Fish virus hits Rome Hatchery

The new Rome Hatchery was hit with a fish virus resulting in the loss of Brown and Brook Trout crops.  The report in the NY Outdoors News states that the stocking of remote Adirondack lakes will take a huge hit next season.

Is this a new incident?  They just got cleaned up, and the ponds have taken a hit for the past couple of years, with some of the more remote ones getting no fish at all.  Make sure you check the lists on the DEC website when you are making plans for the next couple of years.

This is the second outbreak in the last couple of years.  This after spending $2.1 million to renovate the hatchery which reopened in the fall of 2011.  The fish were infected with furunculosis and despite efforts to treat the problem a decision was made to destroy 131,000 brown and brook trout last month.  It is not clear whether the problem was inherent at the facility or transported in when the state purchased 175,000 fingerling brown trout from Virginia in the Spring 2012.  The virus was first detected in the Virginia trout in late June 2012.  Within a month the disease had spread to the Adirondack and mixed strain brook trout, both known to be susceptible to the disease.  By September 2012 only 47,000 brown trout remained of the original shipment from Virginia.  The brook trout numbers had dropped to 84,000 when a decision was made to euthanize the browns and brookies rather than continue and perhaps stock diseased fish.

There was a short fall of brook trout for 2012 spring stocking. Many remote fly in stockings were halted in favor of easy more used brook trout lakes and ponds.
Remember however , a new brook trout record fell in 2012 and I believe this trend will continue.
Many remote places I fish really could benefit from a every other year cycle rather the every year. The reason I was told it won't happen was due to difficult planning such a task.
I always try to plan/target brookie ponds before the spring stocks.
For me I am a bit excited to see if the short fall produces more quality fish rather then quantity of fish

A lot of the ponds are air stocked in the fall, but I definitely don't like hiking all the way back in and getting into a bunch of 6-7" that have only been through one winter.

Well, this is really bad news for us pond hunters.

Long time LP resident and region 5 retired friend told me fall stocking was minimal for air..
More road side then air due to end of year budget..
NYSPD had a mission in the fall, green gardens & colombo hikers , so if dec could squeeze some fish on board so be it but not often..
For stocking purpose it was all about the spring, specific 2nd>3rd week in May for choppers.  And yes 4>7" pesters..
Nothing like cutting that skim ice for open water to catch a holdover before the birds drop..
Will admit, spawning fall colors are sweet !!!!!!!!!!!
Heading to a brookie pond on sunday & monday  :)

hoping they don't pocket the  hatchery expense money? so when a virus kills the hatchery fish, shouldn't the fish and game give fishing license rebates in 2013? how does it work?
