A first for me!
Not fishing related but today after 20 years of trying I managed my first deer. A nice 8 point that was about 5 to 51/2 years old, I have watched many go by not really a meat hunter and I let this guy go by to thinking he was a nice 2, 2 1/2 year old and its still early. Well he laid down 30 yards in front of me and I starred at him for an hour and half. I realized he was older than I thought and said to myself if he presents me with a chance to take him I will, and he did. He is at the processor now and to the taxidermist tomorrow. Got a great old wound on his right ear and his muzzle is all grey and the hair between his ears a rusty red. Having a cold one right now feeling pretty proud. Would like to show him off so if any one wants to see it that knows how to post pics pm me your email. This was my only tag so tree stand comes out tomorrow and its time for steel! Tight lines guys

Congrats 3fan. Good things are worth waiting for, but 20 years? Wow. At least you started out big! I hope the processor is going to let him hang in the cooler for a week or so. That tenderizes the meat--might be a bit tough if he doesn't. Again, my congratulations--I haven't filled a tag yet this year and have 4 of them.

Congratulations - that is a nice looking buck... Plus you used a sluggo gun to boot... Please excuse my ignorance, but how do you figure that deer is a 8pointer? To me it looks like a 6 pointer - each side has two tines up top (including the main beam) + the brow tine.. I don't mean to downplay your great accomplishment, but I am honestly confused and look forward to you or someone else clarifying how the rack adds up to an 8pointer. Once again - great job...

thanks.. Pa has anter restrictions, some areas 3 on top, others 3 total, makes me question alot since this will be my first year hunting deer in many moons. I will pass on a buck if I have any uncertainty regarding the legality, but any doe that comes close has an express ticket to my freezer. another question - where did you hit it? There ain't a mark on it besides the bloody nose.

Drake you are one observant dude, To be totally honest my first went over his back he ran then came right back to where I shot the second went thru his spine above where the end of the barrel is, I was in my stand shakeing at this point and I could see him and thought he was dieing but after 10 minutes he starts trying to move so I climb down and finished him off, the finish shot hit him on the other side.

wow - that deer definitely had your name on it if it returned to the spot for a second shot. I bet your heart was pounding as hard as the deers !!! It is not easy to hit with a slug gun - especially from an elevated tree stand perch.. good job. I might use my 12ga, but the rifled slugs through my smooth barrel are not very accurate - I'm lucky to hit an 8x10 paper at 50 yds.. I think I'm just going to use my tack-driver 223 varmint rifle with hollow points - go for the jugular vein/neck shot. I don't own a 30-06 or 270 rifle, and I have no plans to get one. Thanks again for posting - that truly is sweet looking deer - will make a great wall mount.

Drake like I said he was a pretty old deer for these parts,on state land around here if they make it two years they are lucky, brown is down is said alot. Processor said he probably never went into rut this year so to me that says it all! When I cant go into rut anymore just put the crosshairs on me and end it all.

ORIGINAL: pafisher Drake, the antler resriction in your area is 3 points on one side, out in western Penna. it is 4 points.I don't bother hunting anymore but have kept current with the rules. actually, the PGC changed the rules (again)....no more 4 point rule.. in my area it is still 3 on one side (counting the brow tine), out west, it is 3 "on top", (brow tines don't count). The Pa Game commission reg book is written in a more confusing manner than the NY Great Lakes tribs fishing regulations... 3fan - NY is not unique in that regard. That's why Pa initiated the antler restrictions a few years back - to give the bucks a decent chance to get old.. "If it's Brown it's Down" is the State Motto of Pennsyltucky. later
