Hotels?

I'm thinking about going up for a couple days around xmas. What are some hotels in the Altmar area? What's the fishing like at that time? Is it mainly steelhead and some browns? Is the technique different than a month or so ago?

Not alot in Altmar itself, bar some smaller ones.   I think there is one up in Pineville.  Your best bet would be in Pulaski.
Steel are starting to transition over to winter lies.  I have heard beads, smaller sacs and egg pattens working.

Hey Trobe mostly steel and an occasional brown with a few coho spread around... clint is correct with the winter lies especially towards the upper river... as the winter sets in natural patterns such as hares ears or stone flies, caddis pupa, or wet flies wooly worms or buggers and smaller streamers... also the pink worm should be starting to work its magic as well...

Hotels: the comfort zone is a great stop... fish on was my most frequented in my hotel days; it was always convenient being right in town...

    Good luck with your trip

if you want cheap & clean - Brenda's Motel on Rte 48 - a mile north of the Pineville Bridge. $25 night.

Other places in the area will cost you close to double that amount (or more).

If you stay at Brenda's just bring a sleeping bag last time I was there the heat wasn't on yet and it was warmer outside then inside.

For the price you can't beat brendas that is always my go to place.

Always liked Red Cedar ( mighta changed the name) walk across the street to Bonanza to eat and two tackle shops within a hundred yards to walk to as well.

Tuna; I've noticed ice and frozen ground lasting through the days now... took a nice ride through northern orange, ulster and sullivan counties yesterday. Checked out the mohonk preserve for the first time... what a place. It was butt cold up on the mountain... im sure sooner than later you will be walking on water... be safe man.

Dime, go check out the Mohonk Mountain House sometime, if you didn't take the path to it.  The porch overhangs a beautiful spring fed pond that is chock full of giant pellet fed rainbows. Incredible wooden structure. I use to climb in the Gunks on a regular basis. There's a reason I can still get around on roofs pretty good.  We use to camp there up top, using some of the walk-ups in the dark. It is a cool place. I've watched some of the world's best free climb 5.13+ there. There are numbers of cool places on the Shawngunk ridge- there's ice caves on the opposite side from New Paltz near Ellenville off 209.

Wow charlie; gonna have to check that out... I was just taking a Sunday drive with the boy ...we mostly drove through but managed to stop off at 2 different creeks that looked like some prime trout (possibly brookie? ??) Water.... my son will definitely get a kick out of those rainbows. I now am living only 25-30 minutes from there so looking forward to visiting there and maybe some of my old time creeks in the western cats... maybe a possible rebirth of the eastern board???? Wink at tuna ;)

Also; maybe time for another BS THREAD??? sorry for the hijack dtrobe ;)

Although 10 day forecasts are a shot in the dark.... Thursday is calling for rain; so look for a possible flow increase in to the weekend; whether it be run off or dam release..... otherwise 4 of the 10 days are calling for snow.... highs are in the low 30'sas for all 10 days and morning lows in the 20's.... sounds like perfect conditions to me :)

Keep in mind that yesterday morning the 10 day called for 3 of the days to be rain (which are now snow)... so there is a chance it may get colder than they are saying as the days get closer... good luck

Sat. looks to not break freezing. I wasn't planning on downtown Altmar anyway, crowds might be thinner.  No storms  east of the Hudson to worry about either.
500-1000 would be too much to ask for.

Had a YMCA Physical Director's Conference at Mohonk in the 70's.  You can fish the lake for hugh rainbows and the kitchen will prepare them for you (at least they did then) to eat at dinner.  Expensive place to stay, but well worth it when the gardens are in bloom and the hike to the fire tower was great.  Has a beautiful view from the fire tower on a clear day.

I sure did my Pennsyl(ken)tuckyan friend...

After living 5 miles from the boarder my whole life I finally made the leap to northern orange county....now, the true question is which state of the two is most corrupt???

awwweee - you moved to the land of overpriced (and butt-fuggin ugly) motorcycles..
on the bright side - look how much coin you will save on feeshy license..

don't know which state is more corrupt, but I do know both are anti-gun liberal strongholds.

again to just stay on topic .. lol before I get to left base..
DT, there are some pretty cozy places in the area , esp for the minimalist. I don't want to get a local debate going but Be glad to steer you in or keep driving.. Just pm me with any concerns

    now heading to the ditch..
DB a true new yawker ... well only hoping the grass is greener over here bro..
there are some great (so been told) southern NY trout waters , resivors and streams.. my experience there is nill, always been a northern boy & if you desire to trek north give me a shout.. a lot closer then Pulaski ..
The ice is coming along nice (as can be expected) about now.. Some scouts have been out and the western ADK's have people standing on hard water, as of sunday..

Times are tough, just no time ,,
A work weekend this week then heading north in search of the clear, hard, water..

Have fun where ever your fish may lead you :)

Not pretending to b an "expert" as I haven't needed a place to stay in 16+ yrs(back in the day stayed in almost ALL of em)--the Double Eagle was the nicest place I had stayed in to date--have heard from many friends that 1880 house is top notch--my brother and crew have been staying at the Port Lodge the last several yrs(it serves the purpose)--got alot of good reviews on Steelhead Lodge recently.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.
