It really depends on the weather for the early show Chosen. If we do get some decent rain and cooler temps then mid August like around the 15th should have a few poking around. If not then the Labor Day release (water dependent) will bring some in.

Sometime in mid August the local kids will be out in the Needle with shorts and sneakers casting away. To me thats the best indication of the real start in any kinda fishable numbers in the lower to mid river albeit very thin and generally NOT what anybody calls a run.. Those kids ALWAYS are first to hit an occasional fish and seem to pave the way for others who see one here and there get caught. It is unfortunately also the time where some get a bit overly excited and post up that "it" has begun causing some to drop work and come up for the RUN that isnt usually really started yet. Just some 'scouts' showing up most often. For any kinda chance ya gotta stay real low that time of year-and dont get your expectations up too high either. It IS better than sittin around the house though.

It is tough to go against what the locals do, they are the ones that taught me a real long time ago. Also Retired you are spot on with the sure beats sitting around the house, no matter how slow it is. Chosen I wouldn't stray from the 23rd for early action. Early action is alot of hit or miss and unless you live close enough for a suicide trip, I would wait till the 23rd. I have made some early trips on the "ton of fish entered" claim that turned out to be bogus claims or the fish did an about face and returned to the pond. But that time in September you mentioned has always been good to me. Patience, they'll be here before ya know it.

Love that 'ton of fish have entered' line. Its da truff. Quickly now it will be "huge run'-'the regulars are catching them'-'they are spread throughout the river'-' its spotty but they are there'-'its HOT'-'best in years' -'another 30 fish day' and 'bigger than ever'. Then we will go fishin and find out for ourselves. Some of us will have already been there and wonder where the guy was who made those reports and others will believe it was right where they were catching some. I will say however-at the risk of starting a war-that even though I have not been down there for a few years now the DSR is the very best place to fish fresh, unmolested, biting 'earlies'- or even lates for that matter. Was gonna go down last year and never made it- perhaps this year. For some idiotic reason I simply enjoy walking the river fish or not. Sooner or later they really will be 'spread throughout the river'.

It hit that a few years back nice and early and didn't pay a cent to get in. Came in by Black Hole and picked away at them all the way down to the wall and back. Did not see a river guardian all the way. I looked at it as a trip to Alaska, where you have to watch your back for bears. It was actually quite fun, kinda like sneaking around the girlfriends house without being caught by the parents! Lol! I don't care who you are that's fun right there.

A great morning--Hey this IS the poor mans Alaska anyhoo---- My Uncle Ted had fished Alaska many times and when I brought him to the SR -some time ago- he quickly said that the SR fishing was as good as Alaska if not better. He also advised that though many dont realize it most of those -'out back'-Alaska trips are with outfitters who maintain Hatcheries on their leases to increase the numbers and support the fishing. Sounds like put and take to me----similar similar --cept for the Grizzel Bars

Well, now that we're getting close i'll take a shot at this one No moisture coming up anytime soon. Dewpoints last night and tonight are high 40's. Extremely dry air... although this may make the upper res. Decline more in levels, at the same time it will drive water temps down overnight with the cooler nights. First guess: this tuesday will be the first noticable salmon down in dsr reported Second guess: saturday the 25th will lead to increasing presence of salmon with tuesday the 28th being a decent push of salmon... Whats the prize if im right

In August 2007, which is the comparison year so far to this year, the magic dates were the 28th and 29th with small pods of fish entering DSR. I fished the 30th and nailed a silver 20# king. So Dime your guess' might be spot on.

Tuna, i had hit them on a thursday and friday. From what i saw it was the same fish two days in a row as they never went above the flats. The week before my brother and a friend had slammed the hoes as well...07 was an overall great coho year. I remember when the lfz was closed for two months it was loaded from bottom to top with cohoes... For the trout, something tells me theres gonna be a lot of early steel running with the first large run of kings... cant wait

Im sure we have seen each other Dime. One of the strangest trends I have recorded with these fish is that they love to run heavy in the worst conditions, ie; high water temps and low water. Days I have passed off because of what I thought were crap and no way these fish would run, later those evenings im reading about all the sore arms and oh and ahhs while im banging my head on the table. Had too many of those to count. If that river temp drops even so much as a degree and a half, it could spark a push. I've seen it happen.

Im not a note taker myself hook but i agree with you regarding low water and warm temps. Since 1990 ive seen quite a few low water blitz runs. In either 02 or 03 there was an early run that came in september 1st for 3 days straight and it was mixxed with many large steelhead. Maybe you can specify which year it was with your notes In 99 dsr opened early and there were quite a few fish around on opening day.in 97 4th week in august there was a nice pod of kings that were stuck in the joss hole... Then there was 98...but we wont beat that dead horse anymore than its been beaten

You got me Dime. I can only account for the early run of steel with the kings in 01. Before that I was too busy chasing tail to take accurate notes. However in 98, 3 of us battled chrome kings in the staircase the whole day and that was August 28th. There were only 5 other fisherman in sight upstream and downstream the whole time. That was AWESOME! Like I said last year most people know of me because my fishing partner is my wife who is usually the one outfishing everyone on any particular stretch she walks up to. If a great looking blonde walks up to ya and acts innocent conning you to let her fish, don't give in, be strong, she's evil! LMFAO!!

Two even next week is hit or miss, but your only 2hrs out I would make a run for it. Im 2.5 hrs out and don't mind getting there at least once a week. You'll know when they are moving, just watch these forums they get real chatty when sharks show up.

Well, dsr is getting increasingly better by the day. The port is now starting to fill up with pods...with the warm temps coming the next few days it could be just enough to stress them to the point of running...seen it before...
BY NO MEANS DO I RECOMMEND WASTING A TRIP...AT THIS POINT ITS NOT WORTH IT...
