killing skunks

Any trappers out there? How would you kill a skunk so that it would not spray? I heard that if you shoot it in either the head or the lung-heart area it would not spray. I am not sure if which one is correct.  Would appreciate it if some one with experience could tell me .thanks  sam

Don't shoot it in the head----- if you "Are Sure" you can hit the spine shoot it there, otherwise gut shoot it if it's in a trap and come back an hour or so later.  The better thing to do if you can, is set a box trap partly covered with a blanket or other dark cloth and set it so when the skunk is in it you can cover the top and all sides and still carry the trap by the handle. You can then carry the trap with skunk to where you want and either shoot, drown or release the animal. I've done it both ways with many skunks over the years and never had them spray. Sometimes they will emit a bit of smell as there muscles relax after death.

I was going to shoot them, even bought a box of CCI low noise .22 shells, but I couldn't bring my self to shoot one before trying to get rid of them by trapping with a box trap. Old age I guess, but I figure that they are only trying to :get by: like the rest of us.I heard of the blanket trick, but was leery of trying it. However I finaly got enough nerve to try it on 2 skunks that I trapped under my deck this week-end.It worked great, the hardest part was trying to cover the trap after they were in it.I didn't cover it first, but I guess I will from now on.Surprized me that even though they were in the trap over-nite that they didn,t spray, but there was no smell on the trap or in my truck,or even the towel that I covered the trap with. i am going to let the trap there a couple of more nites in case there are more. thanks for the replys.  sam

Little Golden Malrin and coca cola does the trick. Mix it up in a bowl near where there living, look for the dead body in the morning. This may kill other animals such as coons and possums too, fyi.

I heard that anti-freeze worked also, but I think that the makers of it had to add a additive to it that made it bitter, so that animals wouldn't drink it,as it was non-discriminatory & would kill any small animal that drank it.I think that trapping is better as then you wouldn't have to worry about a animal crawling under your porch before dying.  sam

Get a long Y-shaped stick or something of the like and pin their back end down, then shoot them.

    DONT USE THIS

it is dangerous to raccoons, dogs, housecats and all other animals with a sweet tooth.
seen raccoons drop dead right in the bowl, this stuff is toxic..
    seriously

Exactly... But it's only fly poison...

The blanket over the box trap works well. Just make sure you have a water source deep enough to submerge the trap, and don't remove the blanket first...
