3 or 4 seasons ago my brother was fishing beads with no weight...he managed to get a few out behind my place but keep in mind that was slow water in which proper casting/mending/drifting will allow the bead to sink properly... charlie man; sounds like you've got some science up your sleeve with your indie rigging...props to you; I have never dove in to that end myself, but prefer to fish without one anyways.... I do imagine a bead would fish well with an indie if rigged properly though... I most likely would stick to fishing a bead under a float, but that's just me...

dime and wader, i like both you guys, but gees...enough drop it, beat the crap out of each other...what ever, just do it in private thank you for your support :) i've fished beads without the float retired, but they are more effective with it without you get that bare hook snagged on all the bottom crap so fishing them as intended (under a bobber of some sort...be that float or indie) does work best atleast for me

Saw 40 today but only harvested bout half. Was kinda bored though cause yesterday saw bout 75 and harvested bout three quarters of them -started late yesterday too. No 'cookie cutters' either -they were all monsters Never moved my feet- stood in one place both days. Was a bit handicapped cause I forgot my rod and had to wind my line around an old soup can. Also forgot my flies and had ta use a bit of colored material ripped off of my shirt. Now go puke

ORIGINAL: retired guy    May just decide to curl up and die right now. Guys in Crazy are still out fishin you guys bout a hundred thousand to one- One can hit 100 a day in the Zone and another has had many 30 fish days this year -all this on topa the stuff mentioned in the past day or two. Here I was askin for advice in all the wrong places. Scuze me while I go puke again. Last time I was up there was a crew in the LFZ that was hooking up at the rates indicated, using conventional fly gear, but in a less than conventional way. They were right above the big riff on the first curve above the bridge, and they were kind of modified C+Ding so they swung into those pockets at the tail. Had there been an ECO around, he might have asked about the quirky palsey that seemed to strike the fishers at about the same time in every drift. But they were bending rods a lot, even if not for long. Other than that crew people were hooking up at about the rates mentioned by posters here, and it occured to me that there might be a pipe from the hatchery to where they were that was disgorging fish. Have fished that spot myself in the Winter 13. There are generally fish stacked there but the chances of foul hooking them even without the hero lift are huge with the numbers of fish some days. Thats why I stopped fishing that spot. When fishin the Kiddie pool those guys are commonly observed chasing sideways fish down . Wont say they all do it intentionally but thats what happens running a line down through a run like that occasionally holding a ton of fish. There is a difference some dont get tween fishin and linin.

Yea - I fish there in the winter. Cant get out and run around in the snow like the old days what with the cold air- and related old guy respiratory 'issues'-gotta carry a pharmacy with me at it is-.Sometimes on decent days can park and get away from the crowds but generally closer in that weather. It is what it is and gotta make the most of it.

Thanks Dime- gotta admit that sometimes the LFZ in Winter can be a real pain in the butt- some of those 'regulars' there think they own the hole. Last winter a guy had a great drift and was hookin up kinda often. He left - moved up to his drift. His buddies came right over and wanted me OUT cause that was their friends 'spot'. Bout an hour later he came back- guess he took a lunch break and forgot to leave his 'reserved' sign. I had moved cause aint gonna fight over a place to stand on a river- ahhhh to be in my 30s or 40 again- more genteel and sophisticated now. That said some guys really need a reality smack.

RT - I know you are an old buck, but if/when I get to be your age, I would fish the Unemployment Hole down to the Staircase. Easy access, paths are always plowed by previous footprints. Nothing personal - but I stand by my Chump Remark - your latest post verifies it.. ************** A few years ago, I was just watching the nitwits flogging the water from the Rte 52 bridge. Some complete A-hole (most likely one of them regulars you mentioned, was berating a young kid that was trying to fish just above the ramp (the kids Mother was with him watching from the bank). It Pizzed me off so much that I strolled over, said hello to the Mom, and asked her if she minded if I helped out the situation)told the kid to follow me upstream another 15 yards... Stood between the kid and the A-hole, and told the Purist POS to make my day and start berating me... He threw a hizzy fit and left. Kid hooked up but lost a couple of fish trying to weave it through the bowl of spagetti noodles being tossed by the other floggers. I explained to the kid and his Mom, that they would be better served if they fished below the bridge - where there is a better chance for adults to act like adults (and help a kid out). CHUMPVILLE - and the fact that DB fishes there changes nuttin...

Good move with the kid and the butt hole. Yea, there seems to be too many of that ilk fishing there-they were multiplying as the winter went on too--idiots- how can they be having a good time fishin?? I did go down below a number of times as the season went on because of that kinda idiocy -right where you suggested too and really like the water but had issues with all the darned restricted parking and no trespassing signs. Ended up parking behind the bar by the needle and walking over to the big bridge area and going down. Now that Pineville is back on track may well spend more time around there on bad days. On good days I still hike up to the lower Bovines and fish back down to Tressel. Didja notice that most of those mouthy guys use enough weight on their 'fly' rods to fill a muzzel loader.

I've had a few legitamate great days on the LFZ. One was earlier this fall with Tuna and Pafisher, the others were in the dead of winter. I don't particularly care what people think- I like to catch fish. One day where it snowed all morning, the afternoon warmed up with not a soul around and the steelies were making V's and smashing a swung crayfish right underneath the bridge. I've also done well there drifting pink chenille worms. When I have little time, need to be in cell service (I get bars in the kiddie pool) or just am plain tired out, the LFZ is good a place as any. One of the biggest steelhead I've seen, I saw some huge, defensive tackle size, black guy get ,swinging a spey fly. You'd probably want to say "you are a chump, SIR" to him. Charlie

I have to give the place a wee bit of credit, at least we know where the term "shootin fish in a barrel" was coined from.. If you guys like to fish there, have at it - but don't consider it as fair chase conditions.. The LFZ is a small step above Snagger's Cohoe Ditch (a.k.a. tackle testing lab).. damm - I just had a great idea to raise extra funds to save the SR fishery: the DEC should build a few elevated booths along the LFZ banks, charge $10/hr, and the playa can use a set of joysticks to operate a scoop shovel to grab the feesh (like them toy grab novelty machines that take a quarter per pull). I suggest they paint them yellow - so our resident D9 operator feels at home in da saddle...
