Where are the Slammers Steelhead

Based solely on interweb research, my findings indicate that very very few large steelhead were landed in the SR during the last month.

The only bruisers (15lb area) I saw posted were by Gottom Guide Service (and it looks like he & his clients found them below the Pineville area).

Other than that - looks like the same old worn out dark horse cookie cutters being caught in the Altmar area. (the MFF boyz are not putting up anything notable).

hopefully our beloved MetalMan will find one down low..

Carry On.

Was going thru my pics on the wifes digital camera, 40 pics of steel. Last trip down we went 7 for 12,  3 we did not land one in the 15lb range hit it on the bend above the trestle and it lined my buddy. But out of all they are pretty much 8 to 10 lbs. Last trip also mostly males and dark, one fresh hen hit and was in the 3 we did not land. Heading up again friday if anyone wants to hook up new years morning for a float let me know, one of the good days as everyone is hungover and home.

HEY GUYS, I had scouts out looking for Ice sunday while I was looking for walking burger.. They found some brave souls in the north (not too far north) walking on hard water ice fishing.. Pictures today prove it's here..
Soon, very soon I will also be one of those nuts..

But yes this thread is about Steel slammers:
Thoughts from my useless mind.. In the past 10 years the volume of size fish has decreased while the amount of fish increased.. The good & possibly bad sides of the coin depending on which you chose.
Not to say there are not big fish. Yes there are.. Remember though, this is also a blood sport by all rights.. Many of the Big fish leave the river, forever.. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes as the data and quotas establish the limits..

The flip and unknown factor (to me)..
Does the increase in fish population decrease the number of larger fish.. My thoughts, yes but they are my thoughts ONLY.
Does it seem to matter to the fishers that frequent the rivers ? Seems not as things are as or more popular then ever..

    Pictures:
    3fan:
If you can e-mail pic's then you can surly post them here. It's much easier really.
I would like to see some (any) folks outings through a lens..

    Rant:
I went through the last posts I avoided the last few days (week)..
Shame , and sad.. Busting balls and being a prankster is well just the nature of the beast on forums. The rest is plain and simple garbage.. Sorry if I pizzed folks off.
Another thing stuck in my azz cheeks is, who really cares how one spends "their" time, what they wear or how expensive their toys are.. Text away , play your funky music and wave your freak flag, wave it wide and high..

    Peace & Tuna

I too will be looking for a bit of ice a few times this winter.  Sandy pond, Henderson and Sacketts Harbor.  I wave gotten 1 steel and a few rainbows through the ice in Sacketts.

HT couldn't agree more on your post.   What do you go after on the ice???   We go after perch.   If we get more than  needed for a meal  We sell the rest to pay for gas up a back.

clint, our main goal target the last 3 years was a 40" pike.. That happened last feb so I guess a new goal is in order.
I fish mostly the ADK's .. Depending on the water body the target species may be, Tigers, Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout, Salmon or pannies.. All of which have been caught on any given target water..

I found pond ice last evening in the nearby State Park. Just a bit more than skim at this point, but the surface is covered. After our warmup today, it will be back into ice-makin mode temps. Looking forward to crappies/sunnie pan fried dinners.

Luv me some freak flag, just not the wide ones (they tend to burn holes in your clothes and/or car seats)

Did some scouting for them evil coy dawgs last night. Locator howls had them yippin at me left and right. But I knew the terrain & current wind conditions were not in my favor for 12ga close-quarter ambush tactics.

Heading back out in 1/2 hour to catch them from another angle, this time with my long range 223 pea-shooter.

Breakfast of Champions, cup o Joe, and hopefully a dirt nap for Wiley E Coyote just as the sun starts to peak over the Pocono Mountains.

What a Way to Start Thee Day.

Gotta a "secret" spot that was skim the other day the rain took care of that though--still holding hope---- although as soon as it's ready some azzclown will post it on the net in an effort to be the "man".

