Blue For Fichy

In honor of you I tied up some blue stones.  Tough to see the color, but it is baby/lite blue with a darker blue wing.  I know how much you like blue so here it is.  A little tough to see the color in the crappy pic's.  I added legs too.

Looks good, Clint.   I  sure as hell  don't deserve no honor, though.lol
It's not my go to, but it  works  like a charm sometimes.

Blue is a great color for steelhead; especially when combined with red, orange or pink... great fly clint!!!

Blue charm is an old school traditional wet pattern... im sure it would be a great steel fly

Because someone didn't know a traditional salmon fly? That's kinda ridiculously elitist, put that way.

Pretty sweet tie Clint.. I have had good luck with a contrast shellback color stone many many times.. I'm not sure if it's specific color however..
All my shu blue flys have been an egg variation.. Be it single, sucker or double sperm..

Actually I was feeling pretty blue all day after stepping out in the field of work.. Crazy people who have no clue or care..
So glad I don't actually own the equipment ..
Now if I only was so lucky to have binders full of women that wanted to tie all my flies too..
Instead it's just me and BB tying tonight, maybe a little Marley thrown in..

Thank's guys.  The wing cases have been coming out better when I coat them with Sally Hanson.  I like varying the color of the wings too as it a little different from the next guy.  Having much better looking Stones with the Mustad 3906b  than the tiemco 1530.  The extra eye length gives a bit more room to fit everything in, especially a bead if you want it.  Still have to get to my yarn eggs, maybe this weekend.  They are my bane as being left handed it is tough to find good sharp scissors to cut them.  I find myself trimming them a bit after , they turn out OK but It takes a few minutes.   I use  a pen tube to feed the yarn.
RJ do you use a 2x or 3 x hook for the double sperm?

Yea that looks a like it would be tough on that stuff.  I am constantly getting on my dad to take better care of our stuff.   Thinks nothing of jumping on the diesel tractor starting it up and going without a warm up, but wonders why it blows a ton of smoke until it get warm.

I had a friend that tied lefty, had a pair designed to have the proper  blade orientation. http://www.anvilusa.com/lefty_series.htm- expensive, but they last and last and fortunately, unlike some of the tools that adorn my jacket or vest, they never go near the water (or hence fall in it). I have a number of pairs I've collected over the years, none of them cut worth a crap left handed.

    Clint.
When in town if you pick up a Mustad 36890 (salmon fly hook) size if you can find 10 or 8.. They tie nice big stones..  Generally what I throw in high water or Oct>Nov conditions.. Not so much in low water winter conditions..
    They would be the 36890b > 10..

Another sweet mustad stone hook I just dug out and like is C53S.. Long curved nymph size 8..

For spring steel it's Mustad 36890B size 4 (snag so I been told ) hook all the way ..
    The Swap fly ;)

It pays or not, to play around with different hooks to find a comfort tying and fishing level

     Clint,
the dbl sperm or babine special which are simple egg patterns I tie on the
    39890 salmon fly hook..
    Here is a pattern:
    http://www.angelfire.com/wa/salmonid/fly49.html
This site is a huge resource for the species.. Many local fishers contributed over their career.
Be careful.. It gets addicting and many times success comes from keeping it simple , presentation , confidence and darn luck..

Charlie, Santy claus is going to get me a pair of those :0)
RJ thanks for the tips on the hooks.  I will check them out.  Your right, I have been learning the subtle differences in hooks and some things look better on different brands and sizes.  I have been tying a nymph like pattern on the C49s called the steelhead hammer and had some luck with it last year.
    http://dailyflytyer.com/2..12/hammering-steelhead/

RJ, I get what you are saying  (and you have said it before) that some times it is easy to want to tie and try every fly you see.  I am trying to concentrate on only a few.  Stones,  Eggs (Estaz, yarn, spawn) and a few simple Nymphs like that little green bean Charlie showed us.

A little jocularity never hurt anyone.  Nothing elistist in that.

Clint- Don't forget to tie a few streamers for the high or off color water days.   They are a lot of fun to swing, too, instead of the continuous dredging involved with dead drifting aggs and nymphs.  I like zonkers or bunnys, also Maribou's standard or spey style (maribou wrapped like a hackle around the shank).  When the fish hit these, there is NO QUESTION, hang on for dear life!

I have a few in my box that would fit that bill.  Just learning to tie maribou and experimenting a bit.

Jocularity? Is that tied like a Jock Scott?  Not familiar with it.
    Sarcasm on the other hand...
Rust brown/dark orange bunnies/bou and buggers work well for me on the swing . Crayfish .  Lots of them in the river and they're egg eaters. More of them around in low light. I'll be swinging those tomorrow morning Flesh/pink has been another favorite color combination.
