Both fine rifles. Better is very subjective.
Unless you are into names, I would buy whichever feels right when you shoulder it. Find them both and check them out in person to see which one fits you right.
Ruger has the new Hawkeye model with improved trigger. If you buy a ruger find a Hawkeye model. The triggers in the older Rugers suck.
Brownings are fine guns with a very short bolt throw which is a nice feature. I personally like the feel of the Brownings when I shoulder them.

I have a Ruger M77 in .280 remington and a Browning A bolt in .22-250. Both are fine firearms. Both are Walnut with Blue steel. While both guns shoot terrific. I have to say the the Browning has a better trigger, better fit and finish, and a smoother action all together.

Also FYI, Browning will be releasing a new bolt gun in 2008 called the X-Bolt. If you are considering the Browning you might want to wait to check it out when they are made available.

I recently harvested a deer with a Browning A-Bolt in 25WSM. It was lent to me when I had scope problems. I liked the way it felt and really liked the way the clip attached to the floor plate. Hit exactly where I aimed at 149 long paces, the first time I ever fired the gun. At one time I had a Ruger 77 in 7x57 that never really impresed me. If I were still a bolt man, I would certainly would consider the A-Bolt. I would also look at the TC Icon, the Tika T-3 Lite and the Remington 700.w_w.

I've never shot the browning, but I shot the ruger in 3 different calibers. I must say, the rugers I shot were consistantly accurate, but the triggers sucked.
I feel the best bolt action out there is the Remington 700.

The T/C Icon looks like an awesome bolt action. Ive been reading on the Ballistics of the New .30 T/C cartridge jointly developed between TC and Hornady just for this gun. It is truely awesome as well. the are pushing 150 grain 30 calliber bullets at 3000 fps with 15% less recoil than a 30-06 are doing it with a short action. Alot of development went into this cartridge. Im sure its not cheap to buy. Has any one priced the ICON yet. Im just curious as to the price in the shops.

MSRP on the gun tested in the article I read was $1035 I think. No cheap date, but what is anymore. I'm looking at an Encore Pro Hunter. With a little customizing, I'll be spending at least that much.w_w.

Looked long and hard at an A-Bolt...i bought the 700 Rem in .270 but kind of regret not just getting the browning for the extra $125. Browning is a nice looking fire arm and finished well and i dont think youll find much of a difference in how either gun shoots in a certain caliber as much as one looks. Ruger M77 is like $570 but includes the scope rings. Browning A-Bolt is like 600-750 depending on which model you want.
The Model 700 is like your middle of the road firearm. It does its job and does it well. So far i got 2 shots and 2 kills through mine.
If i ever have a son ill be sure to pass down the rem 700 in 270 so i can get an A-Bolt Medallion in .270.

I had a Ruger 77 ultra light in 30-06. Wouldn't recommend this rifle (unless you enjoy pain). It was the hardest kicking rifle i've ever shot, to light at 6 lbs. After the first shot, you expect to have your shoulder dislocated and flinch. I'm 6'2" and 280 lbs and felt like a wuss with this gun.

The A bolt will have a better trigger than the 77, unless Ruger has made serious changes. By the time you replace the trigger on a 77, you as well get something else.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong

I like the Ruger.
The stock and lengh of pull is a good fit for me.
See what fits you best.
I also like the Remington 700 but add an adjustable stock and a Rifle Basics trigger.
You can usually sell the factory trigger or BDL stock for about what you pay for a custom one.
