coyote hunting

My son wants to go coyote hunting, but in the book it says after big game season is over. Does that mean after flintlock and second season bow. Didn't know what to tell him, ant insight...

as far as i know you can hunt coyotes all the time, but you must follow the orange requirments for what ever season is in. hunting coyotes is tuff. they will go down wind every time. you must check the wind a put a buddy 60 to 80 yds down wind. that is a must. dont use anytrhing like rabbit in distress. there are lots of dead deer and gutt piles in the woods rite now. the coyotes arent as hungry. use howls and coyote fights or hurt pups. in jan through march, use challenge howls, and territorial calls. they are like bucks in rut. looking to breed and fight.

Coyotes are open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

I prefer night hunting, but dusk & dawn are also good times to hunt.

    Equipment:
I try to call them in close - less than 50 yards - so I use a 12ga shotgun loaded with #4 buckshot.

Lights - I use a headlamp to scan eyes with a red lens (colored by a sharpie pen).
I have a small Coleman flashlight with end switch attached to the barrel (for use as kill light).
My barrel clamp = black electrical tape..
I use inexpensive mouth calls - wounded rabbit, fawn in distress, and coyote howls/yips.

Decoys - if I hunt in daylight - I sometimes use my homemade decoys (a turkey feather or squirrel tail attached to a stick via fishing line).

There is no need for a big budget to hunt yotes.

The wind is your greatest friend/enemy. I setup in a crosswind position and look for them to make their move to the downwind side.

Be very quiet when traveling to your spots - they will bust you quicker than quick.

Coyote hunting is very challenging - and humbling.

    Good Luck to You.

dogs are about the best way, but that is quit pricie. u need tracking collars and good hounds. i know because i have 4. i guy wont part with a good hound unless you are willing to pay big bucks. if the hound is for sell for a coulpe hundred. the guy is getting read of it for a reason. im not gonna say trapping is easier cause i been trapping for a few years, but ive trapped way more coyotes than ive hunted, with calls or with the hounds.

Akita I need your heeeeelp! These **** yotes are taking over my deer woods. I've never seen a yote while deer hunting until this year. and I've seen 2. Got a couple pop shots on a running one but missed. Couldnt get my cross hairs on the other before he vanished into the thicket.

I seen two running through the woods while getting into my stands with my bow. they were about 100 yards away or so. The one was pitch black. I got them both on video chasing the turkeys it was awesome. Ed

Called the PGC and what a surprise, turns out that you can only hunt coyotes during the big game season while participating in the big game hunt only. That is if you are hunting during the flintlock season(with a deer tag) you can shoot a coyote with a flintlock only and same with archery. The only way you can hunt coyote with a rifle during big game season is with a fur takers license. Glade I called

hmmm, interesting,, but I beg to differ with the info you received.

With a furtakers license, you can hunt yotes any day without restriction.

Without a furtaker license - during the regular rifled deer season, you must wear the required orange and have in your possession an unused deer tag.

    ****************

If what the PGC rep told you was true, you would be required to also purchase an archery/muzzle license if you wanted to hunt during those seasons.

According to the chart located on pg 43 of the Pa Hunting Digest, that is not the case:

    darnit - I think I'm cornfused again.

we use cast netts to catch shad for catfishing. what was in the book was unclear on being able to use them. my buddy called to ask and talked to a lady who told him as long as the net was not over 4' u could use them anywhere except for a couple bigger lakes that you need a permit. this was 2 years ago. a couple weeks after he called, another buddy and i was throwing our nets getten bait and here come the fish police. $86.00 fines and they could of took our fishing license and our nets. they told us cast nets are illegal except for those lakes that you need the permits. i wouldnt trust what they tell you when calling for a question. ask an officer if you see 1 or know 1.

Thats what they told me. Yes you can hunt them in the rifle season if you have a deer tag but other that its what ever big game season it is, unless you have a fur takers licence

I suggest you call them back, tell them to take a look at their chart.

One of them is wrong, and I'm stickin with the chart.

Elsewhere in the digest it specifically notes the need for an unused tag for regular rifled deer season or bear season. (a.k.a. Must be legally hunting).

Even if I had a furtaker's license, (according to what you were told), if I was hunting coyote during muzzy season, I would be totin a 12ga with #4buckshot or a 223 - those firearms are not legal guns for hunting deer during the firearm-specific muzzleloader season, hence I would not be legally pursuing deer anyway.

I would love to be able to use a Ruger Mini-14 or a Remington R-15 for coyotes

If that ever comes to fruition, kindly pick up the pile of spent shell casings that will litter the forest floor.

I honestly hope that semis are never allowed. I think it is a challenge to get them into shotgun range, and if you choose to hunt with a rifle, you rarely get a second shot - there is always another day. I think it should be left that way.

Just my personal preference, - that hunting is not supposed to be "tacticool".

I'm not really concerned about the safety aspect - cause I rarely ever encounter another coyote hunter in the woods, but I think the shoot-em-up types (not directing comment at you) would change the game in a negative way.

however, I would love to hop a chopper and semi-auto Texas Hogs (this is on my bucket list of things to do someday):

    HELICOPTER HAWGS

in pa. a semi is a rare need...not many times you call in a double....when you do shoot the furthest first then the closest....i have only called in 1 double in 15 years....plenty of singles...i've called numerous doubles on bobcats though...
