Sacandaga Lake Ice Fishing

Anyone ever fished this lake through the ice? I talked with a gentlemen yhere this evening he said theres about 2 1/2 inches of ice and the walleye fishing is good on that lake. If anyone could let me know of a good ice fishing lake I would appreciate it.

Sacandaga is pretty good. They've got the record northern pike. They pull some monsters out of there. Theres better lakes in the area though for a more abundance of fish. Sacandaga's huge. watch the ice heaves

Hey guys-  where are the best places to park/ get on the ice at Great Sacandaga?  I know theres a zillion camps but I don't know anybody in any of them. Any particular part thats known as a hot spot for their monster pike? I'm coming from the east. Thanks ...

    Hi Yank:

Nice spending some time with you on Round Lake today.  If you go over  Route 29 toward  Broadalbin you will  come to a turnoff for  Route  30A  where you would normally turn left to go to Amsterdam.  Instead  turn right and be  prepared to turn left and follow Route 30A until you pass Route 349 and on the right you will see a sign going to Mayfield.  Follow that road until you come to a bridge with a falls on the right and a lake on the left.  The lake on the left is Mayfield Lake and has some large pike.  To the right is the channel that leads to great Sagandaga Lake by the marina.
Hard to find good access to Great Sacandaga without knowing someone on the lake or walking a long way from parking on Route 30 North heading toward Northville.
I still think you would have a better chance of catching a large pike on Saratoga Lake or Lake Lonely.  I have even caught pike up to 38" long at Spier Falls NYS Boat Launch through the ice.

Thanks for the info/advice Ed.  Sorry I wasn't around long after you arrived, I'm not an all-day diehard like Hook.  Hope you had better luck than I.  The fish-cam didn't work right, only had 3 LEDs lit up out of 12.  It was way too dark down under that snow cover to see more than a few inches away. Looks like i get to use my warranty already.

Good to see you guys, Ed and Hook... catch ya another day

I fished a tourney on sacandaga a few years ago, i think it was called the "fishhouse" tourney, parking at the intersection of fishhouse rd and south shore rd. i believe its a annual event, usually around valentines day. they send me the reg, via mail every year, anyway, there were alot nice pike entered. and a few nice trout. i havent fished there since, but would like to. we were set up along the south shore, just east of fishhouse rd. we caught a few small waleye, and perch, but nothing to enter. but a do you ever really have a bad day fishing?

I just went down to the lake ( Great Sacandaga ) to check the ice and seen where a shanty went through off Paradise Point. The back end went through and a half dozen guys there trying to get it back up. That says it all.

The bite was good on the lake last night. With the exception of a few snow machines, we had it all to ourselves.

Still have 6 to 7 inches of good ice once you get out there. Most of the shore line has open water. Most had a few fish, nobody was too busy. Fished out of Mayfield.

Colddddddddddddddd weather on the way. It will freeze the shoreline up so we can get back at it. Hope this new storm takes it easy on us.

Let me know when you are going to try Sacandaga again and I might join you.  I could meet you at Stewarts on Route 30 in Mayfield and go from there.  I never had much luck on Sacandaga ice fishing and would like to have you point out some of the good spots for walleyes.

Good plan Ed, would like to have you come along. Just before the warm up I was doing well. One night they ran me out of bait. Lets see what the new storm brings. Anytime you want to come up I will show you where to access the lake, even if I can't make it on that day. I live just about on the lake.

Ed, I just went ans checked the lake. The water level has come up over the last several days. Shoreline is soft to open. Maybe by the weekend we can get out. There are a few guys out there, walked planks to access.

Thursday or Friday would be good for me.  Tell me when/where to meet you and I will be there.  Would just like to find a place on Sacandaga where I can get some eyes.  Haven't had any luck on Saratoga or Lake Lonely.  Let me know what I should bring, as I already have a sled, 10" Master Strike Power Auger and all the other necessary equipment.  Will also pick up some bait @ Saratoga Bait & Archery Shop on the way - just let me know what you would like in the way of bait.
Look forward to fishing with you and anyone else that would like to join us.

Ed, lets give it a try on Fri. Bring your sled and gear, pick up a dozen or so bait and I'll do the same. You want both perch bait along with some medium size. I also pick out a few large as there are some northern in there that are huge. Bring your lunch and whatever else you need. Meet me at Stewarts in Mayfield, RTE 30 at 9am. I drive a black Durango. If this works for you let me know and I'll be there.

All set and looking forward to seeing you at Stewarts in Mayfield at 9am.
We had quite a bit of snow tonight in Wilton and flurries are predicted for the rest of the week.
If anyone else wants to join us - see you at Stewarts Friday.  I'll be driving a gold Dodge Stratus with sled in the back seat.

Eagle Crg from Gloversville would like to see us out on the ice, but can't get there by 9am at Stewarts.  Could you give me a location we will be fishing so I can give him an idea of where to find us.  Or better yet, if you have a cell phone number he can call let me know with a PM.
    See you at 9am tomorrow.

    Thanks,

Ed, very much enjoyed your company on the ice yesterday. Sorry it wasn't more productive. If I had been able to bring up that northern the wind might not of seemed so bad. Man, was that a cold wind or what. Also enjoyed meeting your friend. Lets do it again soon.

Tough day on the ice with that wind, but great fellowship.  Thanks for taking the time to show me a great spot to ice fish.  Maybe next time we will catch a day in the 80s during February!  Lou and I may go up to Northville Beach next week and if we do I will give you a shout.
