    I fail to see the strategic advantage of loading the gun before hauling it up the tree...

    This story makes me wonder:

    If I hunt out of a stand it is custom built wooden stands that have 10 or 11 rungs of a wooden ladder built on a slant - easy up/down. I hand carry an unloaded rifle up/down with me.

    I'm curious how you guys with portable stands do it when hoisting up a gun by rope. Do you simply tie a rope through the trigger guard, do you hoist the gun up in it's case?

    I can see a gun spinning and knocking the scope against the tree truck if the hoister was not careful.

    how do you do it?

    With my ladder stand Drake  must confess its slung over my shoulder and empty- Too many of those spinning scope taps on the tree or the ladder. With the bow - hoist it up.

    I just take/use a soft shell gun case and tow up with the handle. AND needless to say NEVER EVER LOADED . Although loading a gun in the tree stand is quite noisy but not worth the chance

    I hook a carabiner through the sling where it attaches to the buttstock.  I hold the thin rope away from the tree and hand over hand it.  I have never had it spin or strike the tree and/or stand.  A friend of mine uses one of those retrievable dog leases, which sounds like a great idea, but I haven't tried it -- yet.

    I'm guessing it hit a part of the stand or a tree first. I can't imagine a hunting slug not getting better penetration than that, especially if it was one those copper sabots.

    My uncles used to make me unload my gun while crossing fences, creeks, and log jams. They were sticklers for safety.
