I've heard reports of a few seen/ caught in the lower runs of Walnut, and fish coming up into the mouths in the mornings/ nights. They are calling for a decent amount of rain this weekend, I would expect a first run then.. I'd wait till next week and check it out, I mean if you just love steelhead fishing and go as often as possible and the drive's not too bad, you could go up, but I usually don't go till the last week of September at the earliest, and my first trip this year is scheduled for October 6-8

ive been fishing for steel for about 10 years, and most of those years there has almost always been some steelhead in the lowest part of the creeks by the first week in sept. some years more than others, but they are always there by now. the no flow of the creeks makes it really hard to catch them. yes there are some steelhead there, yes the creeks need a steady rain for a couple days, no i would not go until it rains alot unless you have nothing else to do or you are good at fishing 6x tippit. i landed 2 and missed 4 or 5 this past weekend. the fish where sitting backwards in the creek making it hard to get them to bite.

Are you serious. I know this question makes me look like an idiot, but really? I have never seen a fish laying backwards in a stream. If you were joking, then yeah, I'm an idiot. If you were were serious, then I just learned something. Cool.

The trick is to get your spoon surfin. Try to get it to ride the top of a wave. If that doesnt work, than PULL.

Last year I was on the nut when there was litterally no current, and yeah there were fish sitting "backwards" and just swimming around like in a pond, but again, there was noo current so I guess it's kinda like saying a fish in a pond is sitting backwards, there's no up or downstream.  During regular flows I have never seen a fish backwards, that would be kinda ackward lol.

yep low creeks, no flow, backwards!  Ive seen it.  The only way i ever caught a fish that way was jigging a bugger or a micro jig around them until they get mad enough for a reaction strike.  But fishing in those conditions really isn't fun.

fish low gin clear conditions enough and you'll see plenty

    tech tip in those no-flow conditions;

think weightless ..stuff that "suspends " in the water .
Watch for fish in the pool  that seem to get "anxious" while your junk is in the water.
BTW, that fish might be 10-15 ft away
If your suspending junk gets NO activity from fish...change it to something different

If you drop something in and the school  of otherwise completely uninterested fish start to get agitated and moving around ...you're in for a great time of gin clear pool  fishing

If you fish for steel in the fall the way that you fish for brookies in the summer you will have no problem with low clear water.

bitty trout are boring to me ...so i don't know anything about that

i do know when you have the right wiggle or tickle on the end of your line, you can crush steelies in a  gin clear pool
Best thing about sight fishing, you can see if fish are reacting positively ..if they're not, tie something else on til you get reaction

    Mr.Slickfish

More than once I've peeled em from the pod with a 2/5 cleo.....gin clear

zaccally ...lots of things will work on any given day
    swimming jigs
    Rapalas
and lots of "out of the box thinking " things too

Many years ago I couldn't buy a bite in gin clear hole full of fish...that i had ALL TO MYSELF
i threw everything i had at 'em and didn't get a look.
i had some bass stuff in the pack..i tied on a 1/0 hook and put on a chartreuse/pumpkin seed soft plastic craw.
as soon as it hit the front of the pool, fish were chasing and slashing at it...one actually drove to to the bottom and smashed it on the creek bed with the side of it's head ..never seen anything like it before or after in 20+ years of steelin'

I watched a dude beat a hole full of lethargic suspended fish ..he tried minnows, wax worms, maggots, single eggs ..
    nada for several hours .
i was having moderate success on itty bitty brown buggers (the guy that tied them for me calls them "bunny buggers")
I told the guy to try something brown

he tied on a brown hard plastic grasshopper bass crank bait (the only thing he had brown)
The fish smashed it on near every cast...he caught  fish after fish after fish after fish .
    i bet 10-12 fish on 15 casts ..
as soon as it hit water fish were busting it in a matter of seconds

I've had many days like that ..on heavy  PRESSURED holes too ..surrounded by troutgards getting skunked beating the water to a froth .

i know many of us have had the same happen ..that's why i don't question a report of "umteen fish caught" on an terrible bite day for nearly everyone else

the point is, gin clear is "generally" a tough bite...but  tie on the right wiggle on the tickle and fish will slam it
and don't be afraid to think "out of the box" with selection

doesn't take rain for steelies to enter .
as long as there's enough water to get in at the mouth of any creek they'll come in

Thinkin about makin a trip up there within in the coming week just to check things out an look for some new holes.  The guys that live around the creeks any input would be helpfull. Is it even worth the trip yet?

i don't live around the creeks, but I checked out Da Nut  for you today
    Got there around 4:30pm
There were  4 fish in the Stop Sign hole and no one to pester them  ...so I did
there were four or five duuds fishing the Manchester hole
One person dunking minnows at the wall  hole between man hole and Stop sign

if you're looking for steel, it's a little sparse right now.
even more sparse after some  young duud came walking from upstream with three big  chromers on a rOpe
One of 'em might of  went 12 pnd or better
i could tell he was a snAggAr , cause he had on green neoprene waders ( a dead giveaway)

if you're a fanatic and want to check out the creeks for changes, 'mon'up
if you're wanting to  slam steelhEDs  in the  creeks,  you might want to wait a little while longer