Nice job with the steel through the ice clint; in reality, the ice spots you mentioned are basically waterways of eastern lake Ontario so post away buddy along with any other of you ice fishers out there...

Drake is that the same lab that tried to jump through the computer screen st the sight if my kids going to throw the stick in that pic I posted over the summer???

Nice lab btw; for a female she's got a pretty nice cinder block head...

Here's Nancy on one our favorite secret ponds. It's only accesible by railroad tracks.
    That's a beautiful pup, Drake.
HT., I fish a  redneck marina  with big pike that has a bar  on the water in sight of the tip-ups. I think you might enjoy it. It's  a little south of Saratoga.  I 'm putting new line on the jig reels tonite.
I had a number of shots at big steel this fall. I couldn't get it done. All thumbs and azzholes. All the countless hours on the water, ya think I could calm down a little. Not. I guess I'll be composed when I'm decomposing.

digging the wheeles in up to the axle, here is another fun day on George last year:
It was -3 with 18" fresh snow. No tracks ( the other shanties are ours) and unknown ice depth (at time).. We went 1.5 miles, if Lance was not throtle to the bar we would get stuck.. We never got stuck and the ice was 6"..

Now drake, old school.lol.. Charlie has a few years on me but I learned early on from Ole' Timers :)

    (these fish have no eyes)

Folks I'm stoked about the upcoming Ice season but Real PIZZED it's taking so long.. Shoot, figures I had to spend LAST Dec in an Arizona Desert..

Well, based on the fact that you guys drove that rig over unknown ice depths makes me question your intelligence/sanity levels..

I sincerely hope you don't have an "unfortunate mishap" like the nitwits on Lake Oneida that drive snowmobiles through the ice.

Sorry for the hardcore crtique HT, but snow covered ice hides non-visible hazards like spring seeps and other chit that will get you wet & possibly dead in short order.

    Stay safe out there.

drake if that gave you the chills then I think you'll enjoy this madness

Another very popular ice lake, we walked (no machine ) at least a mile out & down the lake.. Water was 160' deep where I'm standing. Ice was 4" thick, about 4 turns on the auger and YES that is open water fog in front of us.. Air temp -5..

Great thing, there ARE slammers in there :)

I used to fish a lake in Northern Pa where we would stand on the ice and cast to the open water around the inlet trib. When you hooked a trout you had to flip it up onto the ice, or it would get snagged on the edge and invariably escape. If you went through it was only about 3 feet deep, but cold water is cold regardless of how deep. Fortunately the parking lot was very close by, and it was a short hop to the Brackney Inn and warming beverages!

L-13, that is wild stuff for sure.. In the late 80's we used to fish kinderhook lake just like you.. Stand on shelf and cast to open water.. While I was not fishing with him at the time, a friend caught the NYS record (then) black crappie outta that lake casting to open water..

Folks, I may be crazy and just a little brain dead but I'm not stupid.. Always be careful when doing such things. Don't go it alone and bring safety gear picks, rope etc. so you can fish another day..

Nothing wrong with being a little crazy; but yes safety always comes first... I always enjoy fishing/standing on the sometimes 5+ foot ice bank that forms on the south bank of joss hole in february; also a nice ice shelf forms on the other side of the island just above the sycamore; its always a pretty sight when you drag a pink cheeked beauty up on some untouched ice/snow....

    Btw; great pics tuna

Well then, I still think you are CRAZY - approaching the Darwinian level on the scale...

I know they say you can drive a car on 8in of ice, but I wait till it's at least 6 for my fat arze.

A few years ago I went to the nearby flood control resovoir with a guy. He punched the first hole in the ice and no water popped up through the hole - because the water was 8 feet below the ice... I ickscrayed my azz outta there quicker than quick. I fully agreed with him that I was a ****.

****ty morning in da woods - 1 for 8 on crow shots.. they laughed at me.
