Questions

1. My 92 year old Mom wants to see Niagra Falls, she doesn't care when. I guess it's on her bucket list. So my question is, is the Niagra worth wade fishing? Or anything in that neighborhood?  Chuck and Duck? I'd rather fly than spin, but can break out the spin  gear if need be.
2. My wife's nephew, might as well say a good friend, wants to go chase some steel with me. I thought maybe taking a drift trip might give him a better taste of the river and take the pressure off me to get him hooked up. Any reccomendations for a guide that does fly and spin? PM's are OK if you don't want to offend anyone. Thanks.

Fichy, Grew up in Niagara Falls. Not much wade fishing in the upper Niagara, unless you are Bass/Muskie fishing in Spring. The Lower Niagara does get a nice run of Salmon and trout (Steel/Rainbows - Browns - Lakers). There is a stretch of the River near "Devil's Hole" ( where the Seneca Indians scalped the settlers).

You can wade some parts there or fish from shore when river is low due to Niagara Power project filling reservoir. There is also a fishing access ramp near Artpark that allows access from shore. Understand fishing is good but tough and could be dangerous. They are always pulling bodies out of the whirlpool and rapids a few times a year. It is also a tough walk down to the river and back to parking lot at Devils Hole.

Economy is bad there. Quite a bit of crime ( car breakins) , so you need to be cognizant of your environment.
    Good Luck

Charlie it sounds like chuck and duck may be the way to go; you can use your rod for fishing and as a weapon... lol...jk....

    Enjoy your trip...

Oh; missed one of your posts...SORRY.... SR DRIFT GUIDES: I would say just about any one of the many names that has been out there for some time will do you just fine... most of the regular names that have drifted the river for some time know the river very well and honestly you are a great fisherman yourself.... the fish are there and that s all that counts...good luck with your trips and have fun....

Ps...Altmar outfitters has always gotten good reviews from people I've known...

    I'll second RichW's comment about the trek in/out of Devil's Hole. It's a beotch...
Just visited the place once, did not even fish due to high turbulent water. One slip down there and you are gone!!!

    Guides:

Try Randy Jones that visits this site - he does both fly and spin. I may be wrong, but I think he only floats the Altmar to Pineville stretch.

If you want to explore the middle river by boat, Shane Thomas (GOTTUM Guide Service) will take you as far down as you want to go - all the way to the Black Hole.

I have heard nothing but good things about Shane Thomas, web is theriverguide.com and phone # is 315 298 4530.I have never used a guide but as mentioned have heard good things about him.Randy Jones is another good name, fished next to him on the UFZ several times and he had his clients into Salmon and seemed like a good guy.
That's what I was going to PM you Charlie, but make some room in your box.

i would never consider wading in the lower niagara. I fish down there all the time. its not worth it to stand out 3 feet farther. I have seen people wading chest deep in winter from my boat but it is just dumb to do. bring sink tips and split shots because the water is deep and fast
