Thoughts?

We've all had those days of constant hookups---but with maybe a dozen fish on a "slow" day--how many can u really expect to bite?

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

Great topic metal; on friday morning I had 10 hookups... 8 of them were head shakers; 2 were foul hooked... 4 of them I am 99.9% sure of them smacking the fly... the other 4 were most likely flossed... now; don't think im saying that is the common ratio at all times... just my most recent observation...

Ok; so now im gonna kick back with a bowl of popcorn and watch the games begin now that I've broken the ice...

On non sodomized fish I can see a dozen hookups in the am for Kings with little/no weight. WB put on that clinic Sun. & I practice the same deal only to have the one hookup that day.
I did it on Mon. with both Kings and Ho's. They were all smacking my fav. King fly.
I still haven't found the correct fly for Ho's as a constant producer. I only had a few hookups Tues. in 2 hours fishing in a pool of Ho's.
Depends on the sky, if they're jumping or sulking, other knuckleheads around, etc..
I'm sure some experts will chime in, but maybe we just have our days and it's fishing B. I mean once we know what we're doing it's up to the fish.

Depends on how many are in front of you. Couple years back I had the good fortune of fishing a small hole that was stacked with fish all to myself. Really was all I could see was fish about three deep, just a big black mass. All I had to do was throw the line in, didn't even had to set the hook, just throw and watch the line swim upstream or down. It was 25 fish in 25 casts. Yeah some had the fly in a fin, but others had it in the mouth. Didn't matter to me, a piece of heaven I would never forget

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

I cast to many slow moveing hoes today, they wouldnt even move out of the way of my fly, many times I watched it drift right bye their head and under or over them. Someone with less patience may have lifted their rod a few times in an attempt to touch one but I enjoy the hit most of all, especially when they go out of their way to crush it. One honest pure take is better than 50 hook ups a day in my opinion. I could floss 90% of the fish I see if I wanted but flossin aint fishing, in my opinion.

If you are fishing FRESH,UNMOLESTED, MOVING (but not as 3fan is talking),finding the spots they pause while getting ready for the next push up river, I would be happy with 1 out of 10 kings actualy hitting, some days as many as 3-4 out of 10, some days 0 out of 10.
Coho in the same conditions 3 out of 10 ave, more or less on any given day.

That makes sense waderboy.... correct me if im wrong but you don't sight fish right???

So hypothetically; if a run of 2000 fish comes by me in 1 day... maybe 500 of them will be within casting distance of me... that would leave me with 50 takers in that day... which makes sense; now add the occasional foul hookups and the flossees.... this would now explain those 100 hookup days that no one ever believes

you missed an important fact - how LONG (as in seconds) do each of those 100 hookups last?

I was born at night,, but not LAST NIGHT...

I really don't give a chit either way - JUST HAVE FUN - but don't feed BS to newbies that may be reading this site...

    Depends on water conditions.
On the flow we have now all 2000 would be within casting range.
They don't run river wide but follow certain seams and pockets.
I think 2000 fish passing you by in any one day may happen once or twice a year on a good year.
More like 2000-3000 fish moving in the whole of DSR.
If you are set up in a hole in prime water you would probably have more like 100-150 fish to cast to with groups of 5-10 moving in and out through out the day.
I never wrote I didn't think you could hook that many salmon in a day having done it by actual count and feel I have done on other days as well.
Those days are the exception but there are those days.
I may have written( I don't remember doing it, but my memory isn't so sharp anymore) that numbers are for lame pinheads not fishermen.
The one day I did 54 legit hookups I was counting to show some lifters that they will strike if given the chance and was raising them to the surface so they could see the 5 inch tinsil and chenile fly in the mouth and then breaking them off.
I would still be in traction if I had fought that many and time would definately been a problem.

Where I prefer to fish now It is for moving, pausing fish.
I don't think I have more than a dozen in front of me at any time and times when I have none.
My numbers suffer but I get to fish the way I prefer to fish.

    Good luck to you.
Hope to make the next gathering.
MY BAD, I mean if invited that is.

No chip off my back drake.... keep in mind that i am referring to waderboys suggested ratio regarding "unmolested" fish...I will add that I am not a hooker upper and snapper... i'll leave it at that... one more thing though; I do fish dsr only for kings so my input is more or less bs anyways

Waderboy I mostly agree... although; the flat water below joss and above clay is pretty spanned out and ive hit quite a few runs of fish where they were spanned out from bank to bank on all sides of all islands... even on average days they are pretty spread out in that water... pockets above the wall pool; there are anywheres from 2-4 channels through that area...I am fine with the 5 to 10 hook up days.... I won't lie though I have had many of the epic run days down in the d s r... I think I will leave it at that...

Ps... of course you would be invited; I think you misunderstood me this morning... when I mentioned the deaf dumb and blind crew I was referring to the saturday morning dsr fishers... I think "the who" is going to reunite and rewrite their song "pinnball wizard" about the ddr this past saturday morning

    On 400cfs?
I too lazy to check but I think I refered to the current flow conditions.
If you are talking about 1800cfs and fish bank to bank you would have many LESS fish in good holding water within your casting, and controling your drift, range and the numbers should really get smaller not larger.

I have a 5 lb weight restriction so I am a hooker and breaker off er.

The only comments I can make to this is..
    SALMON
    1. I also only fish dsr for salmon
    2. I have said this also.. would tell clients you usually find 1 in 10 takers to a fly

any other numbers to me are just numbers..

I blind fished my butt off  this year to places that- upon inspection- had NO fishes in them - I enjoyed it
The one time I had one  mid range holder in front of me IT BIT. Took several passes but it turned and took the popsicle- nice big King male too. -landed and released.
Did NOT even try or the ones buzzing past. Maybee next trip I will but not as yet.
Point is -its whatever floats yer boat----Tlkin Kings here - not Steel and other stuff

butt, you failed to answer my previous posted question.

just for the sake of discussion, can you kindly provide a direct answer this time around - sans politicio evasive walk-around speak?

    QUESTION:
on average, how many SECONDS did those 100 EPIC Hookups last?
A straight, honest, numerical answer would be appreciated - without the cake icing.

    Sidenote:
I've watched enough guys over the years claim the same. In my backwoods, simpleton mind, I related their "hookups" to when a bat would glance off my fly line at dusk while fishing my home river... Most times it was over before you knew it happened.

For the Biggie Feesh in the SR, if your drag doesn't get warm, I don't think it counts as a hookup - just sayin..

    where's myz pitchfork???

Hey frame; next time I will bring out a stop watch with me

Since you're getting pretty serious with this one I guess I will respond... IMO; if the fish is on for 10+ seconds its considered a hook up... remember though; IMO.... also remeber; I used wafer boys ingredients to come up with my theory that you seem so intent on dissecting (as usual)...lol...

Have a had days that have produced in and around 100 hookups; YES.... not bragging just stating... should a newbie think they can accomplish this???? NO... unless they want to fish DSR for 22 years straight with some years going every weekend from end of august til end of october... yup I said it; now deal with it....
