Gas vs. Fishing ??

With gas going to $4 or $5 a gal.
How much will that cut into your fishing?

The lakes I like to fish are 36 miles/60 miles round trip.
I just may have to fish closer to home.
I've got one "bad" habit and that's fishing.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Not much here, either...I'll just have to make more weekend trips to get more bang for my petro peso.

I'll have to cut down on the trips to Pymy with the boat.
$35 in gas a trip sucks....

It won't cut into the amount,it has already cut the distance. It used to be more fun exploring when I wasn't as concerned about how much gas I was using.I can def. notice that there are fewer guys out where-ever I go.There were days when I would drive to RT.422 & flip a coin to see if I should go west to Arthur or East to Yellow Creek Lake for Northerns, Now I don't have a coin to flip. lol sam

It won't change anything for me. I'm only a 3 min ride to orchard launch on Pymy and can run the boat all day trolling on half a tank, or pull up to a spot and drop the electric motor and bass fish. Plus the pontoon stays on the lake all summer and we only go through a 1-1 1/2 tanks of gas on it a year. It'll be interesting to see how many less people come up fishing Pymy this year.

The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

If I could ever consistentley get people to go out on Lake Erie and help split my fuel cost I'd be going alot more! 120 miles each way or 240 miles round trip towing a heavy 19ft boat puts a sting in the wallet, especially when you're getting between 10/11 miles a gallon. Not to mention 8-10 gallons of gas in the boat probably at a minimum. So it cost me about 30 gallons of gas each trip to Lake Erie, which is between $105-130 just for fuel...

My saving grace is that I live about 2 miles from the lower Allegheny, which is where I spend most of my time in the off seasons of Lake Erie. I never do so well with walleyes on the lakes around here-Keystone Power Dam, Lake Arthur, and others. I can always get plenty of bass, crappie, and catfish--but walleyes not so much. Pymy is about a 2 hour drive for me, so usually if i get the urge to go there-I just tell myself Erie is only another 30 minutes down the road, so why waste my time on Pymy. Just my 2 cents...

We get one of these threads every spring, gas never hits $5/gal, fishing pressure at various popular (and not popular) places is never affected by it.

My prediction: just like the past few years, gas will go to about $4.35-$4.50 and people will still keep driving & fishing just like always...they'll just b!+ch and moan about gas more.

My civic gets over 40mpg. So shore fishing is no problem for me. But may cut down on a couple Erie smallie trips.

$90 gas in truck $60 in boat for 2 day trip to chataqua in new york,to fish for muskies and gas prices going up just means less $ for me to feed and quench my thirst. i will still go to fill my thirst for the chance to catch a fish that will eat your fish..

Still going to make my yearly trip south to Ky lake. Couple years ago, it cost me more for gas, down and back, than it did to stay there in the motel for a week.

( my fish eats your fish for breakfast) that gave me a chuckle.one day while fishing the Mon.city wharf I saw 2 young kids fishing, the PFC must have just stocked Musky fingerlings. 1 of the kids caught a approx.6-7" fingerling & before I could stop him,his buddy stuck it on his hook for bait & cast it out. within 30 seconds a nice sized bass snatched it off of the surface & it was gone. After I explained that that was illeagel, they informed me that they did that all of the time. I guess that is "eat or be eaten" sam

At 14 MPG, I won't venture very far. Trouble is,I'm about an hour and a half drive away from any decent trout water, once pellet season comes to an end. Yea I know, trade my truck for something that gets better mileage. Thing is, I'm kinda on the big side and don't like trying to squeeze in and out of smaller vehicles, nor do I like my head touching the headliner.

All I have to do is mount a hitch on my VW bug so I can pull my 6,000# combo to Erie...

Diesel is already over $4 and I have a 100 trip, one way, to Erie. I'm sure it will cut down on my trips... oughta make the wife happy tho...

Might just have to spend more time with the "Snagrz" in the bay...

Its going to affect me big time!! Im 95 miles from pyma and 65 to shenango.I waited all my life to retire and fish alot now the magic day arrives and gas is going to put the kabosh on alot of those trips. Its a shame though it doesnt have to be that high were getting our annual goughing like always and alas I thought it was cause we had a oil Guy running the show sending all the profits to his buddies in oil industry!!!
Argue all you want but i will take that dumb oil guy any day over hope and change any day!! now there no hope and only bad change!!!!!!

i have quit complaining about it. Prices are not going to change and that is something we have to get used to. I dont even look at the price anymore cause i know it will make me angry. As far as trips it will cut down on my pymi and erie trips, but i will just fish the allegheny or ohio.

Take a buddy or two on the long trips and split the cost of gas will be my motto. I will also fish closer to home with more regularity(Mon River). Yes I will B---- and Moan but I'll still go fishing. Quite a variety of fish in the Mon from carp and cats to Eyes, Bass and Musky. Have even caught a stray trout there.

I wont be fishing moraine/pymy as much as id like from my boat. Still a cheap trip taking my moms car and wading from shore. I will be fishing downtown pittsburgh a lot more this summer from shore. Ill cut as many costs as I can in other areas before I stop fishing erie every weekend. The gas doesnt anger me as much as the 'reliability' of some of my fishing buddies

I am not letting the cost of gas cut into my fishing.  I'll make budget cuts elsewhere to keep gas in the truck and the boat running.  It cost over $100 to fill the truck up as it stands now with gas at 3.70/gal.

The oil companies screwing all of us is getting old.  They will use any excuse they can think of to raise the price per barrel (storms, middle east unrest, plant safety shutdowns, general need for more money, east wind, ect...)  The bottom line is no one political leader is to blame for the out of control pump prices.  Greed from BIG OIL is to blame.

Musky, all other fish are just bait!
