So far this season the weather has been quite a battle. Man I'll bet I have got SEA-SICK 5 times swaying in the tree LOL Other than the weather it's about the same as any other year. Seeing good amount of deer and meat in the freezer!!! The wind direction is the PROBLEM can't seam to get anywhere near the BUCK stand. Making it a little frustrating,But soon the bucks will be looking for some tail and all will be good LOL Dave

I was out of work early yesterday so I set up a blind. Walked into a nasty nasty cut and jumped a wide**** I could see antlers but just couldn't tell. Put that blind up just about there. Now if a bear doesn't eat it, I'll have a nice spot on a windy rainy day in November. There were old rubs in there. No new ones. Strange year for rubs. Buddy talked me into hunting so we went to where we saw lots of doe spotting (but never hunted there). Wind strong and whirling .. figured we wouldn't mind screwing the area up. Got down about 10 minutes early and had 3 doe watching me climb down at 25 yards. Seems I get nailed everytime I get down early. Wind and rain bother us more than the deer. Once down at the truck, a guy came by and said 4 just crossed. Heading home, 4 pt chased two doe down the mountain in front of me out the road. Lots of deer there. Good thing about spotty acorns.. you find them there'll be lots of deer. Guess I'll be hitting an area in the coming weeks I first stepped foot in last night. It looks good just need to put some leather down.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Had a true Ohio giant pass by my stand 3 times tonight with his nose up a does cooter, never presented a shot even though he was within 15 yards. either moving to fast or something in the way, Ill be camped out in this stand all weekend if the wind is right, one of the few times I wish I still shot a compound as I did have 1 clear shot at 35 yards, but not with a stickbow

Well, my son plowed a nice 8 tonight. Problem is that the buck turned toward us on the shot. He got the back of 1 lung and liver it would appear. I just went with him and followed the trail (heavy blood) for 120 yards to a grapevine thicket. Time to back out, we should be able to find him in the morning. Going to be a long night...

Go Get em in the AM, you made the right move, (not that you need my approval). Good luck, and tell your boy congrats when you find him from me.

Turns out that backing out was the right answer in this case. My son and I went out this morning and found him curled up dead, in the thicket just 50 yards from where I backed out. He is happy as I am proud.

Congrats little griff.

Friday and Saturday I had two amazingly annoying days.  Always have a few per season so hopefully I got them out of the way.  Had a red dodge ram come by a dark and shoot from the truck (or out the window) about 100 yards down from me.  Muzzleloader.  I know them and their time is coming.   This morning was nice, wind perfect but no deer.   Set the stand at a bad slant, so up and down twice.     Took a nice walk and found some decent sign.  Baby sitter was 45 minutes from our agreed time so I got to the tree at 5:00.   Forgot my safety rope.  Went for a drive in my buddy's truck.   Pulled over at dark to take a pi$$ and got the e brake stuck.  Walked a half mile to meet him and came back.  Got it free and came home.  Better days to come perhaps.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Congrats to you Little Griffon!! That kid's gonna have somethin to brag about in school next week! I love seeing kids shoot deer like he did. My next door neighbor is 16 and has been trying to shoot a deer since he was 12. He finally got his first deer today on the junior hunt and i really excited about it. i love seeing that. Congrats to you Griffon!

Congrats little Griff...

Sat. AM was my only time out and sat until 10:20am w/o a deer sighting even though the AM was perfect. Thought it was going to be a good day when I crossed the creek and caught that distinctive "buck" smell. Oh well. Lots of fresh tracks in the mud so they were using the several crossings, just at night. Only heard two far off shots b/w first light and 11am when I finally left the woods after a little walk. Not many guys/kids out enjoying the last day of the early antlerless or they were having as bad of luck as me.

Weatherman was wrong again...and the front hasn't come through yet. Would have been a perfect AM again to be in the stand today. Went to bed last night with 80% chance of AM rain/thunderstorms and the radar looking like it was going to happen.

Supposed to get chilly Friday into the weekend.  Halloween weekend last year it busted loose for me.  Hopefully the same holds true this year.  Been really slow for me this year.

It has been exceptionally slow for me as well.  I hope you are right and things pick up this week.

On the bright side, the area I hunted Saturday evening blew up with good buck sign.  I noticed about a half dozen rubs on trees that  I couldn't fit both of my hands around, including one on a tree that was nearly the size of a telephone pole.  Also found a large active scrape in the same general area.  It must be one of the big boy's core areas and I plan to spend lots of time in that area for the remainder of the season.

Tippe, sorry to hear about the miss.  With 3 weeks to go, you will get another chance!

Found a scrape line with BIG scrapes yesterday. Big scrapes mean big bucks, right. Only if you consider a 8" four point big. Set up over them this morning and had him back and forth around me for over an hour. He was searching but wasn't finding. Going to hunt the same place tonight just to be sure he wasn't the advance scout.

9 year old and an x-gun tonight, he had a doe, fawn, and 6pt trailing them on sat evening. They needed to take 4 more steps to be in his wide open lane. Then at 6:40 some guy starts climbing down from a stand 200 yds across the field and they all spooked. I'm glad he learned it ain't always easy, but I felt bad for him.

Everyone has their own idea about rubs. Do you belive that large diamater ( as you mentioned) trees are "only"
rubbed by larged racked bucks ?

I don't know about only, but I do believe that in general rubs on larger diameter trees are typically made by larger racked bucks.  I would say height of the rubs is one of the best indicators to rub size, as it is pretty obvious that a big guy has been there when his rub is a foot higher than most other rubs in the area.  I also check for other trees behind the main rub which he may have incidentally rubbed while rubbing the main one, the greater the separation between the main and incidental rubs, the greater the rack size.

I may as well mention this here as I just received some really disappointing news.  Seismic crews are have been working in my area.  I just found out that they have been all through most of the property on a daily basis for a week or so now.  I guess that would explain the lack of recent sightings for me.  I don't know all of the details of the testing yet, but this bums me out to no end.  If work is going to continue for the duration of the season, I may be hanging the bow up for the year for the most part.  Really disappointed right now

Thanks for the offer and trust me that thought has crossed my mind.  I am less than an hour from the OH border.

I am not literally giving up, that is just how I feel at this point.  I have a few other properties left to hunt and will likely be giving them a shot for the remainder of the season.  I am trying to find out more about this seismic testing and figure out how long they will be screwing us for....
