Pen and beach fishing at its finest:

Another beach fishing shot taken around 1978:

Trout Run at pigpen area, stacked with coho/chinook around 1977:

Casting Little Cleo spoons on October day into the surf

2 coho off the beach at Trout Run

Chinook caught trolling off Trout Run in 1980

2 coho, 1978:

Elk Creek above the tubes;   this was early October, about 1986 - note lack of other fishermen, truly the "glory days":

Found a few more (sorry about quality, taken many years ago with an old Canon AE-1, converted from slides)

Elk Creek, 1986, south of the "tubes":

Elk Creek, 1986, north of tubes:

Anyone remember the old 'falls' south of tubes, north of the "old" Whitemans's Bridge?:

Another shot of falls:

Another falls shot:

Chinook taken from falls area, about 1987:

Anyone have any footage or pics of when the tubes collapsed around 1985 or 1986?  It was on national news - created a dam -  I'll never forget seeing a small travel trailer floating down and through the tubes when it was shown on ABC News that evening.....!!

Thanks troutguy for bringing this back up. Cool pics that bring back memories. Glory days for me fishing steelbows were from about '82 through mid 90's. Lots of fish & all kinds of room. Big difference today. Still plenty of fish but can be a real struggle to find space. Started fishing the Erie tribs in 1981. Knew there were good coho runs in late 70's but had zero interest. Too busy casting for muskies at Chautauqua. Still fish the 'bows a lot but now it's just an excuse to get out & hang around with friends, but still enjoy catching them.

I never fished the creeks in the glory days so it is nice to see the pig pen being fished and the falls on lower Elk for the 1st time...WCW

My Uncle Zeke on the left - with hat backwards...ha ha...with my dad.

In Olcot - I'm guessing 1988 - Luckily I got to join them on a trip after this.  They both are the reason for my love of Great Lakes fishing...Spent many hours on the water fishing with these 2 clowns...Miss them both...

Thanks for those pictures from the past.I caught the tail end of the glory days for Steel around late 1999 early 2000's.I live in eastern Penna. and when my daughter married and moved to Mars Penna. I finally took a drive up to Erie while visiting one Halloween and wound up in the chutes on Walnut, caught a slew of fish and that was when I was "HOOKED".Had many good trips until recently and remember those previous years as the Steelhead fanastyland years!

Fishing the beach off Trout Run in late October;  was such a blast catching coho in these conditions - and seeing them porpoise and roll in between the waves.....

Elk Creek by railroad tubes....again, lack of fishing pressure was pick and choose a  spot back then (around 1985)....

Chinook caught trolling off Trout Run

Walnut Creek around 1982

Garcia 6' Conolon 5 star rod - $35;  Johnson Century reel - $12;  K Mart rubber hip boots - $35;  KO Wobbler - $2.50;  Fighting a coho  - well, you know the rest,,,,,

Coho late 70's:

Mid 80's - again, we could pick and choose spots all day back then......

Trout Run beach fishing for salmon
