Tying Egg sac ????
Got a female today today that was spitting eggs. I caught them in a water bottle and water hardened them and then salt hardened them when I got home. I am going to tie some sacs for this weekend since my fly rod busted an eye (looks like a manufacturing flaw) and I am waiting for a replacement. I have never fished egg sacs before. About how many eggs per sac. I tied a few with 10 to 12 and it seemed OK. More than that was tough to tie and seemed too big. I tied in a blue net and kept some natural and dyed some purple. I am going to put some in the fridge for the next few weeks and freeze the rest. Thanks Clint

under a float = 7 - 10 dead drifting (no weight) = 12 - 15 dead drifting (with weight) = 7 - 12

Sounds good SP and LR I will be fishing under a float or use a small split if I take the float off. I cannot tie them with over 10 to 12 by hand without the eggs falling out. These are the first batch though.

Clint; go to all seasons and buy the egg sac tier... its worth the small amount of money it costs.... good info from steel and ref.... I might add that when the water temps fall in to the 30's it sometimes pays to tie sacs with as little as 3 salmon eggs (more for trout)... its worth having these small ones as a last resort on a slow day ;(

I saw that up there today. At around 16$ I will get it if I tie eggs on a consistent basis. Don't know if I will though, but if I catch anything it will be a different story. I actually rigged up a little contraption with the head of a water bottle and used one of my bobbins and it really did not take long to tie up 14 or so. I will get my fly rod back next week and will go back to that. I am trying to cover all bases on this steelhead thing.

Sounds like you're hooked clint.... hey one other pointer; when tying sacs be sure to use a " stretch" thread...

Salmon egg I generally tie 5-8--the magic thread is the way to go although in the infancy of SC there was this guy Gman that used to use a needle and thread and sow the tops---ala Betsy Ross---often wonder what became of that guy--at 1 point even had his own website--pretty entertaining man.

He sowed his sac? Sounds painful! Bit the pimpmaster was a trip for sure. RIP Must have done lots of fishing with the SC experts at the needle.

clint, don't waste $16.00 on a sac box.. it's a pain in the azz and any production tier will say they can churn them out quicker without.. heck you can have mine if you feel it is a must.. Magic thread sucks also imo.. it's just unreliable and nothing pizzes one off when that sac you tied falls apart because the thread did not overlap and bite into it's self. just another gimmick.. here is the skinny, pre-cut squares or a roll of netting, don't matter.. place flat on table & put 5>7 eggs in center of netting. pull netting to the top, give it a twist or 2 to tighten the sack as needed then just wrap standard sewing thread tight around a few times and tie off with 2 overhand knots.. easy as pie.. I never liked to overload my sacs .. you want them at most dime size.. the flies I use instead are equal or smaller then that size..

tuna, if the sac box is the one that is a square that slides closed to pinch the bag in the middle; yes i agree that it sucks greatly... but the one that looks like a fly vise with a pull lever is pretty nice; for ME it works great... clint; for winter be sure to have a few (not all) of the 3 egg bags... as tuna is correct; many effective flies that are used are way smaller than the average bag

Thanks for the info guys the first 5 or 6 took a while , but once I got the hang of it they only took a couple of minutes each. I just used some of my fly thread to tie them up. If I can stand the cold and I go over the winter I will tie hem smaller. Lets see how they work tomorrow. BTW the people at Crotland got my fly pole back already and were so sorry about the break they sent me a bag of their 444 flyline for my reel. They said it is a "second" and the color is a bit off from normal but the function and quality is the same. I replaced the Cortland Procast that was on the reel.
