6/27/12
So I went up tonight and took the5 wt fly rod. Fished for 2 hours from 6 to 8 Alternated every 1/2 hour throwing worms on a size 8 hook and throwing some flies. Here are the results 2 bass at 12 to 14inches and 4 others ranging from fitting in the palm of my hand to about 10 inches all caught on the worms. I caught a shiner on a red tailed skunk and had a nice hit on the skunk, but missed it. I also had a nice hit on a little rainbow trout streamer, but missed that too. I felt I had more control of the worm drift when using the fly rod than a spinning rod as I could see the line. Just had some trouble setting the hook and missed a few. MAN those bigger fish felt HUGE on the 5 weight and it was fun catching them. That's all for now Clint PS my boat is home and the hitch is on so some perch fishing may be soon

Clint, that is one reason I hardly pick up a spin outfit any more, the fight is way better with a fly rod.Heck,I'm old enough to remember when there was no spin gear LOL. Are you hearing anything about Skamanie (summer steel) or Atlantics being seen or caught? If they're coming they should be showing up by now. At any rate it's only 8 wks or so before it starts!

PA I really have not talked to anyone and I am going up to relax and catch some fish so I really have not targeted anything but bass and shiners. I have some time off in 2 weeks and may go to the UFZ and see what is going on though. Dime I have caught 5 or 6 bass up there that were 3 or 4 inches long and I see a TON of them swimming around. I noticed a lot of those ultra tiny ones also. Thats why i use a 4-6" bait ;) Clint you didnt miss much this past weekend with the UFZ... i shouldve taken a pic of the parking lot when i drove by on sunday to add to my pic thread... Probably around 30 cars... what a friggin joke. Seems like a status thing has formed up there for the dam release weekends... you wont find me there on dam release weekends... no need to time your drifts with other guys on a summer weekend

30 cars on the UFZ? They either know something or have nothing better to do.I wonder how many are local,50 mile radius,or drove a long ways to fish? At any rate I won't be there until Sept.,and that is getting closer every day.

Clint , an ultra lite rod is a blast on any fish. Way to go for all around general fishing. Charlie is right too . The more you use the fly , the better you'll become . I still suck ..
As for UFZ : I'd have to think some sort of work was going on with 30 cars . That would be like April-1 , and even then.. It's to hot , leave the cold water fish be for awhile unless harvesting them..

PA, this past weekend was the first scheduled dam release for the summer. Both saturday and sunday were bumped up to 400. In the past there would usually be 10 cars at most... in recent years its kinda gotten exploited. I really dont see any sense in it though. I would feel more confident fishing the staircase on up to mid river when they bump the water in the summer. Cant really see any fish bolting that fast to the UFZ. I have known some people who were nuch further than 50 miles head up for it. It was quite a site though. Spey nation is in 2 weeks and i believe there is going to be a 750 release then. Probably gonna be quite a few people around that weekend. Makes one wonder, how crowded will the river be if the summer runs actually take off in decent numbers????since its already packed up with no fish....lol

Geoff (Shaq) puts on a great spread with the Spey thing if your into that.. Even still if one is around , they, do a heck of a Job, first class and 100% worth the time to meet and learn.. If you see Geoff tell him RJ said hello, see ya soon.. Again as for UFZ, kinda crazy to me.. I'll take it in the fall...

That's crazy 30 cars. I would not even have turned in there and went back to the trestle. That' s a nice deep pool and I got just as much of a chance there as any for a summer run. I go in the summer to relax not to fight the crowds. I'm with you HT I will leave the crowd fightin till the fall.

Yeah clint, both parking areas were jammed with even some parking on the road. I only drove by while heading to fish somewhere else.

Not trying to hijack here but don't these guys pay any attention to water temperature. If your targeting anything but bass you need to rethink your priorities.
