I assume since you posted in the Conventional tackle you are looking for a spinning outfit. We still need more info though, one guys "half decent" is another guys "high end". What about were you looking to spend?

Before I started fly fishing for steelhead I used this http://www.fishusa.com/St-Croix-Avid-Salmon-Steelhead-Spinning-Rods_p.html in the 9 foot, light action model. For a reel I just use a mid-grade shimano, the Sahara I believe.

If you are just starting, get that JBI combo from FishUSA, good setup for the money.

thank you all for the posts and the information. i am looking for a spinning setup   no more than 100 bucks or so.  i went last year for the first time to erie to fish the streams. i have fished the lake before for walleye but i really enjoyed fishing the creeks. as just a beginner i quickly found out its not as easy as it looks to catch them. we are planning to make a few trips this year and im hooked on it so i figured i would at least get a decent setup.

Skip the spin set-up and buy an entry level fly set-up.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

get a 9'6" pinnicle rod and a shamano sedona (750) reel...you'll have about 85$ in it and it will do you for years
