I'm heading back out tonight towards a cemetary where i have seen 2 nice shooters. Might be getting some rain showers here but I will still be out there. Ed

Congrats Snyd...

Got blanked on stand this afternoon. Did see some new rubs in the area on 2" to 4" dia. trees that weren't there earlier this week.

Was thinking of heading out again Friday but they changed the forecast again.

Saturday should be a good day for "sightings" with all the people tromping through the woods and the weather forecast to be pretty hunter friendly.

Other than the oaks, the woods have opened up pretty good in my area (leaves down) and with this next big blow and front, a lot more of what is left should be gone from the trees. If it is like that here already in northern 2B, it should be even better in the mtns and up north.

Nice to get out last night. Super quiet and went up and made a little louder than desired clang with the clangy summit climber. Backed out and went down the road. The wind picked up and I got up quiet. Tipped the can at dark and had two come flying by. Drew on the doe but couldn't get her to stop. Don't think she heard me in all those loud leaves.

Congrats snyd..

Two saturdays ago my buddy called at 8:15 said he hit an 18" 10 pt. Told him I'd be out and to meet at camp. Waited at camp for him and finally called. He was on the trail with good blood at 150 yards. I told him he didn't hit him well and to back out. Next I talked to him, he jumped him out of his bed after 300 yards of trailing. I went hunting instead of helping after that. Buddy set up a camera and got a pic of him the next day. Short brown hair and lots of blood sound like leg to me.

Nice buck snyd! Went out yesterday from 3:30 til dark. Not a deer. Hunted a semi open woods between to large thickets. Saw the largest hen turkey I've ever seen. Walked up behind me with 3 smaller birds. A ton of squirrels. Was a nice evening tho.

Steelie, take it from someone that has been around for a while. You made the right choice and don't ever question it. That deer was not the one you really wanted (otherwise you would have taken him). You may change your mind at sometime about him if he comes back, adding to the story. If you had shot him with your current mindset, it would have bothered you until next year and that nagging feeling of "what could have been" would have haunted you almost every single day. When you whack him, make sure it is the one you want and make sure he is special to you. Good Luck and shoot straight, The Griffon.

Your Patience will pay off. Don't be one of those guys that shoot the first deer they see. It will make a better hunter out of you. Bow hunting is much more than meat hunting IMO. Lots of time left and hunting will only get better.

It has still been painfully slow in my primary area for me, but it is trying to get better.  I am hoping as the leaves fall it continues to pick up.  The constant 20+mph have provided less than optimum conditions lately as well.

There has been an awful lot of illicit activity in this area and I am thinking that this may be a large part of the issue

Steelie,

I agree with the other posters -- you did the right thing -- for you -- and that is all that matters.

But do keep in mind this adage and you will keep from kicking yourself sometime in the future -- "Never pass on an animal the first day that you would shoot on the last day -- they might not be as cooperative."

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

20-30 mph winds.. is it even worth to hunt from the ground in conditions like that?

The deer are still there and still have to eat. I had three under me today. Better from the ground than a tree with these winds. I got down after hearing the third tree crash to the ground. Must be the wet soil. I Never heard a shot all morning. I guess the doe hunters stayed in bed.

If you have nothing else to do ,go. Be safe and try and play the wind. Don't educate the mature bucks. I personally stay out and choose more favorable conditions. I'll get things done now so I can hunt better days.

Took my son tonight. He came as closing to killing a deer as you can without actually firing a shot. He asked if he could shoot, but the shot wasn't quite there. Beautiful 8 point. 5 minutes later, one of my hit listers came through and he just never could get on him and he only stopped behind cover. Props to the little man for keeping his chin up and doing the right thing. My point is, the bucks moved tonight and they looked to be on the hunt. Good Luck All, the days of killing are coming fast.
