Thank you airport security!

Just returned from an awesome trip to the Biggorn river last night. Woke up this A.M. To unpack the stinky waders and found that one of our four rods were missing from our checked luggage. I am 100% that it was packed but called the outfitter to double check and the Billings Int airport. It was my dads combo. Delta told me that it is TSA's problem and I had to make a claim through them. Has anyone dealt with anything like this? Do you think my dad has a chance of being reimbursed? This is a huge bummer cause he just bought the setup and was the first time he used it.

Bummer, thieves are the worst.  Sorry.

It's never happened to me, I am paranoid of it happening.  But any time I fly with gear, post 9/11, I always carry on rods, reels, flies.  Always.  Especially the flies, they are irreplacable.

I hope you had a solid trip otherwise.  Any pics?

I do the same as D-nymph, except leaving the Bahama's. Bahamian customs will not let you carry on your reels (with line) or flies on the return to the States. Reels without line are ok. You have to place flies and/or reels with line in your checked bags. Going into Bahama's from the States is OK for  rods, reels and flies.

Yeah, bummer.  I was just in Colorado at the end of July, and it was my first time flying with fishing gear.  My 4 piece rod was packed in the suitcase which was fine, but I had to check my 2 piece rod(w/ case). It made it there and back fine, but I didn't feel comfortable.  From now on I'm mailing my rods or getting another 4 piece, although my rods weren't lost/broken, just don't want to take that chance.

I always take my rods in a travel tube on as carry on, and put my reels in a small carry on bag.

I don't think you can take the flies on as carry on though, can you?  I'd think with all those sharp hooks, that they'd ban them.

What DryFlyTU said.  in country flights ok, going out of country ok, but from bahamas back to US not ok.

Just take off your spools and check them.  Still keep the reel and rods with you.  Figure it this way:  if you lost them, would you rather replace the spool or the whole darn thing?  Big difference in prices.

You get the wrong person in airport security that either fishes or knows the high value of some fishing gear, it's too easy to "vanish".   Especially in areas where they see alot of fisherman come and go.  NEVER check a rod and reel combo, carry it on!!!!!

At least your trip wasn't ruined by it being taken going there............
