saw a post on a local site where a guy shot a buck that had metal earings on it that offered up a $100 PGC reward.

Never heard of this program before..

Have any of you guys ever scored a Benjamin via Bambi?

It was stocked by the PGC,It was from Montana and has the deer sickness. It was stocked in Pa. with the hopes of reducing are large deer herd since hunters can't do it.True story I swear. lol

I once shot a gobbler with a $100 reward tag and one year helped tag some $100 gobblers as part of a research project but wasn't aware of any such project regarding deer. It tends to be a good incentive to turn in the information they want.

Over the past few years there have been over 1500 deer tagged and monitored for both movement and harvest statistics. Many, if not most, of them have $100 reward tags on them so hunters who harvest them will call the information in.

Those tagged and collared deer are also how they know just how easy it is for deer to avoid being harvested in some units. In WMU 2G the hunters only harvested 8% of the does, 8% of the 1 ½ year old bucks and 29% of the 2 ½ and older bucks that had been tagged, collared and available for harvest during the 2009 season.

S-10 is correct that the reward bands are also used on turkeys and for the same reason, to get hunters to report the kills so they can determine the affect hunting has on the populations in various areas of the state. We are presently about to start the third year of a four-year study on hen turkey mortality. Once the muzzleloader season is over we will start our winter turkey trapping efforts. The hens will all get bands and some of them will also be equipped with a GPS transmitter so it can be monitored for both location and survival by satellite. I am finding it absolutely amazing how far some of those turkeys are moving from winter to summer and fall. They are frequently many miles from where we trap them in the winter.

Am I reading this right? That the older bucks were over 3 times as likely to be killed as the younger bucks & Does? Sam

You have to remember that this is 2G he is talking about. Since they trap most of them in the winter or early spring before they have antlers it is very possible that most did not have legal antlers at the time hunting season rolled around. Other research in the big woods area has shown many 1-1/2 yo bucks are spikes y's or 4 points. Actually at 2-1/2 not all bucks in that area will make AR requirments. Even in the better areas of the state AR saves about 50% of the 1-1/2 yo.

    S-10 pretty much explained it.

A higher percentage of the 1-½ year old bucks in 2G either aren’t antler legal or just not what most buck hunters are looking for in today’s buck seasons. The thing that I find the most interesting though is that hunters only harvested 29% of the antler legal older bucks in the unit. Most likely they don’t find them because once the pressure starts those older bucks get back into the more remote areas where most hunters don’t go.

The thing that I find the most surprising though is that hunters only harvested 8% of the marked does in unit 2G. Of course one of the big reasons the doe harvest is so low is the fact there are so few 2G antlerless licenses. In 2009 there were only 6.32 antlerless licenses per square mile in 2G even if everyone who got one used it. In 2010 the number was down to only 3.70 antlerless licenses per square mile. With so few antlerless hunters it was no wonder the antlerless harvests were so low. At any rate I think it is very hard for hunters to claim or even suspect that the lack of deer in unit 2G would be because of hunters harvesting too many of them with such low antlerless harvest rates.
