Hornady sabot

have been shooting the Hornady SST 300gr. Man these are great slugs. Sighting the win 1300 yesterday. poked out the BULLSEYE at every distance shot 50yd,100yd,150yd. I was using the federal's sabot till they changed them and really seamed to float. Then went to the lightfields, they are nice, hit good and on target. But @ $15.00 for five is a bit much. ICKS has the Hornady's on sale for 9.99 for 5 which is not great but!!! 2 3/4 are the size I been shooting and can not be happier with them. All but one of the deer I shot with them all went down on the ,one ran a few yards and expired. Dave

My Mossberg loved the SST's, but my Ithica would lose them after about 80 yards. It seems to prefer anything Remington. I wonder how many people try to figure out what their gun shoots best? A couple of years ago in N.Y., every deer within 5 miles should have been dead with the amount of shots I heard! lol

Bighead - do you use a rifled barrel on that sluggun?

The reason I ask is that I am very interested in how you plugged a bullseye at 150yds.
How high above the target was your POA?

Drake, are you trying to stir the pot? Bullseye is a relative term, but I have seen guys with well matched slug to gun combos hold amazing groups at 150-200. Most of them don't take 200 yard shots at deer, but they like to see the slug's stability out that far.
Browning slug guns are nothing less than a very big bore rifle! lol

no, I'm not trying to stir the pot - I asked a couple of simple questions based on the words he posted...

If, according to you, "Bullseye" is a relative term, then so is "The Side of a Barn".

I will await Bigheads answers before further comment.

My Mossberg 500 liked the Winchester Sabots. Man, sabots sure are expensive, no matter what the brand. I'll have to look into those Hornadys and see how they shoot.

I shoot the SST's as well. @ 75 yds. I site in for 1 1/2" high using a set of medium height Millet rings on a 2-7 Shotgun scope. @ 150 yds I am dead center bullseye holding groups less than 2 inches. @ 200 yds the bullet drops off, but I am still only 3" low. These are what I use in Ohio when bow season doesn't go as planned.

I have a 1187 12 g ( Hastings Barrel)that shoots Rem Copper sabot great at 100 yards 2 inch groups and better yet is the knock down killing power, that sabot has 4 petal that open up big time. My favorite slug is the Feral Premium Barnes Exspander in 3 in 20g ( a little Mossberg ported deer gun) great on paper at 100 yards and does the number on a deer.Funny I've never shot a deer over 60 yards with a slug gun but where all worried about shooting far,In Ohio gun season I just get into the thicket nasty place I can see 50 yards or so and have pretty good luck.I hunting many year all around the airport property and all the deer I kill where in nasty little thickets. I don't worry about shooting far because I choose places that don't have to shoot far.

I grabbed the ballistics off of Hornady's site. These worked out real close with my Mossberg. I don't know why the Ithica never could keep these rounds online. I don't know why this site keeps squishing the numbers together either.

I have tried a number of different sabots (very expensive testing!!!) and have found that Lightfields shoot the best from my Mossberg.  They are a bit heavier and slower than most, but like Big Tuna, the terrain I hunt truly does limit shots to under 75 yards.

Esox, In my mind you will not find a better performing slug than the Lightfield inside 100 yards. I used them for years in NY when it was slug only. They performed flawlessly and struck like Lightning.

Do you guys use rifled barrels when shooting the sabots?

    reason I ask:

I never used a shotgun for deer.
But once I tried a few test shots with regular slugs and smooth bore barrel = all over the place at 50yds.

Yeah, you have to use a rifled barrel and they are not all equal as the twists can vary (much like rifle barrels). On a rifled slug you can shoot smooth bore (actually better) because the rifling is on the bullet itself and the combination of steel and wind friction gets the bullet spinning. Sabots typically do not have rifling (like a rifle bullet) and require the grooves of a rifled barrel to get them going properly.

I have used the SSTs for 3 years and have killed about a dozen deer with them.

I shoot them out of an 870 with a Mossberg brand barrel topped with a 2x7 Leupold. I can usually get groups in the 2-3" range consistantly at 100 yards. The gun may shoot better than I do. I am deadly with this gun, moreso than several bolt action rifles that I have used over the years. This Saturday will find me in NY using the 870 eventhough rifles were maded legal this season where I hunt.

They don't seem to expand very well, but with half inch entry and exit holes trailing isn't much of a problem. All bullets have passed through the deer even if bone was encountered. Pretty much the same penetration as the old Foster style slugs I used to kill my first deer 20 years ago.

$10 a box is a good deal on these. I picked up a couple of boxes myself.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

Drake You can only shoot sabot out of a riffled barrel or even a riffled choke . And yes I mean BULLEYE taking out the hole orange sticky out !!! Which are 1 1/2 inches on the target I was using. The hash lines on the scope are as what GRIFFON said. Now I was shooting off a sled and not sure I would try to shoot a deer over a 100 yards free hand,But with a good rest yes it could be done ethically.

I'm surprised the slug only drops 1.5" at 100 yards.. Good shooting.

Thanks for info about barrels and such.

I know one thing for sure, them high brass sluggos put a dent in my shoulder compared to my normal shooting #4 buck for yotes.
I have a few boxes left, maybe I will give the shotgun another chance and try to fill a doe tag with it- since we can't hunt with 00buck in Pa.
