3/22/12 I was quite sick today

I had steel fever and there is only one cure. With the water staying high in the river and dropping fast everywhere else I had to get, getting while the getting was good. Went up North and got a flat tire just as I was pulling into the PACKED parking lot. Changed the tire and said what the hell and went down. The best thing was that almost everyone there was from out of town and was fishing in the wrong spots and casting over the fish. I actually got a prime spot with alot of room. Went 2 for 3 on blue egg sacs. They were cookie cutter fish, but my fever was broke and I was feeling much better (aside from the flat). Left around lunch stopped at BK and hit off river in the woods. I saw several small ones and had one take there. There were snaggers at each spot, but closer to home there were 3 guys that were literally chasing them up and down the rapids and ripping away. So I set up right in the middle of them for a while just sitting there staring. I did leave a note on their windshield, saying I hoped they had fun snagging and I took video of them on my phone and called the DEC tip line and gave their plate # (which I didn't, but I am sure they will sweat for a while. )

On to the Hatchery and get there just when it was closing up. They were taking eggs today and there were many fish in the ladder and very few in the holding ponds. I asked why and they said they are only anesthetizing the fish they want to examine and the rest are free to go as soon as the eggs are taken. He said only 10 to 15% are in the ponds.

On to Redfield to check the res. It is up considerably from the last time, but still like 4 or 5 feet from usual spring levels.

I have pics of the fish and the bridge at the res I will post up later.
Clint

I am not familiar with the glass hole. PM me with the details of where it is. I did talk with an old time up there and said it was dropping a foot a day over the last few days and was surprised fish had stayed up this long.

Oh yeah, just looked and whatever punctured my tire as so big it went through the backside of my rim. This may have been a very expensive sick day.

2 males 1 had a nasty wound on it's side. On one I took 2 #10 hooks out of it's mouth (other than mine) so I assume he will not win the smartest fish in the world contest. They were not spawnwed out yet, but milked easily with a little squeeze. I would have kept one for dinner if it was a female as I am running low on eggs.

I think it is an 8 in egg yolk color. I said what the heck and pinned one above the sack as they are very close in color to a king egg. Blue egg sacs were good for me, a guy right up from me was doing well on chartreuse sacs. Yes, Dime I was up there and so was 1/2 of Tri state area. With the water at 1800 and possibly higher due to rain it will be swamped this weekend.

May have missed something- Is Salmo gone? -would not be pleased bout that.
As far a letting boyz be boyz goes you havent seen anything til ya browse some other forums a bit so that cant be it. Some seem to actually HUNT each other--or even everyone..
Beyond that I too get sick of some of the boys bein boyz chit chat just like most everyone else.
That comes with open forums though- good with the bad sometimes. Some folks  just seem to go too far and always need a good spanking.
Too bad- this is supposed to be bout fishin with a bit of decent humor thrown in and perhaps a bit of ribbing now and again.
Not a place for personal gettin over insults and similar banter.
Like the guy says 'couldnt get away with that on the street'.
Now I'll probably get busted too.

Slayer been posting there since last august unlike you who just lurks.

In all honesty, if you and drake are going to be around this weekend maybe we should meet up. And this is not a tough guy gesture like drakes threats of beating me up via pm. Its just funny how people can make such assumptions about others through a keyboard and computer screen. You may be surprised at what the truth actually holds. And I would be pretty shocked if either of you would say even half of the crap you do here in person. So what do you say???will we see what the truth really holds this weekend? Maybe id even be inclined to buy a round of cold ones since im a high roller and my daddy pays my rent

Hi Clint! Great pics and story... wondering what size your eggs were? I have some imitation blue eggs that are 6mm that I tie on a stonefly pattern (Steak and eggs). Are those too small? Thanks.

Pete, I drove up this weekend and talked to a few guys, but did not fish. 1800 is way too much for me as well as family in from out of town. You did not miss much.

Trout man as far as the eggs the bead was probably a 6mm. The Eggs in the sack were king eggs that were just about the same size maybe a bit bigger than the bead. I would say with pretty good certainty that the fish hit the egg sacks not the bead. As others around me were all hooking up on sacks too.

Well they did admittedly hook more w/ more weight--to counteract the wind of course---and fouled some to boot.

Bout half the time I walk those tribs I dont even take a rod- I LOVE those little places. They are why I bought a place up there.
That said it aint nobody elses business  why or how I go there.
However if ya really want a test of fishing patience. Go to one and see some fish- They will spook immediately- THEN ya gotta go up and wait them out for a while- Sometimes bout an hour- an then try and fish -very quietly with NO weight -down to them without spooking them again-
Its great  but doesnt work most of the time- when it does 9 outa 10 times they make a fast  run and bust ya off on sometin like a log or bend in the creek or brush etc etc---
If ya land one in 10 its a lot. The best release feeling there is is to watch one of them swim off after all that work.
Doin it right in those places aint for everybody but its a HOOT----
Stream fulla snaggers and herders can wreck the day in there though an its gettin more and more commonplace
BTW---  Fished Trout once bout 20 yrs ago- once was enough----

I can't believe that you can't tell that this is one and the same. If he walks like a male duck, talks like a male duck, quacks like a male duck..... well, he must be a Drake!

I agree with the general sense that DT is way over the limits of what is reasonable, but a little anger may be excusable considering the coup d'tat pulled on the moderator, and the unceramonius banning of "radical elements." I'll disagree with what you say all day, but still defend your right to say it. And as they say about TV, if you don't like what is playing, it is easy to change the channel, or skip that post. Back when Griz was moderator at least one of the "gang of four", or however many got Slammo dumped and Drake and WB banned, was skating on thin ice himself with the board, but was not ejected. Tolerence is a two way street.
Finally, some anglers are just out to "get a rise", so if you slam back, well, it's mission accomplished, but if there is no response, as has been the case for a few of the revolutionaries, well maybe that is what infuriates more.

Good luck on the streams and the ponds as the SR is going to fade away pretty quickly soon until fall!

L13, the salmon doesnt fade till temps hit mid 70s. The chrome may leave but there is great smallie action and atlantics, and scamania. I even get the 5 weight out and cast dries till it goes to low and gets to warm.

If I lived there, I would do likewise, but the rate of return doesn't justify the travel costs for me with things happening closer to home,or, if I do get a chance to travel, there are also a lot of other opportunities like brookies up that way that tend to distract me. And I can't get away in July and August when I could play with Skams or Atlantics in the early hours, due to the job.

Hey I make a year of it on the SR - Smallies and Atlantics in the Summer- both with the 5 wt too. The Atlantics however are few and far between as far as my cathin goes but its great to see them.

I live 10 minutes by car and 10 by foot from the Genesee and could fish Smallmouths there, but my job requires 24-7 call in the summer, so I don't even get there much. Another year, maybe 2, and I'll be Retired Guy II, and unless gas goes to $6 a gallon, I'll get up north more often.

Smallies are awesome in the summer. I've yet to put tremendous effort towards summer run salmon and steel, but don't really frown on anyone who does. If/when I get the time i will give them a shot. I think I would use a heavier rod than a #5 weight though to allow quicker retrieval when hooking one.
