I talked with a hunter yesterday, the last day of the pheasant season, which had seven pheasants up on the game lands here in Elk County during an afternoon hunt. He does have a pretty good dog though.

I am also sure the open winter is helping to hold birds in the better maintained small game habitats of that section of the game lands. If we were having a winter with deep snows many of those birds would likely have moved down into the valleys where there are houses and bird feeders.

Or into the Breechnuts with the grouse! The pheasant program is a real waste of money, years ago when I had English setters I had a deputy warden buddy that love to shoot birds he also had a dog. We would stock birds at his 5-6 (spots) every year.My guess is about 1/2 the birds got killed the first night. Why they like to stock them minutes before dark,I never got that(only reason I could came up with SO HUNTERS DIDN'T KILL THEM.Even with GREAT DOGS they dissapear.Years ago I had many spots that had wild birds,it been a while since I've seen a mamma hen with a brood of little ones.

in my neck of the woods - specifically SGL 91 - the hawks & yotes do a number on them - especially the dumb ones that just flew out of the box. Easy meal..

I applaud both the PGC & Pheasants-Forever for keeping my dogs well-fed and happy...

Same here too. On the first day, We hunted the game lands and we saw piles of feathers everywhere. I'm guessing that's what happened.

In my section of 1A, the game commission is trying a new program of having the sportsman clubs buy and raise pheasant chicks, then release them on game lands in hopes of raising the numbers. The only problem is that they did something similar about 15 years ago when they closed down the season for 10-15 years to introduce the ring less type birds into the woods in an attempt to raise the numbers, so they can survive on their own-It failed miserably!!!
