October?

Being that the run is apparently happening now, what am I looking at for the first or second week in Oct.?  Am I better off going futher up river at that time?  Also, why does everyone hate on eating salmon so much?  Smoked salmon is pretty **** expensive in the stores and restaurants.....wouldn't you rather catch and eat your own?  You can smoke pretty much anything and it will taste pretty good.

October is excellent fishing for all species. Many much prefer it over Sept. KIngs- Coho- Steelhead and Browns will continue to come in for some time= this is just the beginning.
These Salmon are not Atlantic Salmon like you find in the stores.  They are Chinook (King Salmon) from fresh water as opposed to Salt water and do not have the dark red meat but rather a pinkish meat when very fresh to a lighter color later on.
They are ok smoked and to me taste somewhat like a thicker stocked Trout otherwise. Frankly I prefer a Steelhead for smoking.
If you see Michigan Salmon in a store it is a Chinook from Lake Michigan- take a look at the difference compared to an Ocean dwelling Atlantic if you can at a market.

On top of that the longer they are in the river the more the meat starts to degrade.  Due to the end of the life cycle as well the fish storming up the river.  When muscles are used or stressed different chemicals are released causing the meat to change texture and taste.  Just like if a deer gets shot and runs a distance and/or suffers with the shot before found the meat tastes differently.

Last year, I went up the 2nd week of November, and about all I saw were the "zombie" kings, and a couple nice looking cohos.  I didn't get any of course, hopefully this year is a little different.  While, I still have no clue what I'm doing, hopefully the larger number of fish will score me a couple.
