when ???

OK- so its the 4th of July and I'm sittin here at the putor stead of out having our annual big picnic around the pool. The kids and grandkids are all off someplace else and for the first 4th in over 40 years Carol and I have it all to ourselves. GOOD. Golf and a Bar B Q just for us.
My pea brain however is wandering to the SR. Next week we go up for a week or so for more golf and campfires. Retired life is so predictable lol.
Oh Well-- the crux of my post is wondering when it will be in the next few weeks that the first King reports begin. There always seems to be somebody who sees some in late July into very early August-THE SEASON IS SHORTLY UPON US.  Good!!!
Kinda wonder bout the earliest any regulars have ever found them in the river ??? for me its generally been mid to late August -here and there. Kinda figure down in DSR they may run in and our even earlier on occasion ???

RT since I'm a retired old goat and visiting my daughter in Ohio I too have some free time to glance at the puter:) All the youngsters are probably doing the family thing today.
As far as when the Salmon make their appearance it's as you say, scattered fish until First week of Sept, then some runs the first week or so,about the end of second week they will start running, then about third week it's fish on!Of course this all depends on the water flow.

Thats pretty much my experience  as well-  mother nature gets involved with  stuff that has made the runs begin  early or late due to water levels and temps but generally thats  it.
Sometimes we even have surprise stuff like the early large run of Hos last year. Great for those who were there for it. Most of us over at Andys for the gathering were very surprised when his brother and folks came in with the report of that big run.
Then again back in the one trip a year days have been nearly skunked in mid Sept. The runs were really diminished for a while back then.
Kinda  start on the lower river  late July into August looking and casting. Now and then get a real sooprize with an early sighting or hookup.
Some fish are eager beavers and  start before all the others. Not very many but enough to keep one walking the river. Not enough action for anybody who only gets one or two trips a year but just enough to perk ones interest.
Not talkin DSR here cause they seem to run in and outa there kinda early giving a very different view of things. Have seen pods run up through there only to run back down a couple of hours later. Talking bout lower and mid river
I also like sitting outside nights waiting for  UFO sightings.

Well rt & pa, I am enjoying independence day at a private lake with about 50 family & friends today. My nephew just got back froml a 3 day lake Ontario trolling trip with no clue about fishing. Over 20 fish in all trout species boated in 250>300 ' around 120' down.
The fish are there . We are taking the boat up mid aug. At that time I'll fish the lake for trout/salmon and play for critters in the estuary.
First river trout/salmon for me would be after the labor day release - weather/ flow dependent . Unlike last years non release. But all heck broke loose a week later :)

Heck I am surprised there are not troves of people up to the trestle after I posted I caught 2 small juvy kings last week.   Heck, I remember one  August when I was a kid getting into fish in Pineville in 85 degree weather

I will be fishing the river on the weekend of aug. 5th during the dam release.... will also try to wet the line this weekend during the 750 dam release. I know many frown upon warm water temp fishing, but in all honesty ive caught kings in 70 degree water temps and managed to keep them alive on the stringer for hours until it was time to go.... tuna, definitely wanna catchya for your estuary outing. Maybe we can swing another spot or two if all works welll...

    HAPPY FOURTH BOYS...

There always seems to be a nice run of fish the week following Labor Day.  The water release from the reservoir helps facilitate fish moving upriver from the estuary.  I was in town for the Summerfest and a couple of days after.  Fished Pineville and Sportsmen, stopped to watch the show, which was already in full swing, at the Trestle Pool.  Although snagging was banned in the early ninties you would have never know it from what was going on.  I'd rather take my chances by fishing early than to watch the carnival during peak season.  To each his own.
