Worst thing is their guides and season pass holders get first crack at the good spots, then the rest of the 45$ paying slobs get whats left. The rest of the river has great spots, dsr has been that way for along time where have you been?

Don't fish on their property (I wouldn't fish on yours without an invite) or go lobby your congressperson..

Yeah, with so much of the river public there are plenty of good spots.   That said I would gladly pay $45 for the chance at fresh semi  unmolested fish IF they were there.  The only  problem I have with it is that there is no REAL way to know what is going on down there so it is somewhat of a gamble.  I just  e mailed and asked to be put on the waiting list for a season pass, but have not heard back yet so I may just drive up.  My thought is that being local I can fish early and often and get my moneys worth.  Last I heard 2 to 3 year wait though.

Good point bout IF they are there.. After fishing DSR for years  stopped because of being up so much -recall   non productive days down there when fish were spread throughout the rest of the river.
There isnt a run every day and some  they trickle in and some  not- but when they are coming in its  a great place to be.
If its a tough AM move upriver  but ALWAYS go back that evening. Have had some great evening runs there.
Like the man says- 'the price of a round of Golf'.  Really worth a shot for at least one day of a  2 or 3 day a year trip

don't have a lot of coin but it sounds like a good place for a beginner like me to fish without getting in the way to much.
my friend has been there and told me of a couple places to fish.
anyplace there with room for a beginner but not wall to wall like he says some of the big name holes are.
never fished a river that big.
are there good places to cross or do you have to keep on the side where you pay to park.
sorry about trying to give the vulcan mind meld on you all.

best to stay on the side you start on unless you have low water or know the area to cross very well....couple people a year drown trying to cross when they shouldn't
most guys are pretty happy to help newbies, just ask nice and most of the time you will get way more information than you need :)

btw, i blast on the dsr because they make you pay for access to a public resource, but i will say when its right...it is the hottest place to fish on the river

It would be incredibly costly to put up a handicap parking sign at the unemployment hole and keep one space. You could crawl on your belly dead drunk from there and still catch fish. One of the best fisherman I've seen on the river has one arm and fishes either side of the bridge with an automatic fly reel. Easy access is the key, not some overblown concrete monstrosity that costs in 6 figures. If it isn't some grandiose scheme that gets tons of publicity it doesn't get done. I'll throw this out there- if you know a handicapped person that would like to fish and you need help taking them or can't do it yourself- ask me- I've helped people with many  types of disablities, glad to do it.  Most people will give a handicapped person some space to fish with a smile, still some decent people in the world. I won't fault DSR for not having a handicap access, be pretty tough from the main lot, you'd need a road put in. I bet if you told them you were bringing a handicapped vet with you that didn't have a mobility issue , they'd let him in for free. Just might test that.

That automatic fly reel is made in italy... he coincidently stumbled upon it through a friend...fits him perfect...great guy and fisherman...he always fished spin gear up until a few years back....now he frequents those rocks (an old time favorite spot of mine ;)

For handicapped at dsr....i guess there is no "actual" handicapped access, but there is that side diversion on the south side of the island above the clay hole...believe it or not, many fish run that side even in low water and where it comes to the head of the island there is some real nice flat water that dsr has picnic tables set up behind one of their lodges...seems as if a wheelchair fisher could fish from there if they wanted to... twobob, if youre willing to spend the money it could be a good first timer experience for you for the very reason you said...you wont get in too many peoples way...definitely read the water and yes you can cross down there, but i only suggest it if you know and understand the power of it and are also capable of reading where the areas to cross are. There is plenty of water to fish from the parking lot side though... and please, wear river cleats whereever you decide to fish.good luck and dont be affraid to ask questions..

As far as a handicap parking spot it would be just like every other place you go.  How many times do you see someone park at a store in a HC spot  and just saunter right in.   Some slob would take his mothers or grandmother pass and park there.  Heck I have a pass in my car almost all the time as my my dad uses my car to take her to appointments as she cannot get in his truck.  He just leaves it in my glove box.

Dsr did host the healing waters. They have wheelers and trails so a disabled can have access. I'm sure they still support them:)

    As for fishing there.
    Awesome !
Relenquished my pass but still return when I can.

That is ALL there is at the staircase I think there are 2 spots.  Other than that you have to park on the street and walk.   They have always been empty whenever I drive by them.

Great post Charlie - have seen the fella with one arm frequently in the Kiddie pool-generally on the House side- He is amazing and is generally into fish even when others are having difficulty. Have watched him after break offs and his ability to retie is awsome.

Dime, I belong to another site where we put a bunch of donated money together and donated some of those Mattarelli reels to PHW.
Only autos I've ever seen that can fight big fish, as they're clutched, not just a wound up spring. I've fixed up some old Martins and Shakespeare autos, but they're only good for small fish. Tuna, I'll have to contact the DSR and ask about access for the handicapped. I don't want the guys I take to the Battenkill  in Sept. to have a one shot deal. I want to offer to take  some of them on trips if they want. DSR would be a good one.

Charlie, ask them about access from the route 13 side from one of the lodges...id be shocked if they said no...

Yeah Dime, That would make for some bad publicity and would possibly create another angle for future income. I doubt they would turn that down.

Db that is really a great access point just above the spring hole for a handicap . I was thinking the same thing last night.
One can easily drive there (as lodge guests do) with a vehicle.
Ain't no fish ( especially trout) in that channel though ;)

Was thinking about the  $45 a day fishing fee in DSR that initiated this post.
When ya get right down to it the whole fishing experience one can get out of a trip or two a year to SR is not all that expensive when compared to a week or so  in any kind of regular vacation setting.
The license -average priced average quality rooms -plenty of campgrounds for those who like that too-decent food of average prices- some annual gear and gas. If you WANT you can add $45 a day to fish DSR too.
In total its NOT all that an expensive way to Vacation compared to others that quickly come to mind. That even if you chose to fish DSR each and every day.
Considering that some are even considering the folks down there as a likely benefactor of a Handicapped spot it makes it even more obvious how well DSR is perceived by many. They even hosted last years  Veterans fishing trip too.
Heck -Barkley is the one who got the State to install the SR Hatchery providing the fishery in the rest of the river that we all enjoy free  too.
Been a few years- gonna have to go back down there this early season.

you make a couple good points retired....and the dsr can't be beat when its good
i still get irked by the whole pay to play thing, but honestly i don't feel like that price is out of line
but that is the wonderful thing about this country, we can all choose

It's good to have chooses, as many others i prefer the riverr but i also think that prices are reasonable and everybody should try it.
    It's worth for the money.

My first trip to the DSR was as a Salmon River Clinic participant led by Griz.  It was a tremendous success with over 60 participants several years ago that included breakfast at the DSR, lunch on the river and a dinner session with speakers.  I will never forget how much I learned about fishing the Salmon River and the excellent programs included in that clinic.  We all received hooks, slinkies, salmon eggs, leaders before fishing and then participated in a raffle drawing that night at the dinner.
