Jan 19-20-21

Got up bout 3:30 PM Thursday stopped by Kiddie pool and only one guy was there and he hooked up a jumper just as I parked. All I had to see so went up to my frozen place and warmed it up- took  a few hours. Single digit nights and mid teen days Thurs Fri and Sat.
Snowed an inch or two over three days but generally nice weather- but cold. The trip was more for mind clearing than fishing but got out later AM on   Friday and had to go back for Drenan after my crap Cabelas leader broke at the knot  all too often. For 8 lb leader it was VERY weak too. Drenan was just fine with the same knots too.
LOVIN that switch rod- no iced eyes cause ya roll constantly. Gets right out there too.
VERY light pressure up river and none at all down. Only one or two cars per lot and some with none at all.
Sat was different with the Zone lot pretty full - light in most all the other lots though. Water was supposed to be 900 but looked higher till today ( sat) when it began to drop.
The flats look frozen over and saw a bit of slush in town early  today but generally open water with little if any shelf ice yet.
Only one half hearted tug for me with limited time on the river actually fishing but saw some others hooked up on primarily dark fish of medium to small sizes.
Was watching the guys in the Kiddie later Friday and one IDIOT decided the water by the bridge was just the place to relieve himself.--comonnnn dumb butt at least get a few feet from the water. --try a nearby tree or behind a car at least. Was a flyguy too. Took all his gear off and left it on the ramp and then went back in the river and walked over to the bridge.
If I had a camera he would be on facebook.
bugged bout noon today--Good trip --cept for that idiot

That's what those big rocks at the back of the lot are for, RT. They're  a  Port-a-Fred. As in Flintstone.    Simms now makes a lower grade wader with a zipper. 3-400 range. Great reviews from guides that gave them some poundings. Alot of the Cabelas flyfishing stuff is crap. You gotta sort through it. Pretty good deals if you're out chasing the elusive , hard fighting, sunfish, or stocked 7" trout. Rods, reels, clothing, seem to be OK, smaller stuff not so much. Thanks for the report. Next weekend for me, I think.

RT , thanks for the report. The water levels do seem to be different this year? Comparing the pineville gauge to the release level is not matching up as in previous years, and the release level numbers are different 300,500,750,900 it seemed in the past the numbers were not rounded used to get 335,485, 535 stuff like that?
I think I am heading back up this week.

I never had any problems with either Cabela's or Hodgeman waders, maybe cause us pinners can just float by all those steep banks filled with thorn bushes

As far as zipper, my pink worm can reach over the curb just fine, your mileage may vary.

I'm too nice a guy, HT. I had a freind now passed that had  diabetes and  his hands were racked with pain. It helped to keep them warm, so I gave him my Joka-Therm mittens. They are a fleece mitten, inside a large rubber  non-slip overmitten. They go on and off in a heartbeat and are incredibly warm. They were designed for fisherman in the North Sea.  Kinda hard to get, I got them from a friend that had a baitshop on Champlain. He's gone, too. Try to be nice, and people up and die on you anyway.

http://www.chssnowmakers.com/Joka%20Gloves.htm  This seems to be the only supplier in the US. I guess stuff made in Finland doesn't have the same mark-up potential as China.

My fingers froze (until shanty & heat) the last 2 days.. To the point of frost bit..
Looking towards new Mittens for ice and a good glove for open water.. Simms look nice..

I guess you didn't like my suggestion. That's alright, I ordered a pair for myself.   Fleece fingerless gloves with the mitten pullovers work great for me in open water  , I use them ice fishing, but they're not as good as the Joka-Therms. EMS sells good ones. They still work when wet, Simms has a similar product for a few more bucks.

Trevor, glad to hear you're enjoying the switch rod and also enjoyed some time off from your busy schedule .... ive been up 3 weekends in a row myself but haven't had a chance to wet the line other than new years weekend when I met up with 3 fan.... probably heading up again this Thursday. Maybe i'll get some time on the water then. If anyone else will be around give me a hollar ...

Tuna, there's a brand of gloves that are a thin blue capilene material. They work great under fingerless or full fingered gloves as a nice insulating base layer over your hands.

