dreaded soft spot on the floor

My cover failed me, and ended up puddling and letting water in. Now, there is a pretty soft spot on the floor. Guessing it will need a floor replacement. Doing a little research, I saw a mention of using cement fiber board for floor boards, instead of marine grade plywood. Has anyone ever used this? I thought this stuff needed a subfloor to go over top.

I was debating compsite decking. Anyone happen to know if, or where, you can get sheets of the material?

If it's the same cement board you use to lay tile on, I've installed a ton of that stuff,

    YES...it needs backed.

Something else to consider, that stuff is HEAVY.

Another ideas I have had success with is regular 1/2" or 5/8" plywood....When cut to fit coat with fiberglass resin (all surfaces and sides. Very light compared to other material and 100% waterproof. Get everything at a big box store. I have had scraps of coated plywood outside for years and still in perfect condition. Just a thought.

Thanks guys. When you coat with resin, do you just paint on the resin with a paint brush? Does it need the cloth too?

I'm thinking to paint instead of carpet too. Not sure yet though. Just shopping for ideas. It's not going to be fun...

You don't need to use the cloth. IMO, paint would be slippery. How about having it Rhino-lined after u replace it. Give thoughts to marine vinyl too. I rebuilt a Sea Nymph and used vinyl on tthe floor. Instead of carpet. It was quite nice.

I saw the vinyl and like it. I'm guessing the fiberglass dries smooth enough for the vinyl to look good?

I was thinking paint with some sort of texturized floor paint for traction, but guessing the vinyl would last longer. It would be nice to be able to hose clean the boat like the charter rigs do.

Would 1/2 be thick enough? That would be a nice reduction in weight.

I'd stick with Marine grade plywood and give it several coats of CPES (clear penetrating epoxy sealer) then either paint, carpet or put vinly on the surface. I don't think 1/2" would be thick enough to keep from giving when you walk on it. Check out www.jamestowndistributors.com good supplier and great technical support. I'm assuming this is an aluminum boat?

    Yeah, aluminum.

I thought marine grade wouldn't need additional sealant. That sucks...

3/4" - AC fir would also work. We replaced the floor in our aluminum Starcraft and used it. After reading several posts on other boards, found out that fir is "naturally rot resistant".

We coated the new flooring with glass resin before install, making sure to get the edges coated really well. (Apply after you get all of the cuts made.)
Then we covered it all with the roll/brush on Duraliner bed coating.
It turned out pretty good and is very slip/skid resistant to boot!

The only real difference is the glue that's used on Marine grade, the wood will still take on water. The CPES is easy to work with, and you may even catch a buzz... Cut the wood before you seal it and pay special attention to the edges. It all depends on how long you're going to keep the boat. You could probably just put regular plywood in and paint the top side and it will last for several years...
