Awesome Day 9/26/12!!!

Fished the barrel hole from 6am to 12pm and hooked over 85 fish landed 23. The kings were taking crawlers and the cohos seem to like the 2 inch live shiners. I switched it up to Berkley power bait chartreuse and it seemed like I caught more cohos than kings and a couple chubs or suckers. Throw the pink worms in the trash they don't work at all. The salmon were so aggresive and every fish caught i had a hard time getting the hooks out of their throats. I suggest using a nine inch hook remover so you don't have to put your hands in the fishes mouth. All fish I caught were released without being harmed. Great day on the river....

yep had a very similar day
except the pink worms worked like a charm on the kings
till i ran out....they had taken them so deep i couldn't get them back and ran out after the 25th fish
the ho's were taking the blue sparkle power bait great but you had to have atleast a 1.5inch diameter ball of it
they seemed to like the kast master spoon better than the flies today as well
but then the school house hole always has been alittle different
saw a couple huge browns about noon too

    great day

BigBear, can you use spoons as long as they have a single hook I will pick some up from Fat Nancys tomorrow? Were you using the Berkley worms?

Dont have that bait problem- The trick is to lube your bait and line - the fish take it so deep it poops right out and then another does the same thing- ETC  ETC ETC- -Be sure and use that 60 lb test as there are generally a dozen or so on the line in just a few minutes.
Dont retrieve too quick though as they will all pop right off. Pull slowly and wait for a pucker.

Geez, I thought that last line was advice from one  hooker to another....hehe  Does KY Jelly work for the lube?
You do realize the ones that swim with the  light side up already, can't be hurt? Spoons work great for them.

All that pooping hooks aside, it sounds like its gonna get crowded fish wise real soon. Gotten a few reports that a crap load more fish have been coming in today. Had a crew there today (lower river) saying everywhere they looked it was fish. In their words, "here we go again".

make sure to use those 0/6 hooks with those night crawlers under a bobber with a 8 foot leader
it works best if you have about a dozen russian speaking friends block the top of the hole for you too

Try the new lifting wall at the Church Pool.  I always try to go by the  sound advice I got in the 80's -if it bounces add the ounces.

Thanks for the good wishes and LFZ advice Bob. Have actually been considering the little stream that cuts off to the right up between the wires.
A friend who uses 'natural' bait mostly has reported  uncooked medium sized Shrimp has resulted in multiple hookups  in the Ballpark area.

I fished the lfz this morning got there around 6am hooked about 20 but didn't land any they flew under tha Altmar bridge. A guy came up behind me and said can I see your fishing and drivers license I asked him why he said he was DEC never heard of them. He took my license and my pool and told me to follow him in my truck. He took me to a buliding in Altmar like a court house or something. Went in front of Judge who said I wasn't suppose to be fishing in the lfz with a bait cast or spinning reel. I had no idea. Thanks twobob now I know. They kept my pools and reels and hit me with a $750.00 fine and kept my fishing license. I'll still be fishing tomorrow at the barrel hole with a Zepco 202. I will post pics my freind took of me getting taken by DEC.

Scooby- you are clearly a 'newbie' to the SR--
When fishing the LFZ when its closed it is best to do so from the North shore - be sure and go up around the bend so as NOT to be readily seen from the bridge.
Only wear sneakers and loose pants and ALWAYS use borrowed fishing gear. It is best to also carry a light pack with a space blanket -water and a MRE.
BE WATCHFUL- immediately upon observing anyone around -specially wearing green shirts-drop the gear and hotfoot quick as a bunny across the nearby large field directly into the thick woods well North of the river.
ALWAYS carry your cell phone to contact a friend with a car so he can pick you up wherever it is in Orwell that you end up.
      Tight lines--

i've always found that if you are going fish someplace when its closed its best to do it as effeciently and as quickly as possible ....so when i hit the lfz or dsr at night i just bring the tuna rod with 50 lb braid and the michigan crickets....i can hook em and land em and be gone before the dec guys can finish their doughnuts
amazing at how effective some fly patterns are!

    you're welcome.
i am only a newbie so i am glad i was able to help you out.
i would go back to the lfz if i were you.
what are the odds that this dec man you mention will be there 2 days in 1 week.
besides 20 fish in a morning isn't that terribly bad.
i remember once back in the mid 70s that i got only 15 or so in a morning.
of course there was a moritorium on stocking salmon back then so the numbers were less.
good luck to you whereever you go.
    golden beetle out.

rg are you talking about the little trickle at the wire hole or the creek that is just above the lfz.
the second is the best natural bait fishery i have ever encountered.
just snag a hen cut her open, grab a baggy full of eggs and let the rest flush into the current.
the hen might get a ticket for chumming but that isn't my problem.
