11/22
Fished at the bend up from the Tressel for around 2 hours. Not many folks there except for a group of 4 Russians and 2 other guys. Went 0 for 2 on Pink glo bugs. Saw 2 fish taken. Went up to LFZ church hole and went 1 for 3. I got a nice silver Steel about twice the size of the one I got on Sunday on a pink Estaz with a pink tail. With no net man it was tough. Took about 15 minutes and I got it on the bank and went for the camera and it flopped back in the water. Guessing it was around 8lbs or so. There really was not many people there at all and only 1 other guy fishing the upper hole and the rest in the riffles above and below. Ellis Cove had about 5 cars, Tressel North had about 10 cars. 75% of the cars were from out of state. Overall what I saw and in talking with some guys the fishing was slow today for most, BUT most of the fish caught were fairly fresh and nice and silver. I saw no browns taken today. Gonna be crappy tomorrow so it is a no go, but Friday looks good. It was 19 degrees when I woke up this AM 36 when I started and 43 when I finished

Now that you have the disease your ruined for life. There is no cure- the only thing that can temporarily push it to the background-- for a short time- is a wife and kids. Dont know why but they always want you around on all the three day long weekends when you could be fishing.

More Cowbell! Thx for the Great Report! Hoping to get one more Saturday this week, when it is forecast to hit (maybe) 60. RG is right, it never goes away, 5 years of W+K cure, and I'm right back off the wagon! L13

I took this week off and the first week of December too. Have a wife, but no kids and that helps too. I have lived 15 minutes from the river my whole life and never really fished for Steel until I started reading this forum this year. My next goal is to get a Steel out of the fly zone and /or a Brown.

Clint, the few times I came out on a mid-week day last winter (rest were on Sat.) I had lots of water to myself. One afternoon after a snowstorm, I had the LFZ to myself and the fish went on a feed .I usually don't swing flies in the winter- I did that day. Like Dime says, it's going into the good part of the year. Charlie

I know that oftentimes fishy report info is a wee bit embellished (KUDOS to you for not describing the fish as an 18lber ).. butt did it really take 15 min for you to bring it to the bank? Not trying to make a negative PETA-TYPE judgement that you are over-stressing the fish, but just thinkin that 15 min is a long friggin time to battle with an 8 lber. Just curious - that's all.. Good job on the hookups.. Keep the reports coming. later

Drake, I was quite careful while playing it because I did not want to loose it. That along with no net man and really not knowing how my fly rod reacts and my fear of breaking off led to a longer fight time. I did not have a watch on it (and this is where the embellishing may have come in) but it sure felt like 10 plus minutes. I had it on the bank once and it flopped back in for another go around. I have had several hits and had the fly break off at the knot. Is it true to not use a cinch knot with Flouro???? I thought it was because it was a 10lb fish against a 10lb leader, but I read that small diameter Flouro does not like the cinch knot that well. Will probably hit Friday with a buddy and try to make him a believer, then then wait for my Vaca in December for more. With all this rain the tributaries should be full so I may try Orwell Brook. I also plan to walk down from Ellis cove and try too.

Clint - I don't have a problem with the improved clinch knot with Fluoro line (just make sure you wet the line before you cinch it down so you don't scrape it up with thumb nail). You don't have to match line test to size of fish (afterall, many guys catch 10lb+ fish with 4 or 6 lb tippet). In low clear water - light test line is required). I'm just thinkin out loud (and living vicariously through your fishy reports), but since you mentioned that you are hooking fish (and losing them), may I suggest that you are using sharp hooks, and when you set the hook, make sure you give the fish a sore jaw and bury it.. I never used a net, I just walk backwards and beach the fish. Sometimes they "flip out" then get off when their bellies tough the rocks, but that's part of the game I guess. Good luck tomorrow.

Given the modern rods available today that cushion the load and allow folks to use light lines I really have no negative opinion on using them. - I go down to 4lb Drennan myself. (btw - those Drennan dispensers are the cat's meow) IMO - the amount of time required to land the fish on 4lb should not automatically be double the time it would take using 8lb - if the fishyperson uses the rod & drag correctly.

Last Winter was my first real attempt at fly fishing for Steel in cold weather. Had real issues using various 5 lb leaders and a clinch knot. Breakage fairly quickly was commonplace. Went to 8 lb drennan and all was just fine. Using it now wherever I use flys anywhere on the river with excellent results.

Guys it is so bad I have not even set foot in the woods hunting this year. HT no snow up here is forcasted for a bit. The flies are coming fine I guess. Concentrating mostly on glo bugs and Estaz patterns, also been messing around with a sort of estaz bodied stone fly. Have gotten all my hits on stuff I tied. Still using a homemade vice concoction as I was promised a nice fly vice for Christmas. Rick and Dale at Pineville shop have helped me out some too. I bought a 120 yard spool of 10 lb flouro (not tippet flouro) and have been making tippets off that when my leader gets short, via a very small swivel. I will look tomorrow and see the brand. Could that be part of the problem? It never breaks at the swivel just the hook.

I'll second Pafisher's sentiments - Vanish sucks. Clint - the fluoro that is sold in big spools is not the same as the small spools.. Do yourself a favor and buy a spool of Drennan fluoro tippet. Start off with 6lb test (a happy medium between 4lb & the 8lb that RT uses). It will solve your problem, and it is an excellent cold water tippet.

drennan is definitely great; i will add though that ive had no problems with vanish... one time i went to fish dsr and all i had was my spin reel with 4 lb. vanish on it from trout season before... managed to land 4 out of 10 on it... not looking to start a leader war just telling it how ive seen it... clint, if yoour tippet is breaking off at the hook, this means that your knots are perfect... you dont want it to snap at the swivel... one comment on your choice of #10 tippet: i believe its a little heavy especially as the water is getting cooler and is still low... yes, you have had success with it, but if you jump down to #6 you may find you have more hook ups, and youd be surprised with the wood you can put to the fish with 6 lb. either way, keep up the good work and; youre obviously doing something right... btw; have you tried that tranlucent white estaz with with a colored underlye yet??? also, with those stones, try making the head with the estaz while keeping the body a thinned taper up towards the head... double goose fibbets for a tail and maybe even a bead on the head... with the stones, i find natural/dark colors have worked best for me as winter approaches, byut it doesnt hurt to have some bright ones... good luck

For other reasons this was one of my least fished years too-darn. Hey is it the fishing or something else- no DSR report in a week . Has also been nice to hear now and then on this or that forum bout some Kings still being on a bed or two here and there and some fresh Hos around. Keep fishin guys its never over up there.

I got the 10 because being a noob I wanted some extra give. I will spool the bass spinner with the vanish and get some real tippet in 6 and 8lb. DB I have tried the white with no success, BUT I made some up with very light pink and red thread with a bead head and that is what the majority of hits have been on. As far as the stone that is how I am tying it, Eztaz head with a black tread taper down to the goose tail. Some I am tying the whole hook Estaz l( sparse towards shank and leaving the head and covering the Estaz with a black tapered wrap leaving some Estaz peaking out here and there for some flash. RT I saw a very fresh king in Oswego the other day and I have seen plenty of Ho's on gravel in the river

Not much granola round my palace this year- no mast at all that I can find. The guys here are all finding stomachs fulla grass and NO nuts. Hope the winter isnt too bad on them. That said if grandpa came by--boom. NOT his grandson- grandpa.
