Good News ====

If you remember I had posted pictures and talked of a deer with a "goofy" right ear that I had nicknamed "goofy". I was hoping to harvest her this year, but that was not in the cards.
I had not seen her or her triplets since the first week of rifle season when they all walked by at 8:20 am...

Well.. good news.. all 4 made it through the hunting season.

I set out the feeder box yesterday and cleared a few areas for placing corn starting today (Sunday) I set up the trail camera and low and behold look who showed up.. "goofy" and her three fawns...

BUT === check out the time..3am !!!!

    BTW ===

    More good news...

    I am not sure how many remember the photos of a deer I named "tuff" from three years ago. That has showed up every year .. The hair on her neck for some reason always stands up.... Last week when I was in the blind with no crossbow her and two others came by.. so I know she and her family made it thru the deer season also..

    So I can't wait to catch her on the trail camera for year number 4 of feeding here....
    so stay tuned !!

    Here's her picture from this past February (2011)to refersh memories..

    Because there is no corn in the field.. after all it's January ..

    There are still blackberry twigs they eat, a few beechnuts nearby, hemlocks 400 yards away, My three pasture fields still have some green in them, nice brom grass hay that the horse do not eat 100% of,in the paddock acre,. etc, etc,

    the deer just love hanging around here.. they think I'm a COOL dude.

    Hey Doc, with tuff being several years old now, have you seen any off-spring from her? If you dont see any from her this spring, that's the one you should target next year.

    Bloodyhands...

    When "tuff" and the the other two showed up in front of my blind last Saturday there was one "adult" with her.. my guess is last years fawn.. plus there was a fawn from this year and no way of knowing who's fawn it was ....

    That was the first time since last winter/spring I had seen "tuff".. I was afraid she may have been hit by a car or something.. there is usually a dead deer laying on the road at the end of the lane once or twice a month... In fact there are two out there now about 1/4 mile apart..

    In 2009 and 2010 she (tuff)had only one fawn with her... with the 3-4 bucks running around this year and NO bucks harvested at all, it will be interesting to see how "tuff" and "goofy" do this spring with fawns... I'd love to see "goofy" with another set of triplets..

    Doc; Have fed the deer in my area for years and seen some strange sights. One doe had ears that hung down like a hound dog and one had ears; or what was left of them that were shredded as if something had bit them and pulled. Also had a doe with a severely broken leg that had set in an odd angle and she showed up with fawns for a few years. Stopped feeding this year after two different bears showed up with mange. Large one got trapped in my drive way and destroyed. WCO said it was the worse case of hair loss that they had seen. Bare skin except for its head and a streak down the center of its back. Younger one never came back after the large one was removed.

    But just like you if one does show up that will be the end of feeding for me too....

    BTW.. just for the record... it must have been the fact I just put the boxes out Saturday night that drew the deer.in. NOTHING showed up last night !!!!

    Dr. Trout..."tuff" actually has a mane...Like a horse...the buck shown in this picture has one and is the 3rd buck I have taken (all same area) that had one...I hear its quite rare...I have never heard of it untill I had it pointed out to me on a big 8 point that I took 6 years ago...I guess doe(s) have them too...

    Unless I'm missing something...looks like a mane to me...cool man!

      Took a maned Buck here in Ct some time ago that actually had a black mane standing up bout 2 to 3 inches high the entire length of its neck. The mane was stiff as a horses and not scruffy looking at all.
    Although not required at the time took it to the check station/taxidermist shop for  a look see and was advised that although not seen regularly they were not uncommon.

    223cal 55gr love pellet from 175 yds away. One of the two yotes I shot during daylight hours. Otherwise, it's close quarters at night with 12ga #4buck. Pictures of them dead dogs are not family friendly...

    That's not the case here where I live. We have no snow and get this, I saw a farmer out today with a combine loading up two dump trucks with corn from his field. Unreal!!!

    Doc, I enjoyed your stories and the pictures. That's comical you named those deer. I did the same thing when I was in my hunting stand during Archery season.

    You might have to format your card again.
    But you lose your pics on the card.

    another possibility:

    Make sure the size of your card is compatible with the camera.

    I have an older trailcam - it cannot use the new high capacity cards.

    Well this evening I was entertained by 2 gray squirrels and I was right they are what is stealing the whole cob of corn from one of my spots... The interesting part was how they went about it. They sat and chewed off enough kernels off an end so that they then could bite into the cob itself and then drag the whole ear off... there were two of them and they carried off 4 ears of corn.Here is a picture of one as he chews the kernels off before carrying it off....
    Sorry the pictures are a little blurry, but it is not the best camera for taking "zoom" pictures at a distance, plus at my age it looks like I am getting a little shaky..

    And away we go !!!!

    Those two gray squirrels are safe as long as they live from me shooting them.. They are the first gray squirrels I have seen around the house in almost 10 years.... I THINK maybe the three beechnut trees there have drawn them in this year, I'm not sure..

    BUT they are safe from me.. my wife would shoot me if I shot one of them
