I gotta agree with cold on this one. I fished for pellet heads and steel with a 6wt and had no trouble at all. It takes a little more finesse to land a steelie but but worked very well for both. I'd have no trouble recommending a 6wt.

ask cold, dru, loomis, or anyone else I've fished w. on these boards and they will telll you I can put the brakes on steel and throw 22 midges on 6x tippet  with little water disturbance.  I do own a 5 wt and fish it when flows are low for stockies, but when water levels are high like below, you can't throw a section of sink tip and the size of the streamers we were using to catch bigger fish.

these were days people were going fishless and we were throwing chunky flies and whacking fish.  I think we caught 5 different goldens lastt spring in the high flows..

"Most" people can't throw weight in those type of flows that you need to catch fish w. a 4 wt man... and believe me when I say I have no trouble landing steel using side pressure; however, I do attribute that to a strong blank: rx8+

Okay, I am officially impressed.  I will forget what I have learned in 45 years of flyfishing for everything from three inch wild trout to 150 tarpon in the U.S. and around the world and acquiese that since you were able to catch a large glow-in-the-dark mutant stocked trout that a 6-weight is the way to go.  I am sincerely sorry for suggesting otherwise.  It won't happen again.

I never took anything as an attack, so no need to be drugged as you point out.
 
I simply supported my advise with some credentials in much the same way you supported yours.  Mine just happened to be a little broader based than yours, which were based on some photos of a mutant stocked trout.
 
There were no comments to put you down.  If you thought so, I am sorry.  It was not intended that way.  Perhaps a xannie, whatever that is, would help.
 
I disagree that a 6-weight is a great option.  It is a compromise at best that won't suit either situation well, much like trying to play golf with one club.
