Special BOC policy meeting

Release #142-11
Dec. 14, 2011

BOARD OF GAME COMMISSIONERS TO HOLD BRIEF MEETING TO DISCUSS ON POLICY
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners will hold a brief meeting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in the auditorium of the agency’s Harrisburg headquarters at 2001 Elmerton Ave., just off the Progress Avenue exit of Interstate 81 in Harrisburg. This meeting will be focused on discussing Board policy.

Not sure what the hay this is about. Pretty tight lips on this one. It is really wierd that the BOC is being called in the week before Christmas. Very unusual.

Well, could it be they want "policy" changes that equate to more....or less... power for the boc?

Wonder who put together this "manual". Dubrock maybe? Im starting to get a bit queasy.

My guess is this is what is going on. I suspect the BOC is driving it as well.

When they had a similiar meeting in 2003 was when they eliminated the policy of managing deer for (Maximum Sustained Yield) and for (Maximum Hunting Opportunities) and made them a pest to be reduced and controlled under managing from an (Ecosystem Perspective)where each plant and animal is equally important.-----They had their meeting quick and quiet then also.

I'm betting is was a call for the swift eradication of PA's most numerous pest; the whitetail deer.

If you think that call is just being made now, Id say you're a day late and a dollar short. That "call" for "eradication" was made over a decade ago.

All that happened was a formal vote. No idea on the significance of this new "manual", if any. 6 yes, a no from Isabella and a abstention from Schreffler.

I guess the devil is in the details.... Exact wordings in that "manual". I find it interesting that Isabella was opposed, and also the abstention. Guess someone forgot to tell them this was "nothing"?

Why can't an absentee vote anyway ?   It's not as if they don't know what's going down with a particular topic.  Couldn't imagine there are any "surprises."  Is there a requirement that they have to be present to vote ?   If so, they shouldn't be able to vote on a topic unless all are present.   The decisions they make can be a big deal to not only hunters but all residents of the state.

Schreffler was there, and abstained from voting.

Isabella wasnt there due to having to be in court. But voted over the phone.

Isabella gave the reason of; He felt he knew someone that should take a look at the wordings within the policy to prevent possible unforeseen problems with it down the line. The other commissioners werent interested and proceeded to vote, with Isabella then voting NO.

Not sure, but I would guess an absentee vote where a commissioner didnt take part in the meeting at all, wouldnt be acceptable. But thats just my guess, since I havent seen it done. And also it would make sense that maybe something would be said in discussion at the meeting to change ones position on an issue. That is a good question though, and one Id be curious in knowing the answer to as well.

I am paraphrasing here as I don't have it in front of me, but this was one snippit from the new policy manual.

"Commissioners are reminded thet they represent the widlife resources and citizens of this state and are not affiliated with any one constituancy."

Again, not the exact wording but close.
