OK--sittin here gettin real itchy- Cant be up for about a week and when I get there-after lawn and house stuff- its August fishin------ That means longgggg hikes along a low river lookin and blind casting rifts seams and small pools in the low water conditions. Down low of course. Last August was working the West side well below the 81 pool into the Ballpark area. Thats the wrong side to fish from cause of the steep banks and trees but -hey- why not--had very low expectations but at least it was fishin and castin and tryin. Got to some fast slate covered steep banked areas by the head of the Ballpark and spotted a tail flash in a large fast deep pool. I wouldnt fish it cause I had no place to go from my perch after a hookup. Steep banks woulda prevented me from any possible movement downstream. Waited for a fella working upstream on the East side and told him there was a fish in the pool- IMMEDIATE HOOKUP--watched a King come outa nowhere in the deep part and slam his presentation as it tailed out- it was a race for the lake. Glad I hadnt even tried from where I was. Funny thing was that about half dozen other Kings bolted from the pool as soon as the guy hooked up. The only fish I had seen in about 4 hours of fishin--- THATS Early August. Cant wait-----

Hey PA- it was a beautiful thing--- the guy was using those orange egg imitations with very little weight -and it went deep in the pool when he cast to the run leading in and as it came up into view heading to the the tail the fish actually came up and kinda sideways to slam it. Fish never slowed down either -just kept buzzin outa the pool and down.

Been thinkin about it and thinkin about it and something gotta be said here-Down River in the early season with fresh un chased and un molested Kings yea- even I can get a bite now and then. Up River later on when the fish are running the gauntlet and have been around a bit it can be a very different story till real late when the crowds are gone and some occasional fresh ones are still coming in. Now and then with a deep unmolested pool and a number of fish a Taker can be had -but not so very often up river during the HOT times. Yea they will nip and spit behind the reds all during the spawn and wherever males are hanging out around a single female about to lay eggs but they do that so quick ya would have a hard time hooking one- if you wanted to under those conditions. Think thats why many regulars say they will fish Kings kinda early and very low then come back later for the Steel. That does not mean that they NEVER Bite as the season progresses just that if you are waiting for that keep your expectations kinda low or stay in the DSR. Upstream with the big crowds enjoy the show goin on around you as much as that occasional taker. Also use something that the Hos and Steel will like too- can make some days with all 3 on your list. Just one hackers opinion - lol. BTW- Hos can be different.

rt i caught over 75 kings last year on spawn sacks, all up river, all on circle hooks, and all hooked INSIDE the mouth....they will bite if people would just fish for them.....ive even caught them on a float rig just to see it could be done my two cents...the people who want ot use the old line "they won't bite so you have to snag them" are just trying very hard to justify their illegal and unethical actions...but to each his own btw...was up this week end got two nice browns in the tressle pool, two nice browns and a king on the lake....its coming :)

Nice-- couldint catch 75 if I was snaggin- LOL Have also kinda settled in on the sacs as the season goes on up there. use blue but now and then the orange has its days. That old Snagem line was kinda my point- Bite decent early then its WORK- but the job can be done. Some days its hard to get away from the crowd to do it though.

When the old "do they bite or don't they" debate comes you know its getting close. All I know is many years ago I was "bitten" by the fall runs and those bite wounds still bleed.

Some days its kinada funny -or sick depending on your outlook. Ya see the double line of snaggers flailing away at every fish running up- and one guy who knows the deal off to the side someplace with his fly rod working a little seam or undercut hookin up every now and then right in the mouth.

I'll second what bigbear said.I catch lots of salmon in the mouth up river using streamers, large nympths, glo bugs, estaz flies, etc. These are wild fish that spend most of their lives in a large body of water. When they enter the river the fisherman come after them and wade in on top of them, throw hunks of weight attached to rope like line, slash away at them, and even chase them up and down the river.Even bluegills would not hit a bait if you used those tactics on them.Treat them as wild fish, wade when only necessary, get a proper drift with as little weight as possible, use floracarbon tippet no heavier than 10#,your luck will change.A final note, have many color flies/lures sometimes it's the most important thing as they can really hone in on a color for whatever reason.

My Bride of the past 43 years just gave me a Swamp People tee shirt, hat and coffee mug for my Birthday. No C&R here think this one may be a keeper.

Read on the "other site" that a king was caught this morning off the Port Ontario pier and that a school of sharks were marked in the bay. They are running on the canadian side. DSR reports no activity for today.

There have been a few boats and a number of people fishing around the end of the piers on the Genesee. The weather and the plants say it is already early September, so I woudl figure you've got a chance any day down low, and especially if it rains now. But you can have all those mudsharks you can carry out! See you in October! L13
