so easy a cave man can do it?????

i guess i'm a step below a cave man; that would make me a neanderthal i gues???? lol

fished dsr saturday morning and was pretty stoked to get in to some chrome on egg sacs under bobbers...

crossed above the sycamore hole in dsr and while cutting across on a diagonal to get to the south bank i noticed about 40 spawning kings with a few coho tailed up nears the south bank where no one was fishng... i thought great let me work the seems and pocket water just below these sharks and im guaranteed... well nothing... worked about 500 yards of bank and this is what i came up with.... lol

some kings on saturday in were had by some and a few steel...

after a lunch and a cold one i checked out the lfz; it wasnt as packed as i thought but still a lot of guys for my likings... the church hole was loaded with fish so i figured id gear up and swing the tail out in pursuit of trout... many people foul hooking and sight flossing going on; i managed to have one legitimate king smack an orange estaz fly that took me to the head of the pool and back down to the tail where i tailed the husky male and then let him swim back out; fished til near dark with no trout and no other salmon... spooked to the bone these kings were... which is not my likings either...

hung with my neighbor for a little and then went for a dinner and a cold one and hit the hay at around 10:30... slept in til 7:30... it had rained all night steadily and that SW wind had been howling from mid day saturday through thye eveniung... went down to dsr and found myself a nice riffle flat inbetween 3 nice trubulent pockets; the south west wind had obviously done the trick; kings galore that were feisty as can be fresh from the lake... the water had risen a little bit and it was a cold rain so the water felt much cooler; it got pretty silly at some points... the best part about it was the closest person upstream was about 60 ft. and the closest person downstream was about 200 yards... every fish landed was at a minimum of 100 yards downstream... kings were holding nicely way up off the bottom in the riffles i was fishing.... nothing moving like gang busters until you hooked them so it wasnt like fish splashing all over, but there were plenty there... heres a few that i brought to hand today; nothing under 25 lbs. id say and pretty darn fresh for this time of year... many in the 30 and 30 plus range in estimate...

there were others i didnt get pics of and.. i fished until noon and called it quits as it did start to slow a little bit... i had switched to that white estaz with the orange backing in pursuit of some steel early on and i managed to have two of them slam it right away... but they were full of p!ss and were instant acrobat head shaking fly spitting animals... i kept it on and the kings were spanking the **** out of it...

i chatted with a bunch of people both days fished especially saturday... a great time was had...

this morniong i was talking to a guy wh ive been seeing down at the dsr for 22 years now; he is a guide now and he targets dsr pretty heavily for salmon with his clientel; he told me this morning that this past week was one of the best weeks he's ever seen down there between the huge numbers of kings and all of the steelhead earlier in the week... supposedly theres still fresh kings holding in 20ft.. of water out on the lake unless the ones i hit this morning were them; i would suppose there are more to come though with a lot of trout... i think salmon seaosn is going to go pretty late this year and once they fizzle out; im thinking it's gonna be the best steel head season out of the past five years... lets hope and go get em boys because theres plenty there...

I was going to ask what that fly was that was in multiple pics but you beat me to it.  White estaz with orange backing.  looks killer.   Is it just orange backing with a looser wrap.  Could you shoot a closer pic sometime or some describe how it's tied.   I would like to add that to my box

thanks guys, and yes rt; any steel i saw were pretty large; i think the smallest one i saw landed was 10 pounds... give it a few weeks... maybe some 20's???????

clint; that is just a simple estaz fly there... use some orange thread and tie in your estaz at the back of the hook; then just simply wrap your orange thread up towards the eye making sure you cover the whole hook shank; go back and forth 2 times if necessary... then just simply wrap the estaz up and tie it off at the head... you can use other color threads such as red, pink, chartruese... it tends to bleed through the white estaz... they make a straight white estaz and a sparkly one; i suggest buying both as somedays one works while the other doesnt... ive found this white with the colored undertone to be a great brown trout fly anywhere in the river...

estaz flies are pretty simple but they work well and can be tied with many variations; take a little extra time when wrapping it up and try not to overlap any of the fibers so the fly can have a better look and pulsation...tails and backs can be additional with them as well... try to come up with color patters... tie some blacks with different colored tails; blues with different color tails..etc. etc. you casn end up filling a box pretty quickly with a lot of usefull ammo...

    good luck...

    good luck...

Neanderthals lived in caves and were succeeded by Cro-Magnon, now called by scientists Early Modern Humans, as it's hard to tell them physiologically from... well...us. We'll give you the benefit of the doubt, Dime.
We do need video proof rather than just macro head shots as proof, though. How do we know you didn't re-hook?    Just pulling your chain a small amount...   Glad you had a great time. I don't have any white-transluscent over orange. I'll have to get some. Even some 14's for later. Maybe some on nymphs, too.
Thanks for the report!   That wasn't fish on, it was FISH on.

thats hysterical charlie... lmao... i made a point to do the head shots since every fish i landed was hooked in a different spot in the mouth; but yes, who's to say someone cant just pull the hook out and put it in the mouth??? ive often thought of that myself when people pride in taking shots of the fly in the mouth... im surprised you were the first to mention that out of this crazy bunch in here you can ask a few of the douglaston river keepers for sheer proof if you still dont believe(just pulling back a little)...

hey, definitely try that white estaz with the colored underlye.... and yes even smaller in the winter... you can tie it on an egg, pupa, or scud hook... use that stretch thread that they make in various colors and then either wrap the whole body with the estaz or just the head...

see ya when the kings fizzle out....

Yeah I get it. When I am in the moment I often forget things I intended to do or notice.

It was when I was in picasa editing that king pic to show that the hook was in the mouth(hook point facing out) that I first noticed it had its adipose.
At the time I never thought to look.