Also looking forward to spring time pike with you and fichy

I was in the mind set a few years back never to own a cell phone.. Now I don't own a land line..
Last year I said no way do I need a smart phone.. Well after having to borrow a co-workers for the last year for union biz, I do..

Charlie, the transducer may be a stretch but my friends speedometer stopped working.. guess what ? there was an app and the smart phone became his speedometer for that trip..

Still, It will never take the place of being in the outdoors,, not yet anyway..lol

That bomb would have dropped even harder, had you not started picking up the pieces right away, Bro. Like us  getting the call about Nancy's sister being near death, sometimes that silly one bar of reception makes a difference in people's lives. I got the cellphone so we could travel and my Mom can still contact me. She's on her own and in her mid 90's. We're all she has. So I carry the phone. One day last winter we had to leave the river  to rush back and get her to the hospital.  I have to arrange for people to check on her  when we backpack. The option is to never go anywhere because you can't risk going. I'd rather go and leave early than never go at all. Lots of people rely on you, HT. That's more a blessing than a curse.

Do those gloves breathe at all?

Reason I ask - several years ago I bought a $50 pr of SharkSkin gloves that go high up above your wrist. I figured they would be the ticket for hand-dunkin. They were made of a neoprene like material.

    Finger dexterity sucked.
Hands sweated and moisture was trapped - hands froze.

I have not used them since..

In case you post a pic of a top-secret fishing spot, beware the gps coords that the smart phones (and even newer digital cameras) attach to the photo. All someone has to do is click properties and they have the long/lat coordinates.

There should be a setting to turn that feature off.

Sadly my thrill for the great lakes fish has slowed.. Thousands of fish later.. Yes I can safely say thousands.. It will never cease but has slowed way down..
Good for you my friend. I'm sure you will do well, lets see some pic's over 10# this time.. LOL.. Land those beasts !

Hey Tuna- That slowin down thing is kinda perceptual IMHO-back in the day would push to get a 3 fish limit. GO GO GO
Now ---one good fight and sit back light the pipe and watch the show-- just a different place to be-----------more relaxed and appreciative---actually kinda nice too--------

I've been waiting on a bigarse Blizzard - by the looks of things it may never happen.
Besides that, I am busier than busy with work right now. I even picked up a few bigger clients (I try to avoid them cause they are sometimes a major PIA) - but the Ching is Mucho.. Gotta make hay when the hay-makin is good.

But another reason, to be honest with you - is that my Great Lakes/SR passion has faded a great deal. I have not caught thousands of fish like you, but my eyes hae watched the decline of the quality of the fishery (I know most folks think going 27 for 45 are great stats), but I call BS on all dat - along with the crowds of nitwits that go along with it.

Call me Crazy - but I truly enjoy fishing in adverse conditions when 0-2 or hopefully 1 for 2 makes a great day. I miss the "old days" when only a couple other nuts were ballz-deep in icewater and dressed like the Unibomber - b4 the stylish wading jackets came in vogue

p.s. I do miss "chillin" in front of the woodstove with Mr. JD and corrupting the morals of snowmobile chickies at the Kaseog Bar.

It might happen again in February...

THINK SNOW - LOTS OF IT

RT I kinda see that but I'm more on drake's view.. I still get a go,go on the ice and in the ADK's.. Just something about the surroundings that keep me going.. The fish then are the bonus..

    Understand Tuna and Drake both--
For years it was out on the boat in the Salt Water--Sr was a once or maybe twice a year nice distraction-- time passed- the boats gone and now I have  place by the SR=
For years raised good bird dogs and hunted Pheasants,  hard---Deer hunting was an occasional pastime- now down to one lab for a pet and havent shot a pheasant in years and years and hunt deer like a madman.
Lots to do out there and not enough time to do it all--at least not well------------
A day will come when ya say 'OK' lots more trips behind me than ahead and I think I'll sit back and get the most out of those yet to come- and the size or amount of your harvest will have little or nothing to do with the enjoyment factor--
Drake- unfortunately someday that Snowbunny thing will not be so important either-- just the warm fire-bunnys will just be too much trouble and not worth leavin the fire for---- then ya die
