If you can afford better, don't buy one.  I have the Deerhunter and wanted to buy a better one after the 2nd trip to the range.  Traditions are for newbies, and I'm talking virgins.  If you've never shot flintlocks before, it won't take you long to wish you'd saved a little more and bought quality.  The sights are junk, and the gun I bought was discounted because many of the lot were recalled/returned because of soft-metal frizzens.  Mine sparks, but I guess many didn't.

I thought about the PA pellet because the packaging says you can use pyrodex pellets.  I've talked to a few guys that shot them, and they found half-burned pellets all over the range.  They weren't very accurate either I was told.  If you are buying it to shoot powder, then you may be fine.

I hope this helps, good luck.

The PA pellet  are the better ones that Traditions make. I bought my step-son 1  but he has never used it.(long story) I did not think that it was junk but it also was not a T/C.
As far as pellets go. They should not be fired out of flint guns regardless of who the maker is, unless you put a few grains of loose powder in the barrel 1st. Seems that the pan powder doesn't burn hot enough to get good pellet ignition.

No flintlock will shoot pellets reliably, including my TC Firestorm which is also designed for pellets.  I still shoot loose FFG.

Save your money and buy a gun that will go off when you pull the trigger.  IE: Thompson Center or Lyman.

I myself have a T/C, but i know a couple of guys that have the Pa Pellet and they like it. Nomatter what you decide on buying, if it has a breech plug, dont buy the pyrodex pellets for a couple of reasons, 1. They can only go in one way, and you'll have a hell of a time trying to ignite them if there in the wrong way.2. There to dirty, you can clean your gun for hours and still get some residue on a clean patch after you think its clean. Instead buy triple se7en pellets there is no sulfur in them, they can go in the bore anyway and there so much cleaner, so when its time to clean the gun i use gunslick foaming bore cleaner let it set for a while run a few patches through and im done, its so much easier. And one more thing about using pellets i always put the pan powder in the ignition hole first, then finish with the pan, iv'e found this to greatly increase your odds on the ignition. Have fun....

I have a traditions and have no problems with it and almost get a deer every year with it.  Personally, I think they are a pretty good starter guns.  As I mentioned in other threads a muzzleloader is only as reliable as the person that cleans it!

The hawkins have the rifling twist for Bullets and Sabots and do shoot them very well.

I like TC.  If you want cheap get the Firestorm you can still shoot loose powder with it and the breach plug removes.

If you want expensive get the Hawkin.  Ive been hunting with my TC hawkin for 20 years, with patched round balls and the steel sights it came with (not those fancy fiber optic ones) it shoots a 4" group at 100 yards from a lead sled (no flinch, lol). The only reason Im still shooting round balls is I made a 3lb coffee can full of them in the early 90s and they are only about 1/2 gone and im too cheap to buy sabots when I have balls.

I have  T.C. Firestorm and I like it.It's easy to clean because the breech plug comes out. I use regular powder in it,and have not had a non-fire yet. Remember to be mindful of your flint as to keeping it positioned so it will spark. I think I paid $350 for it. A little expensive but in the long run worth it. It's built well and looks like it will last.
